TANANARIVE DUE SHOWS THE LOVE IN ST. LOUIS Old heads among serious music fans will often discourage new jacks from trying to meet their heroes and sheroes in person. “Just judge them by what they laid in the grooves,” they caution—meaning that artists should be judged on their works and not on their personal interactions with their public since for a variety of reasons public relations might not be their strongest suit. This is not true Of Tananarive Due Yesterday at the Scott Joplin house in St. Louis her warmth, openness, honesty and humanity almost swamped intelligence skill and experience as she rapped and communed with the spirits of Ancestor Scott Joplin, his wives, friends and neighbors. It was less like a reading or a lecture than a visit with an old friend who was telling you what she has been up to. The girl can’t help it, she was raised that way. She talked about her family, parents, upbringing, and marriage almost as much as she did about the writing business, the book tour circuit, the Hollywood script grind, and what writers call The Process. For her fans--the local branch by the way showed up strong with stacks of her books under their arms and bought bookoos more she has this: The movie version of “My Soul to Keep” with Blair Underwood is still in development, she and husband Steve Barnes are making the rounds of Hollywood parties, and she is going to start teaching an MFA program in January. The Sista is busy, (But not to busy to meet with a local literature group, The African American Bibliophiles club) so act now. Hello Chris Every time I peek in you are busy trying to make this board an interesting place to visit. Hey, you're doing a good job. Hello all, gotta go. Hi A-Women. Damn I always feel bad when I yell at one and not all the other friends I've meet on the board but hey you know who you are. Flash from the past: Damn, I just got around to reading BERNICE Mcfadden's The WARMEST December and man what a ahhh ahhhh depressing ride. Well written and I liked the point of view but that Hy-Lo was a M'r F'r! Carey Carey |

Finally, I'm ready to start "Casanegra", Ms. Due's collaboration with Blair Underwood! I keep getting side-tracked, and this time around, I couldn't pass up a chance to read "Red Bone" the true crime story about the murder of a black millionaire set against the backdrop of Atlanta. It was such an engrossing and interesting book. Yvette, you recommended "Red Bone", so thanks because I loved it. Hey, Carey! Don't make yourself so scarce. |

Hey, you're doing a good job (Thanks Carey, but I must admit I could not do it without the participation of the other posters. I won't mention any names because you know they probably would want me to lay some BREAD on them, but you know who they are. Keep coming around) |

A-womon I was going to ask what explosion but what would be the point!? Anyway, HELLO....I was begining to think you didn't love me anymore when you didn't hit the board. Hey, am not making any promises but I think I may be seeing a little light so I might be joining in a little more. Life can throw a block in the road as I well know so lets just say I hope to be back. BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD I AM STILL HERE. I really mean that! Ouuu Weee, it's been one. But baby....I AM STILL HERE! Thank you so much for helping me realize that I am a part of something. Thanks for missing me and telling me so. I miss our little *cough* late night talks *smile*. You too are obviously a survivor . I remember all the little thngs you had to go through just to be a part of this thangs, not to mentions your own struggles away from this board. You're my pretty hero *smile*. If I was your girlfriend would you tell me everything (Prince *lol*)? I just thought of something, are you in Columbus? Damn I had a partner that was living there and they had asked me to visit on several occassions. I can think of nothing easier than to sit down and talk about a lot of nothing wwith a friend. When a person falls down as far as I did it puts the world in a different place. Simple little joys become lovely moments. As you know I've had the white picket fence and all that goes along with it. Sooo..... what's next.......that's my path, that's my new journey.......what's next? Bye love...be sweet...be you! I Womon, you know what I've missed the most....someone to love. Really, to know me is to know my memories and I really miss THAT! I wonder if that's an elusive thang for many? To love and to be loved. CYN-CYN.......Ya right *lol*. Carey Carey |

Sese made note of the number of posts I had a couple of weeks back, Carey, and her post turned into a long thread of people "congratulating" me. Chrishayden, however, was aghast; He couldn't believe that people would pat me on the back for being the way I am. LMAO. |

