Just got this one--taken me a few days just to get through a third of it--but that is Wideman--his deep, poetic stream of consciousness Black Joycean thang makes you WORK! But it's GOOD for you. Anybody else reading it? |

Just started it . I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion. Its been awhile since Wideman has written any long form fiction I find myself enjoying it very much. Except I don't think the Joycean angle is entirely appropriate in describing his work. |

I don't think the Joycean angle is entirely appropriate in describing his work. (Why not? He earlier admitted himself that Joyce was one of his big influences--read, especially his first novel His work tends to be autobiographical like Joyces, also very naturalistic and scatalogical) |

I guess I will have to read some more James Joyce. I see where Joyce is an influence but he also cites Faulkner & others. When I think of Joyce I think of Finnegans Wake & Willam Mevin Kelley's riff Dunsfords Travels Everywheres. Thanks for setting me straight. |

Well, I'm certainly more motivated to read this book than - "Succulent Chocolate Flava 2". |

Well, I'm certainly more motivated to read this book than - "Succulent Chocolate Flava 2". (I know, Cynique. Like me you read for escape. Reading about twosomes, threesomes, foursomes, orgies, mad scandalous oral sex, creeping, cheating, getting your freak on--that realistic, everday slice of life stuff don't do it for you. Ahh, everybody can't be a supersex machine like us--too bad.

Sorry. I prefer my passion in the flesh, not verbalized in book form, or embodied in street walking crack heads trolling the sidewalks of St. Louis. |

Anybody who has to explain their "jokes", hasn't told one. Now stop pouting because you couldn't snare a hooker, and go back to giving yourself a hand job. |
