I was told by a member of the Church of Scientology at the age of 12 that I cannot be hypnotized. He was right. I find that when I really get rolling on writing I am under a sort of spell or a fugue state where it just comes rolling out. Of course I have to edit and rewrite, but I think we are hitting on a problem people have with writing. Most people just cannot find the time--their lives intrude, etc. The adage "You have to MAKE time" was never more true. I think if we look at our lives we find that the idea that we are perpetually busy is, like many things, mostly in our minds. Lots of time we are doing nothing. Watching them reality shows, gossiping, staring out the window. If we would take those scraps and moments to write they would all add up. Also, by making writing the thing you do to unwind--writing as relaxation or therapy or more EXCERCISE, we would do it. I find that I cannot go more than a couple of weeks without writing. I begin to get physically ill. And another mistake wemake is the idea of Writing as something formal--writing scraps. Doodles. Letters. Poems. Even composing posts here on this site are good. No charge man. This one was for the cause. |

IMO, writing is certainly a manifestation of the ego; the expression of one's self is an impulse, and taken to the extreme is an exercise inspired by the grandiose idea that people want to read what you write. Chrishayen apparently shifts into a zone, and writing to him is a compulsion. To me, it's more like a stream of consciousness. |

Technically, if you think about it, all hypnosis is ‘self’ hypnosis—even if a scatterbrained writer such as me assists you. I’m sure you all were hypnotized by my video—even Chris! But when I count to three, you will return to normal. You won’t remember any of this conversation…unless you go back and read this thread, eh hem. One… Two… THREE! Anyway, I tried some deep breathing techniques today. Before I knew it, I was nodding off to sleep. The bad part is I was in public! LOL. Chris, I get on a rolls like you described. I call it the “zone.” Kind of like Kobe Bryant in the 4th quarter. Cynique, you’ve seen it with Jordan I’m sure. Troy, The spinning wheel and some soothing audio would be nice touch! Have your people call my people, maybe we’ll do a remix. Michael T. Owens http://scatterbrainedwriters.blogspot.com/
