Black Issues Book Review (BIBR) is THE preeminent magazine dedicated to “books by and about the people of the great African diaspora”. Current BIBR Publisher Ken Smikle (left) and Founder William E. Cox Since it’s inaugural issue, in Jan/Feb 1999, BIBR realized this goal year after year, by providing an unprecedented level of coverage of our books. It is no wonder BIBR launched with an amazing pool of talented and dedicated people like Adrienne Ingrum, Susan McHenry, and many others. We talk about the devastating lost of Karibu, and seemingly every other issue in the publishing world but BIBR is like the "elephant in the room" people strain to ignore. There are no Blog posts, no open letters, no handwringing over the apparent loss of an institution – nothing. OK “lost” may be premature but I’ve heard nothing concrete from anyone regarding the magazine. I even reached out to the publisher. The BIBR web site (http://www.bibookreview.com/) was recently updated to indicate a new issue is available “Get it with your new subscription. However, I already have a subscription and I have not seen an issue, anywhere, since the Jul/Aug 2007 issue. Sept/Oct 2007, Nov/Dec 2007, Jan/Feb 2008 and Mar/Apr 2008 are MIA. The Jul/Aug 2007 issue was only 32 pages (including the cover) half the page count of the first issue. I was concerned with the page count, but glad to see the magazine in print. I’ve sold a BIBR subscription, via Amazon, as late as December 2007, but now I see the Amazon links to order BIBR are no longer working. I’ve also received quite a bit of email from people inquiring about BIBR's status; emails from subscribers, who are not griping about missing issues, but who are genuinely concerned about “our” magazine – as I am. Where is my BIBR? http://www.bibookreview.com/ http://aalbc.com/writers/black.htm

Yeah, haven't seen BIBR since Target Market News bought it. If you go to bibookreview.com (at Target Market News website), it says they are working on it and to please be patient. On the other hand, it also says you can get it at bookstores and by sub. Not sure what's up with that. http://conniebriscoe.com/connie-briscoe-presents-author-denene-millner |

Hi Connie I can confirm that several issues have been published since Target Market News (TMN) brought the magazine. TMN annouced the purchase two years ago: http://www.bibookreview.com/storiesid03080601.htm I only stopped receiving the Magazine last Summer. You know it is also surprising that I heard barely a whimer about QBR endding the publication of the Quarterly Black Book Review. QBR has not published, if memory serves, since this June 2005 annoucement: Black Literati Unite QBR The Black Book Review and Black Issues Book Review Join Forces http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/5048/5637.html QBR: The Black Book Review was around before since the mid/early 90's they published thoughful, well written reviews and articles -- which appealed to the serious reader. They even published a terrfic little book, mwhcih should be required reading, called Sacred Fire: The QBR 100 Essential Black Books http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/sacredfire.htm Is the absence of QBR and BIBR magazines not newsworthy? Enchanted, I don't know the specifics of your complaints regarding Boof v BIBR situation. But I can tell you this much; the people who did the work at BIBR have an abundance of integrity -- and patience. We don't have to like every decision BIBR made but to ascribe a lack of intergrity is ridiculous. It is not easy to publish a magazine -- especially one about books. If you think you can do a better job, please, have at it -- I'll even lend you my support. But taking away from BIBR's effort is counterproductive -- I'm suprised at you Enchanted.

Hey All, I emailed the site regarding my subscribers issue - I saw something on the newsstands - Edwidge is on the cover - actual it was their website -- after 3.5 weeks of waiting someone from Target media replied - they informed me the delay occurred because they moved offices from NYC to Chicago -or vice versa -- I am miffed, since they did not answer my question and only suggested I take out a new subscription. In the same email they mentioned to "cut overhead" they were going to a slimmer version that will be packed with Black newspapers as an insert - how many Black newspapers are left -- oh well, I am glad that aalbc.com has been a constant in my life - lo these many years - even though Thumper and Carey are in blackground lurking somewhere -- peace |

Hey Soul Sister, I do know BIBR moved out of the Empire Sate building to another location in NY, but that happened some time ago. Perhaps their offices are in Chicago now? I did not see the Edwidge cover, what issue (month/month year) was it? Speaking about inserts into Black Newspaper have y'all subscribed to: Written this will be in my next newsletter: Written is a nationally syndicated insert to African American newspapers - similar to a Parade or USA Today weekend. Our mission is to celebrate the reader and to celebrate the word. We are currently in 14 newspapers across the country with over 130,000 readers. Soul Sis there are defintely Black Newspaper available... |

Troy, I went back to the BIBR site - http://www.bibookreview.com/ and now the "featured" issue is of Sanaa Lathan and her father - these images might be old issues - however, the Edwidge is no longer up on the site. From what I read it seems that they are attempting to gain subscribers with these catchy covers - of issues I do not remember recieving. I am aware that there are Black newspapers around - however, their quality and coverage are tepid at best. I subscribe to a notable paper in the WDC area and the copyediting is horrible especially spelling errors. I have met with those who work there and understanding that income is the root important to product -- yet I subscribe and suffer through it. I was a journalism major and love the printed word -- believe me - every Black person needs to be a subscriber to at least 1 Black newspaper, 3 Black magazines. This is my passion and I suggest others join in. Oh well - talk with you - might catch you at BEA - is all about the IRS stimulus package to get me there - peace |

Soul_sister, please don't use profanity up in here. That federal agency, who shall remain nameless, bends me over every April 15th and is kicking the bejesus out of me with that AMT crap. I'm ready to have a freaking tea party -- but I digress... I did not see the Sanaa Lathan issue either. I have no reason to think that it was printed. I would reccomend that everyone subscribe to the New York Amsterdam New and the Chicago Defender. The Amsterdam news covered the National Black Writers Conference. The Article was written by Herb Boyd: http://aalbc.com/authors/herb_boyd.htm Our friendly neighborhood majority papers don't cover these types of events. I spoke with Max Rodriguez the publisher of QBR seems that he has not abandoned the idea of publishing it however his is exploring less expensive means of getting it back out there May 2008 Issue I'll see you at BEA. Mosaicbooks.com , Written magazine and AALBC.com are hosting our annual "Black Pack Party" on Saturday |

A friend of mine is a CPA and he gave me the economic stimulus disbursement schedule about a month ago. I texted him just prior to posting this to make sure the info is still up-to-date. He hit me back and "said" it still is accurate, to the best of his knowledge. Anyhowway, it's based on the last two digits of your SSN. If you're married and filed a joint return, then the IRS [cussword, cussword ] goes by the first SSN listed on the joint return. Last 2 digits of your SSN 00 - 09: July 23 10 - 19: July 30 20 - 29: August 6 30 - 39: August 13 40 - 49: August 20 50 - 59: August 27 60 - 69: Sept. 3 70 - 79: Sept. 10 80 - 89: Sept. 17 90 - 99: Sept. 24 Happy splurging!
