Authors have lost their freakin' minds by only getting on Facebook, Myspace, Ning, and all the other free sites trying to promote themselves and even sometimes their books. Has anyone figured out yet that you get what you pay for? Or are we merely sheep doing it because it's popular, even though it's unproven? I'm not saying you won't sell a handful a books putting yourself out there on the social sites that end up being more work than they're worth when you get drawn into somebody's blog or spend half a day approving friend requests. I'm saying you have go out there and spend a billion dollars on advertising to merely get less than 20% commission on each book sold but you do have to spend some money. How about a radio ad? Or maybe a slick website? Maybe even some free purple panties with a pic of your book on the crotch? I've argued this point with a fellow author regarding only doing the free marketing stuff. I asked him to show me an author who sold a significant amount of books by only doing the free stuff. He couldn't. I still don't think such an author exists. And personally, I think the 50-line signatures... www.emanuel.com www.myspace.com/emanuel www.facebook.com/emanuel www.ning.com/emanuel http://emanuel.blogspot.com www.iuniverse.com/emanuel www.freewebs.com/emanuel www.no-web-traffic.com/emanuel www.amazon.com/isbn123456790 www.bn.com/isbn98654321 www.bamm.com/isbn987643 ... is nothing more than a distraction. Choose one freakin' site for your signature and go with it. And before you push the PUBLISH button, make sure you have some money in the bank for marketing. Comments? P.S. None of the links above are working sites. |

How about a radio ad? (On what station? People who listen to hiphop stations don't read books. Screw a radio ad. You'd do better getting on one of those talk shows or call in shows) Or maybe a slick website? (A little better--of course then how do they find it?) Maybe even some free purple panties with a pic of your book on the crotch? (So they take the panties and don't read the book) You got to get out there but you got to be cost effective. New authors just ain't gonna make much noise--if your publishing company ain't pushing you--the way most readers find out about books--ads in trade mags, putting your stuff out front in displays, etc The way to do it is tried and true way of going out there, doing readings, hawking it, etc. It's whats on the PAGE man! How else is it that this Urban lit is catching fire. |
