I'm seeking opinions and professional expertise for an article. Can you please share your opinions of the strategy of trying to get a book deal by first self-publishing, selling 5000 or so books, and then seeking a traditional deal? I know there are many success stories about this strategy in the news. However, we rarely hear about the folks who don't sell many self-published books and what their next steps are. Is this strategy smarter than seeking a literary agent or tradional publisher from the start and settling for nothing less? Is it more difficult for someone who may have self-published, say, ten books and sold less than a thousand of each to get a traditional deal? Please post your opinions here but also shoot me an e-mail at emanuelcarpenter@yahoo.com and include your real name if it's okay to quote you for the article. Thanks, Emanuel Carpenter |
