I spoke with Karen Hunter (for the first time) today. I have to say that I was overwhelmingly impressed by this sister. She is a force. Among other things, Karen expressed frustration that her new imprint is already been labeled as an urban imprint. She expressed that this is not the case – and I’m convinced that it will not be. Where I was originally cynical, I’m now actually excited about her plans. Karen, did call me on the fact that I did not reach out to her the way I reached out to Terry McMillan in response to Terry's scathing letter (http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/1/30333.html). In retrospect I probably should have contacted Karen. While I saw the cc list for Terry’s email and could have emailed Karen, I did not feel comfortable doing so. In fact, had I not met Terry the night before, the letter was forwarded to me, I probably would not have reached out to Terry either. Needless to say you’ll be reading much more about Karen and her imprint on AALBC.com. Peace

Hey Troy, When I first came to this site two weeks ago, I was just looking to get my feet wet reading, and responding to posts, to look around, and maybe meet some people, etc. You know, keep my eyes open, my ears open, and my mouth shut kinda thing. But after reading that thread, I was blown away by the strong emotions that are tied up in this urban imprint stuff. It made me realize just how much stuff I don't know and that I need to learn about. This was an incredible eye opener for me. Thanks for sharing that. Regards, Henry |

I hear you Henry. The baords are a resource I use virtually daily. I don't get to read everything or participate as much as I like. The the urban book issue was raised here long before it was an issue in the popular media, certainly way before Terry's scathing email... Here, the topic is almost passe, but it will continue to be an issue; in much the same way people have been complaining about gangsta rap for the last 1/4 century... and the beat goes on.
