Okay, anyone picked up Fidel Castro's A spoken Autobiography? The book seems quite interesting to me, given it is Castro's wview of his life, his views, Cuba, the revolution, etc. I've always wanted to get Castro's version of....Because any US articles, published books, and news reports have an obvious bias....In any case, I just wanted to know if anyone on the boards was interested in reading the book or have any thoughts about the book... BTW: Long time lurker... |

Well, if the book is as long-winded as Castro is, it's not something I'd be enthusiastic about. While at one time he was admired by Americans, viewed as a romanticized revolutionary who liberated his people, he turned into the type of egomaniacal leader he was rebelling against. Who could really give the low-down would be an average Cuban citizen who has lived under Castro's rule. But, of course, such a person could never tell the truth because his life would be in danger if he didn't praise Castro. So that's kind of a clue. As I recall, when JFK was assassinated, Castro wanted to come to his funeral to join all of the other world leaders in mourning the American president, but he was rebuffed because he had fallen out of favor. IMO he never got over this in rejection. Report back to us your impression of the book if you read or listen to it. |

So far the book is very interesting. Actually, it is a *spoken biography*. It reads lke an interview. I understand the negative press/propaganda that we get on Castro. But I know there is a part of him that is for helping the Poor black folks; Which is why all the Cubans that we find that hate him are on the lighter side. And were fairly rich in the pre-Castro days. In any case, I know the bad stuff, and I think it's interesting to hear his side; Delusional, as it may be. For exmaple, as he is explaining the communists in the Batista government, while he was young, he mentioned WWII. He says, in passing,...'Two atomic bombs were used over defenceless Japanese civilian cities as a way of terrorizing the world'. We do know that is delusional. Yes, they were civilians, and we would never do (or be allowed) to do such a thing today. BUT, he failed to mention the Pearl Harbor incident that initiated the attack. Never-the-less the book is an interesting look into his ideals... |