What about HMO...or is it HMOA....or HJMO....you know who am talking about *l8l*. Of course I have to ask about Sisgal????? Am serious CYN-CYN, ol boy should be hitting you with one of those William's books he can't seem to sell *smile*. He must have thousands of those babies *smirk*. Hey, what's up with my guy. What's Thump on these days?? SHAKIN' IT OVER HERE BOSS........ Oh shit, I was having a flashback. They could never take my sense of humor!!! Thank God! Hey, I noticed I was a silver member. How come I can't be a Black member or even Brown member. I think I'll even take Darkmember *smile*. I think I[ll hit Troy with that one. But damn...Platinum Poster...that Cyn-Cyn has really set the bar. Think about this...we did'nt even start this register thang until 2004. Some of us have been doing this years before they started counting. Yeah, come to think of it, am going to apply for retroactive pay. Yeah, I want eveything coming to me. Yeah, I want to be as double bubble triple gold platinum black member *lol*. Where do I send in my request. For real, don't we get some kind of mileage rewards. Even that company....that company that "gives you money back" after you spend 4 million, takes care of theirs. Isn't that a bunch of s**t, gives you your "own" money back. That's a nice hustle....you give me some money and then I give you "some" back. Gotta go, love talkin' to y'all. |

JMHO and SisGal still post from time to time and Yukio comes and goes, Carey. And yes, Sese is a lovely person who now seemingly prefers to lurk rather than post that much. Thumper doesn't post that much anymore either because he's busy pursuing an advanced degree, I guess. Check out the picture of Thumper with Troy and Linda and a group of others on the "Terry McMillan" thread. And it should be noted that quite a few of my 10,000+ posts are just one sentence, sometimes just one word. |

Let me wipe these tears from my eyes.....you are all to much! Sisgal.....Sisgal! I was about to come down there and find you in one of those big building on one of those peachtree streets *smile*. What's up with that city with all those streets with the same name. And damn, are the streets always tore up? The city was built for horse and buggy from the jump and then they want to *repair* them. I was in Hampton and made the mistake of trying to drive to Buckhead...youu know what that was like. Then I was going to be slick and take a shortcut that ended up being a loooong cut. Anyway, you know I can't wait to talk with you. Do you still have that address? How about that number in ATL? Linda be careful what you ask for....tell her Diane....I do travel....well...I'vbe been a little restricted as of lately but look out am about to be a BAD MAN. JayMO...HMO....ahhh...thanks for the holla . I miss SESE....she's so coool...so laid back. I wonder if she can sing *lol*. I can just picture her cooking a nice meal while she walked around the house singing a little song or two. I can also picture CYN-CYN sitting at her PC with a Winston in her hand. As the picture widens I can see a hangin doll of Chris Hayden with it's eyes poked out and pins running through it *LOL*. Wait....I see a lady...a nice looking women, she's crying. Again the picture widens and there's a picture of a man on the wall. I think I recognize the picture but it's blurred.....oh man it's.......... Carey Carey

Winstons! They're too strong, Carey. When I occasionally smoke, I prefer Capri Menthol. They're like smoking air, and each one of em is about a foot long, and takes at least 15 minutes to finish. So you can get by with smoking 3 a day, - one after each meal. LOL And, pray tell, who is this nice looking lady, crying??? Anybody we know???? |

A-womon, only you would have the ahhhh.....ahhhh...you know, to even suggest such a thing. BUUUT, let me tell you a little story, y'all know I love to tell stories. Anyway, some of you know that we do kind of get together away from the board. I ain't the kiss and tell type but again sometimes the relationships on the board are tightened up a bit when you know what the person looks like. It ain't about no funny business, it's about building on a friendship. Lord knows there's a bunch of fools out here and I kind of doubt if this is a spot were those dudes try to pick up those little girls and end up on Nightline or whatever that show is. Over the years that I've been visiting this spot I have built friendships. I've talked with Thump on the phone on occasions. I've talked with Troy also. Now don't get me wrong, my girl would look at me with this *nigga why these women e-mailing you* look*smile*. It was always about books or something on the board.....well......mostly....ahhhh usually. anyway......what was I trying to say.....damn, I done got lost in my own thought. That's usually a sign that someone is trying to pick their words very carefully . Yeah....okay...I know what Sisgal looks like and she's an attractive women. I dare not mention anymore because y'all know how you can be......flippin' s**t around and gettin' people in trouble. A-Womon.....help me out here.....don't I know what you look like.....notice how I did that *smile*. But A-Womon, why did you even mention Sisgal....that's strange. What if her guy read that....men are funny about that....you gonna get somebody in trouble on nothin' *LOL*. CYN-CYN, I just thought you were ol'school and winstons just popped in my head. But you are definitely a slims girl. This is a great time for me to say I know what you look like too. Now....that cleans up EVERYTHANG *smile*. Carey Carey |

