Hi All, I've secured a corporate sponsor for my future relationship novel booksignings. In return for mentioning my sponsor's biz within the story and promoting the sponsor at signings, the company will giveaway gift certificates at my signings and for contest prizes. The company's products are a perfect tie in with the novel. Now that I'm attempting to get published traditionally, I wonder if a publishing company would be enthused or disappointed in this idea. Any thoughts? |

Enthused. Man I would not be surprised if editors start making changes to manuscripts for the same reason... what else is next? How about ad pages in the middle of novels. Who is the sponsor?

I think this is a very ingenuous way of prostituting your work. And I am now trying to figure out what product I can tie into a manuscript I have. Hummm. One of my characters in partial to Jack Daniels. Thinking.... |

A certain author mentioned a Gucci keyring in her novel. She sent the book to Gucci headquarters with the page marked, and Gucci sent her a free Gucci keyring and a thank you note. Mentioning certain products in novels is a great marketing tie-in. If you can get in touch with the decision-makers at headquarters, while you may not always receive sponsorship, you could cop some nice freebies. |

Troy, There are already e-book publishers who place ads in the middle of their books. They offer readers free e-books and cover costs through advertising. My sponsor is www.inthemoodintimates.com, a women's apparel store, specializing in sexy undergarments. Basically, they're an online version of Victoria's Secret. They provided $50.00 gift certificates at all of my signings in exchange for publicity. They were actually able to convert a few of those gift certificate winners into future paying customers. I was able to sell books to those interested in winning the free gift certificates. We have a great working relationship, which is why a character in my book speaks the company's name. Since I'm pursuing traditional publishing, I wonder if a publisher will cut it from my manuscript if it gets picked up. |

Honestly I don't have a problem with "sponsorship" as you have described it as long as it does not come across as blatant commerical. I would, however, not be thrilled with ad pages in novels they way are found (or used to be found) in comic books. But if the alternative were no books at all -- then bring on the ads |

Emanuel I don't think he publsher will be concerned about your outside deal with the apparrel shop for just mentioning their product. Many, many books mention designer brands in books without reperussion from the editing department. Now if they wanted to place an ad in one of your books that is published traditionally, that might present a problem since once you sign with a major publisher your books effectively become their property for the length of the contract or until your book goes out of print if that's what your agent negotiates. So then I think it would become an issue of the house's policy on running ads in their books. |

Nah. I wouldn't dare try to run an ad in the book. |

It has been done with traditional publishers but all have different policies. It would come down to the publisher and the ad.I have had many sponsors at my booksignings, including MAC Cosmetics. It was not an issue. Zane |
