I will probably attend and support the brother. I don't know him personally, but I see his name all over the place. Mo also particpated in an Erotica Debate during a segment of the Off The Page radio show http://aalbc.com/off_the_page.htm Peace, Troy ------------------------ March 12, 2008 Dearest Friends, I am writing this note with the utmost humility. I am facing a possible eviction from my home and I need your help. For the past six months, I have been "chasing checks" from several non-profit arts and cultural institutions for whom I have been teaching spoken word, poetry, hip hop, and theatre classes. My landlord has been extremely patient with me as an independent teaching artist and performance professional, but he can longer wait (and neither can I). After long hard deliberation, I have had to say goodbye to several of my students, leave some of our most treasured organizations, and limit my teaching artist services to programs who are able honor their contractual agreements in a timely manner. Unfortunately, my shift did not happen soon enough and that has left me in housing court fighting to keep my apartment and my dignity. Long-time friends and supporters of my artistic work, including New York City Council Member Letitia James and Kevin Powell got wind of my predicament last week and have jumped to my aid (after fussing at me for not telling folks earlier that I am in dire straits). Councilwoman James and Brother Powell are hosting an old-fashioned “rent party” next Thursday, March 20 (see details below). Because I am not the only full time artist struggling to live out their calling while serving our communities, the evening will be a kick off for an on-going emergency fund for Brooklyn artists. It was the only way I could swallow my pride and agree to "put my business in the street" like this ;-). And BIG thanx to LV, you know who you are ;-), for opening your heart (and the doors) for me. Big thanx to my manager/publicist April Silver and LV (you know who you "is") for ignoring my pride and getting the word out. Please join me, friends, and family for an evening of dancing, food, drink, music, poetry, and fund-raising for our artists committed to enriching our lives and communities. Check out all the details below, spread the word, and join us next Thursday! Loving y'all dearly! I hear him about how artists all-too-often have to chase checks from grant-making orgs and other institutions. I've heard that lament by more than one artist here in Pgh. |

Hi Troy, I just finished reading this essay from his website and thought that it was dynamic, to say the least! I would like to donate a little something to help this man and others like him, get this very worthy and much needed message out to as many black families as possible!