Okay.....for the official record, I've never ever...ever...never...met face to face with anyone from this board. I am sure many of you have hooked up with someone and thought you knew them but in reality the time that you actually had spent with them was really limited. The conversations were probably limited. The first attraction to someone is generally physical. However, here on the board we get to "listen" to the person. As you know the topics vary and we get to feel the person. Right will always come to the top and if a person is wacked or on some bullshit it won't be long before "that" comes out. Love and friendships are built on common interest and respect for the other person and their views. Those that I exchange words with on the board are people that I've come to respect for various reasons. It could have been based on how they handled adversity or thier view on a topic that matched mine. I don't mean to suggest that our view was correct....oh no....only that we shared a common ....somethang. Sooooo, if I suggest that I would love to sit down and have coffee with someone......I am saying ....hey, you are alright...would you like to share a moment in time. Isn't that what life is all about....doing what you do with friends. Hey, y'all some interesting M'er F'ers! If that were not so then what would be the purpose. S**t, Y'all some talented individuals....your words tell me that. There's a saying or quote that says "to know me is to know my memories" . Nothing would please me more than to sit down with each of you that I exchange thoughts with and share thoses thoughts and memories. Memories make us cry, laugh and sometimes say what if. Sooooo, thanks to all of you that consider me a friend. This board has allowed me to "escape". See, everytime I sit down to say a little something I feel like I've left out so much.....know what I mean? CYN-CYN, you tell us.....who's in the picture? Heck, for that matter, anyone can take a shot at it...who's in the picture. Be couragous, be.....ahhhh ...adventerous....be...you know. Try it....what do you have to lose, it could be cleansing.

Well, Carey, my old car conked out, so I just let a fast-talking used-car salesman talk me into buying a 2003 Alegra. And it's red. I never had a red car in my life! You are single and come from a single parent home. No. Married, with two kids; raised by my biological mother and father. You love to read and a good movie is as appealing to you as a night out shaking your Yes and yes to the book and movie. But even though 40-something is the new 20-something, I am not really into the club scene these days. Re: your other guesses--I believe clothes should fit and be comfortable, so I am not keen on "squeezing" into anything--regadless of how I am feeling. Actually I tend to take fit and comfort to be a guiding rule in my personal interactions and public persona as well (including here on aalbc/TC). Which is one reason why my "board name" is nothing other than my name. You'd have to take it up with my mother and father about any deeper meanings. LOL |

Hey, don't be surprised by the voicemail intro. My son said my intro was to serious so I tried to relax and do something a ......ahhh...a little different. As you might see/hear I didn't quite get it done. I am not one of them that carrys their phone with them like it's a part of my body. I don't take it to the shower with me and I don't carry it room to room. AND, I play my music in my car sortta loud so if you don't get me I WILL call you back. Love ya Carey Carey |

Ooooooo Vet, you are scarry *smile*. Thanks for the response. Hey, what are you doing on your PC in the middle of the day. Don't you have some kids to run around or that husband to feed? Ohhhhh, you are studying....right. Don't mind me I am just having fun. I lost my joy and I am trying very hard to find it. Our church is having a 3 day revival and it's been great. The guest speaker is from Chicago and I don't know if you know anything about Chicago but they are not only famous for those lousy Cubs and the blues, they have some excellent speakers. If I had time or better typing skills I would love to talk some more on the subject. Again the subject was "revival", to bring back......to start again...ouuuu weeeee could you see how someone could work with that? From your background and your words I can tell that you have a "belief", you've been blessed. Hey, I have to go, some fool just called me and asked me for a ride. You know how they call up and say "hey, what are you doing, I got gas money and I need a ride". Why do people that don't have a car think that we have a car just to give them a ride whenever they call. Besides, that "I got gas money" thing is never what it should be. There seems to always be something attached to that. I should have said, "if you have gas money then call a taxi". But hey, I remember when......... |

