Troy, I read two of the finalists in the nonfiction category, "Brother, I'm Dying" by Edwidge Danticat and "Ralph Ellison: A Biography" by Arnold Rampersad. In addition, the chair of the nonfiction voting panel was David Shields, author of "Black Planet: Facing Race During an N.B.A. Season," and the judges included NYU law professor Annette Gordon-Reed, author of "Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings: An American Controversy." I liked the Danticat memoir although it's a very heartbreaking story. One of the most astute reviews of the Rampersad book is this one by Mark Greif in the London Review of Books. He's an American in his early 30s who's also read the Lawrence Jackson book. http://www.lrb.co.uk/v29/n21/grei01_.html The Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards were also announced a few weeks ago. I've read three. I suspect Emanuel's read more. |
