I decided that my take of this subject can be condensed into classifying authors as being either being SELF-publishers or self-PUBLISHERS. In the first case, a publisher is employed by the writer, and in the second case, the writer is absorbed by the publisher. The first is in charge, the second is being charged. This is how you separate the writers from the printers. |

Michael, Congratulations on an excellent and true article in The Writer! I could certainly relate to the points you made, especially the part about bad weather and having your car break down. The same thing happened to me when I had my launch party in February. Hopefully, I won't have any more winter release parties in Cleveland. Some other things to consider when self-publishing includes: 1. Other self-published authors' reputations preceed you. Unfortunately, a lot their work is sub-par, including poor writing, bad-looking covers, and horrible editing. Be prepared for some rejection when telling people your book is self published because to some it means sub-standard. 2. Save money. You will need it to hire a professional graphic designer, an editor, and for marketing your book. You're competing with big publishers with big spending dollars. To everyone else: Be sure to check out Michael's article. The Writer can be found in most public libraries or at many major bookstores. |
