Who here is reading the new translation? I just started reading it, and I find the language so awkward I can't believe this thing is regarded as a supreme literary masterpiece. |

I might take a look--as I said, works lose something in translation and, not knowing Russian, I wouldn't know what. I have tried to read other translations--have generally shrank from investing a good part of my life in a book. There was this black writer from Chicago who died a few years ago--Leon Forrest?--he liked to write long uns too. |

I've heard this is the best translation to date and I'll probably give it a try. I'm reading Anna Karenina again right now [an older translation] which is one of my favorite books. It's been years since I last read it and I'd forgotten how much he packs in there. |
