I know the chances are it could happen but if I was the author of one of these books, I be pissed with IUniverse. Are they running out of cover art over there or what? |

Isn't Pierre Bateau "Batmocop"? Y'all better treat him real nice, my man might get PAID for iUniverse's screw up. It's not uncommon for different publishers to use the same cover art, with some variations, as seen above. This happens quite often in the Romance genre and in nonfiction, because they use lots of art in the public domain to design those types of covers. But for the same publisher, even a PoD company, to recycle the same cover art - that's a no-no in my book. And don't these PoD companies promise "an original cover design"? With all the money they charge for their packages, you'd think, at the very least, they wouldn't reuse cover art. I hope the authors of both books sue the livin shit outta iUniverse.

Here's what the IUniverse website reads: Custom Book Covers All books published via the iUniverse standard publishing packages receive custom-designed covers, produced in full color. Unlike most self-publishing companies, iUniverse does not use basic template designs for books that will be distributed in the channel. Nor do we charge extra for custom-designed covers—this service is included in our Premier Pro, Premier and Select packages. When you publish a book with iUniverse, our design team will work with you—incorporating your photos, graphics, sketches, and ideas—to create a unique book cover that exceeds your expectations and beautifully represents your book's contents. There's nothing there about exclusive rights but maybe the authors' individual contracts have more info. If not, the authors probably can't sue. Still there's reason enough to be livid. It makes you wonder how many other covers they're recycling. I've read positive reviews on both books so hopefully the cover blunder won't confuse the authors' readers. I think if authors are going to go the subsidy or POD route (been there myself and never going back) they should submit their own cover art or at least submit their ideas for how the cover should look.

Don't these printers have a catalog of cover samples from which authors can choose? I'm sure the authors have some control over how their covers will look. Maybe these 2 just happened to have chosen the same image. But still, - this is not cool. It's like going to a dance and seeing someone else wearing the same dress as you. |

I have two books through iUniverse and the author has a great deal of input on design depending on the package selected. Some options don't give a lot of options on the cover, but you can submit a cover design yourself it you desire. I had both covers revised from the initial examples that were sent back for review. The author signs off on every aspect of the book before it goes to final production. My cover and title are two things I spend a lot of time studying. The title, so it is as short and unique as possible. The cover so that something stands out, especially if internet marketing plays a big role. www.DTPollard.com |
