Back in the old days when I first started AALBC.com. If I needed a photo of an author I just looked around on the internet, found one and used it. I was ignorant, the WWW was young and no one ever complained. Fast forward a few years and I've seen all forms of my own web content (photos, articles) used every which way without crediting the AALBC.com as the source. Once I wrote a 20 page document and put it on the web. I later attended a conference where my 20 page document was distributed with someone else's name and photo attached. This pissed me off cause the person stole from me and was benefiting for something I did. I once can across a web site that had AALBC.com framed in. Basically you’d go to their site and my content would come up. I complained to the webmaster. They said, "what are you complaining about you are still getting the traffic." I did not appreciate the tone, but they did have a point. When a person clicked a link they were sent to AALBC.com. I often come across a blogs that repurpose my content http://blacknewssite.com/black_writers.php. In fact, I encourage this type of use as long as I’m credited as the source and there is a link back to my site. Similarly, Youtube has been a Godsend. I can publish my video there and more people will see them there than if I hosted them on AALBC.com alone. Plus I get the promotion that goes along with the videos more widely viewed. The web is a place where you actually want to people to use your content AND (and that is a big ad What does all of this have to do with needing a photo of Octavia Bulter, you ask? Well as it turns out I met a photographer recently who pointed out that a photo I have of Octavia Butler (http://aalbc.com/authors/octavia.htm) was a shot that she took and she did not give permission for it to be used (how embarrassing!) I lifted that photo from some other web site so long ago I can even remember where. I know plenty of places have subsequently lifted it from me. I can tell because the cropping of the photo and the drop shadow is my doing. I plan to remove the photo as soon as I get a chance. But I would like to replace it with a photo that I have permission to use. I would of course give you credit on the web site and provide a link to your web site from the Octavia Butler page. The photographer offered to license the photo to me. But the problem is that I pay for the photo and everyone else uses it for free. If I needed a hi resolution photo for one time use in a magazine, I could see shelling out the money, but a low res-image I can’t see paying a lot of money for that. I actually have a photo of Octavia somewhere (taken before the advent of digital photography), but Lord knows where it is now. If fact if anyone wants to provide photos of any author to AALBC.com for credit and a link – let know. I don’t need the actual photo – just the file or a URL where I can just copy it - just like the old days (smile)

Do you want a link to another site, the email address of the owners of the site or do you want a photo that we might have? |

Troy- I have a photo of Octavia. It is a head shot that was part of her press kit she gave me when she visited the place where I work. I also have a photo of her with a group of students, which is mine. It's a jpeg you could probably crop. Happy to offer you either one. |