Okaay........don't have me call out names but what are you waiting for? OOOOHHHH, you scared that I am not talking to YOU. Fear is a funny thang, it's ususal based on something that has nothing to do with the reaal issue. Look, women visit this site more than men....so I've befriended you! Okaay.. here I go.....A-Womon, me and you had many late night talks... I treasure those moments....you can call and simple say "hello Carey,..... welcome back". And I'd like to know how YOU are doing. Okaay Crystal.....what's up....you can't call...you can't make me laugh again. If I remember correctly you don't even have to use your dime *lol*..oppps.......GO TROJANS DIANE DIANE, your last post implied that I had your number, I DO NOT, if I did I would have called. I was trying to be....ahhh QT-ish I was asking if you had the address of the place that you sent the book? I reread my post and it did appear that I knew your address...implying that I'd visited.....NOT. Anyway, If YOU do not call......well...I very much would love to continue our conversations and friendship.Hey,I get nervous even thinking about receiving a call from y'all because I don't know what to say, I don't know if I would break down and cry or reach out and simply give you a distant hug and a thank you. As I mentioned, fear is a funny thang, I would love to say to anyone that would like to say "hello Carey this_________how are you doing" should call. BUT if I said that and no one called I would.......I would......you know. Like Linda, I feel like I know her but I've never spoken to her, she seems like a sweet person. I've read her book but..... Gotta go Carey Carey |

WHAT A DAY!!!! Obviously some days are better than others but today has been a great day. But wait.....someone called me and they failed to remember that THEY were calling from a department line and I......I.....did not know that extention. GO BRUINS *LOL* (inside joke) NOW....and A-Womon don't you dare run with this *smile*, after all that crying I received another nice call. I hope she doesn't mind me sharing and if she does what is she going to do, beat me up *lol*. I have to admit that I was very nervous because this women is such a lady and I didn't want to say the wrong thangs. We've been conversing for over ....maybe about 10 years but yet I still get nervous because.......well....I must admit that I was at first attracted by her writing skills and intellect but after we exchanged photos I was attracted by her beauty as well. Now hold up....that didn't or doesn't mean that I wanted anything because we both were married and neither one of us was on that. But nevertheless I always felt a little guilty. As we continued our friendship we found ourselves in a little trouble . She was just starting to write her book and she allowed me to take a peak at it and give a little feedback. Well, Ann, my wife at the time questioned me as to who is this lady was that was writing me. I think she got the same response or questions from her guy. Now mind you, I wasn't on anything but I always felt a little guily because as I mentioned I was attracted to her. As I think about it I am not really sure if she even knew what I looked like but we continued. Lets skip forward a few years. When I had a little breathing room from my little thang I found myself in her city. I wanted to talk with her and we did talk on the phone but again I didn't want to feel like I was.......on something other than ......you know....."how has it been"......."lets catch up on the past few years". That dang A-WOMON *lol* must of somehow looked into my sole and saw something which made me even more nervous about talking to her. Like I said, she's such a polished lady and I am such a ...ahhh.....novice/rookie at this whole who am I game. Well not exactly.......have you ever heard this song by Jahiem.....it has a line that goe something like "have you ever seen a lion sleep on the belly of a lamb".....well guess who's the lion. I don't know what I am trying to say but the women has a strong presense and I am loving it but I felt like I was living some sort of lie. Is there anything wrong with finding someone attractive and not telling them? Okay, a little background....I was married for several......SEVERAL YEARS......and I know little about relationships and the whole getting to know you thang so excuse me if I sound a little lame.....for real! Anyway, as I ramble on I find myself getting deeper and deeper in this......*smile*...ahhhh...you know. So maybe this is serving as my confession....and if she never wants to talk with me again ......I'll ...ahhh.....you know.....or do you? As I mentioned I was in her city and I so much wanted to meet her and just give her a big hug. I wanted to give her a big smile and hope to receive one. BUT I was scared because my heart was not in the right place. Don't get me wrong, I am attracted to women because of what they represent and that whole intellectual thang but..... But back in my mind .....some where down there in a place I didn't want anyone to know about,.. in a place with no rejection or consequence .....if she would have said...."Carey, what are you doing in the near future, why don't you come down and lets talk face to face, lets go to a movie", I would have stumbled over myself and said..........okay! Hey, let me shut up, I am probably embrassing this women. Now where do I go with this.......what can I say to....ahhhh.....you.know???

Carey you can say: Honey, I was so overwhelmed by your phone presence that I couldn't find the words to express how wonderful our conversation made me feel. Not to mention that I found that you stimulated my mind in ways that I had long forgotten. I would very much LOVE to come and meet you. Take you out to dinner...maybe a movie continue our conversation. Would you like to do this? Just say the word and I'm there... You COULD say that to her...maybe. Sorry I haven't called you yet, Sir Carey. But believe me, I will. And you already know that I care. How many times have I asked about you on this very board...hmmmm??? Now quit bein a chicken and go for the gold man! Life is too short not too.

