Good article, Emanuel, fine-tuning the discussion we've previously had on this subject. The self-publishing boom has, indeed, spawned a cottage industry that caters to the needs of fledgling writers. And from the looks of things, these enterpising upstarts will continue to have plenty of business as the writing bug gives rise to an epidemic of people eager to have their stories transformed into books that - won't be best sellers. The good news is that other enterprising black folks are starting up their own publishing houses. |

Thanks Cynique. Exactly...enterprising upstarts describes it well. I'm gonna stop taking up space here regarding my blog posts on BIB. For anyone who is interested, I will be posting there on the 8th of every month. I'm enjoying blogging there because blogging only once a month doesn't take my time away from book writing and book review writing. I also like reading the columns of other bloggers. |

Emanuel, your first post is interesting as you encourage people to post comments to your blog on your blog. In the same amount of time your referenced the BIB post you could have simply copy and pasted your Blog post here. It would have been in two places and more people would have read it. I do it myself that is post information on my Blog that I also post here. ---- Many people are getting paid as a result of self publishing. Indeed self publishing is driving new form of revenue for major publishers. Teri Woods' latest book debuted on the NY Times Bestsellers list and was a bestselling book on AALBC.com before it was even published. Teri Woods success would have been impossible without self published authors leading the way. Many businesses benefit from the printers, distributors, retailers, editors, book cover designers and of course the authors. Of course all of the entties above are not profitable, but there is no enterprise were all participants are profitable. Net-net we are all better off as a result of self publishing. Troy The discussion boards, in many ways are a Blog too |

Hey Troy, I did that because I didn't want to disrespect the owners of BIB (I'm just a columnist there not the owner.) by double posting and not driving traffic to their site AND to respect this site by not loading it with so much of my information. Another reason is to just have one central discussion location as to not have to go back and forth tracking comments and replying (even though I end up doing that anyway). BTW, you'll find that I've shouted out AALBC on BIB quite often as a place to advertise in the comments section of other bloggers' posts. I didn't mean for that article to sound like I was anti non-traditional publishing, especially since all my books have been published that way. I only meant to show those who have the idea of getting rich through non-traditional publishing where the money goes. Oftentimes everyone but the author gets rich from the endeavor, especially in subsidy publishing. Of course there are folks like Terri Woods, Relentless Aaron, and Zane who have made it big by their self-publishing origins but for the most part they are exceptions not the rule. Considering Bowker reports one of four books are now self-published, we know that every one can't be doing as well in this industry. |
