Here are the winners from the Award Show last night. Unfortunatley they are not announced during "air time" but who knows, if a Black Man may become President during our lifetime, we may also live to see Black Writers getting love on Prime Time Television as well

Thanks for sharing this list. I had not heard much about the awards this year.
The Image Award nominees are a fine set of books. Probably the best list ever. The winners still skew to the most famous authors -- but that is cool too.
By the way, you have a very nice Blog!

I watched part of it. I was there about 7 or 8 years ago (nominated for A Long Way From Home), the year Halle Barry won for the Dorothy Dandridge movie, and it was great then but it has really gotten a lot more polished over the years. |

I watched most of this show and found it distracting the way everything was so rushed in order to get it all in. Speeches were cut off, with some people from a group of winners not even allowed to speak at all. Winners in some categories were just announced and not introduced. Guess they wanted to make sure they had enough time to get Ugly Betty in for her award as best actress in a comedy{?}
Aretha Franklin, who received a special award, is like a force of nature. She has such pondersous breasts that they impeded her movement. She had to be helped up from her seat and led to the stage.
Dear Ruby Dee was also honored. At 83, she understably seems fragile and a bit forlorn and frequently gets lost in a maze of stammering. I wonder why she is never accompanied by any of her 5 children. She is so beautifully well-preserved and has such a great body of work, I'm glad she is getting her props after all these years.
Stevie Wonder, another honoree, hasn't lost a beat. |

Aretha is a big woman it even impacts her signing voice I'm sure she would not be so nig if she could help it...
I've seen Ruby Dee at a number of events. She is frequently honored in this neck of the woods. She really is very talented so was her late husband. it was wonderful to see them perform together.
I did not care for the shot of Ruby on this month's Essence. The photo did ot look anything like Ruby. I don't really see the point of putting these photos up of people that are completely fake. Seems to me the average woman would just look at a cover of essnce magazine and get sick thinking why they don't look like that. If it is any solace; the people on the covers don't look like that either...
Stevie Wonder is The Man. I often wonder (pardon the pun) why he has not had any hits lately. He really got down with his timeless music when I saw him last year. It would be nice if he rather than these little kids running around now had more impact on our popular music...

Ruby did look a little lost at times but still as beautiful as ever.
Troy, thanks about the blog. I just wish I could keep up with it! I am going to try and get better with that.
As for the winners being skewed.. well, the nominees are usually done by a nationwide survey. The same ones who vote on movies and television are the same ones who vote on books. Alot of folks go with who they have heard of... That being said, the majors and the familiars usually top the list. Even looking at Debut Author Category you have at least 2 "stars" in there with Victoria Rowell and Robin Givens.
Oh well, I try to make it up with the Author Pavilion. But still a little guilty there too, last year we had "Star Power" Eddie Levert, Victoria, Cece, Etan Thomas.... but then again we also had a great platform for Self Published. In fact the Pavilion Best Seller was a Self Published Author. He outsold even the Stars! But for now the Award Show is what it is, hopefully someday we'll at least see the author listings as part of the programming.
Aretha gave a great speech, very heartfelt. I just cringe with the live thing, especially when you have Kim Burell and Stevie singing and Julian Bond looking over at them like "if you dont mind we'd like to close the show". Since poor Stevie could not see any of the cues..... Overall though I think it was a great show, very classy and something to be proud of.
Connie, it would have been nice to see a Photography category. Both yourself and Rachel Vassel had beautiful books accompanied by very touching essays. |

Mocha, that's why Michael and I were so honored to see the photography category represented by the Essence Literary Awards. Hopefully others will follow suit.
