It gives me great pleasure to announce that Malaika Adero has been promoted to Vice President, Senior Editor.
Malaika was most recently the editor of the New York Times bestsellers GIRLS LIKE US by Sheila Weller and REPOSITION YOURSELF by T.D. Jakes.
During her six years at Atria, Malaika has also edited numerous Essence bestsellers including NERVOUS by Zane, CASANEGRA by Blair Underwood with Steven Barnes and Tananarive Due, and THEM by Nathan McCall. Malaika’s wide ranging skills and broad tastes have played an important part in bringing to the Atria list a variety of critically acclaimed fiction and non-fiction in categories such as history, biography, pop culture, social commentary, and erotica and street fiction. Authors who will be published by Malaika in the near future include T.D. Jakes, Kevin Powell, Phyllis Montana Leblanc, Kanye West, Prince, and Christine King Farris.
Malaika has worked in the book publishing industry for more than 20 years. She worked in an independent bookstore, at a scholarly press and then an educational book publisher before taking a position of editorial assistant at New American Library in 1985. She grew as an editor at Simon & Schuster, and then Fireside, from 1985 to 1991, returning to S&S for the launch of Atria in 2002. She was the founding executive editor for Amistad Press (from 1992 – 1996) and director of her own editorial and publishing consulting firm, Blue Media Editorial Services. She received a Tony Godwin Award in 1988 and was an editorial fellow at the Jerusalem Bookfair in 1995.
Anyone who has worked with Malaika knows she is generous with her time, a great mentor, advisor, and role model to many young staff members, and the cornerstone of Atria’s increasingly successful and high profile African American publishing program.

I was very happy to hear about this and actually heard from Malaika before the announcement. She has been a wonderful editor to me over the years as well as a friend. I wish her nothing but continued success in this industry and in life itself.