Wow. Carey, my [n-wrod], what’s up! I did occur to me to do something material for Cynique, 10,000th post. It occurred to me that I could rename the board, but somehow I find that idea sacrilegious. Man if folks are making love connections here I definitely gots to get paid (help subsidize the promotion of those literary authors). I have camera phone video of Tananarive, Blair and Steven Barnes, I’ll add editing it to my seemingly infinite list of things to do, for the web site, this weekend.

No. If the content of those posts was insubstantial, then I would agree. But the majority of them are quite substantial. Whether one agrees or not, you always manage to put a different spin on things, provide an alternative perpsective, call others out on BS (as well as sometimes contribute BS of your own ), and often provide first-hand "historical" witness. I wish you would start more threads, but I appreciate that you support everyone else's attempts at starting conversations. Many a time I have posted some (what I fear will be) esoteric topic to the sound of crickets chirping, only to have you appear on the thread and give your opinion. I do so much appreciate that! LOL Troy, maybe you should rename the platinum level after Cynique... |

Troy: a camera phone video? Can you actually see anything? Boy I am getting old: I remember when camera-phones first came out I thought "Why would anyone want a camera on their phone?" But the utility of that has made itself apparent, catching all sorts of moments that otherwise would have gone undocumented. Now phone videos... The other day I was at a stoplight at an intersection I go through every day. On this particular day there was a man outside talking on a pay phone. I couldn't take my eyes off of him--I hadn't even realized that there was a pay phone on that corner and had never seen anyone use it. (In fact, I could barely recall seeing more than 3 pay phones along my various commutes.) It was very disconcerting--like seeing someone on a orner tapping out a telegraph or something. |

Yvettep, or like writing letters huh? The vast majority of letters I get come from the incarcerated. I'm also way ahead of you! Before I read your post, I'd already renamed the levels. You can see the new level names reflected on the boards now. Each level is an order of magnitude higher than the previous level. If you all do not like the name I selected; let me know what you would like me to use instead. Yvette, actually I meant to write my camera's video feature. As opposed to an actual deviced designed solely to take videos. As the technologies converge what you call these technological marvels will blur. If the gizmo in my pocket can take videos, photographs, serve as a PDA, create spreadhseets and word documents and make phone calls what do you call the darn thing? Cynique while the quantity of your posts is indeed prodigious, it is the quality of your contributions that really make the impact.

Troooooy, what's up my (N-Word)!!! Hey, I like that little N-Word thang...that's slick! I thought you didn't have time to hit the board so I thought I'd slip that little "Cyn-Cyn needs a comeup" on the board. I know what it was, you saw my name on the block and thought you better see what I was doing in your house. You knew it had to be something......ahhh....hold on.....ahhh....good *smile*. I know the name changes had little to do with my crying about it but man, you done hurt an ol'school like me. Man VETERAN POSTER. I would have rather have been an O.G. poster or even knothead poster *LOL*......but an OLD VET......that's sortta......sort of like calling the women retired worker girls.....I mean .....sort of . You know, i can hear the conversation now, "oh yeah she's a OLD VET she was a mud stumper".....I mean....ahhh sort of. But on the real, what you trying to do, you know they have a name for what you suggested about gettin' paid it's call P.I.M.P.,,,*LOL*. No man, I was just expressing my ....ahhhh.....fantasy. But you know, A-Womon laid it out there, damn I wish I would have said that. That was some nice s**t. See, women know what they NEED! A-Womon, you KNOW I KNOW!!! Love you too! Check out my next post, I thought it deserved a spot of it's own.....I think I am going to title it...ahhh...let me think...**thinking**...ahhh...oh, I had a nice day...no...I had a great day! |

A-womon....before I start my next post I thought I'd once again comment on you "Carey you could have said this".... You are right! I was knocking at the back door wasn't I *smile*. I should have just come on with it ....huh!? Ohhh...before I get lost in some other thought, I thought I'd embarass you some by telling the board something about you.....utt oohhhh......I know the wheels are spinning now..........RELAX......it's a good thang......really......I think *smile*. Okay....I think I've already said that......wait, maybe havwe haven't .....anyway......A-womon and I have been friends since the time she hit the board, we have talked into the weee hours of the night. We have shared laughs and she has pissed me off on occasion *smile*. But what I wanted everyone to know is that she is cool people and not what she projects on the board ......well not totally....not TOTALLY. She does have a soft side like most....most women do. Now this is what I wanted to say the most.....she is probably one of the sexiest looking thangs in OHIO. Really......the girl is stunning. Now an old fool like me couldn't do nothing with that but spoil her so she was safe....BUT.....we talked. She remains a friend of mine!
