Enlighten me, Emanuel. Just what info does an ISB number convey? I always regarded them as window dressing that gave your book a professional look, so I elected to use the same one for all 3 of my self published books.  |

I'm not Emanuel  but an ISBN indicates the publisher of record, the book's format and trim size, publication date, author, page count, publication country, etc. An ISBN is a book's "fingerprint." The number never expires, and you're supossed to use one per book; per format. For instance, if a book is pubbed in both hardcover and paperback, two separate ISBNs should be assigned; one for the pbk, the other for the hc. |

Exactly. If you're selling books outside of bookstores, retail stores, or libraries (mostly doing direct selling, either in person or direct mail), you don't need one. I imagine one ISBN # for three books on Amazon might make the site explode. |

I had an idea that was what a ISBN entailed so since my books were all the same except for the page-count which was never above 200 for any of them, I just used the same number and these "clones" all have the same "fingerprint".  Inasmuch as I never anticipated the wide-spread distribution of their short-run, I didn't sweat it.  Nothing like being serious about your work, huh?
Guess I'll stay out of this discussion and consider making a new year's resolution to be less negative but - the more I hear and see, the more I can't help but view the publishing world as a parallel universe where only a few stars twinkle and hopes and dreams are stifled by an atmosphere that dissipates them. |

Cynique,
I guess it's all about what your personal goal is for your books. Many self publishers are in it for the money, and you could at the very least get a return on your investment selling 200 books if you keep your initial costs down by simply treating your book as a product that must be purchased. Authors with loftier goals should probably study craft more than anything, but they should also save money so that when their books are released they can advertise to reach a wider audience. Even if you only publish to share books with friends and family, you can accomplish that goal as well, and can probably do it for free through LuLu.com or something. |

Just giving you an update, I sold out of ISBN numbers. I guess I'm officially no longer a self publisher. This will help to encourage me to submit more.
If all fails in a couple of years, I'll buy another set of ten. |
