She will be at the Scott Joplin House from 1-4 (you can't get much more historic and Afrocentric than THIS!)

What will she be doing there? Do you have a link to a news release or something or did she call you and tell you personally??? You know, I was a little disappointed with her book "Joplin's Ghost." I can't remember now specifics, but I just expected something different I guess. Plus I think it had something to do with being more interested in her imaginings of what Joplin's life was like, based on historical research. I think the story actually bogged down when she got to the current day scenes and I never really felt what I should have for those current day characters. |

And "kudos" to chrishayden for assuming everybody would know that "da Lou" refers to St. Louis. Just another example of how he skips a step in his thought processes and how his world begins and ends with St. Louis. |

(I just got a little email-- I was going to share it with you but then you got all persnickety kissy kissy You know, I was a little disappointed with her book "Joplin's Ghost." I can't remember now specifics, but I just expected something different I guess. I think the story actually bogged down when she got to the current day scenes and I never really felt what I should have for those current day characters (I read it. It think the skipping back and forth distracted and wasn't done well--it is very difficult to write in the first person on a character that is nothing like you-- She has stated, though that on occasion she felt like she was almost doing automated writing on the Joplin parts I liked those better, I think. It seemed like two different books, pasted together. That was a problem with "The Living Blood" I'm going to look at the book again. And if I make it to the event, I'll follow your instructions to the letter and give her a piece of your mind for you. Stand up and shake my finger in her face... |

You know, I was a little disappointed with her book "Joplin's Ghost (I went back through the book and figure that some trouble was that in trying to go back and forth between Joplin and Phoenix, the protagonist, she did not present either as strong as they might have been. The book might have come off better with Joplin as just a ghost--maybe could have had one imaginative sequence where Phoenix was transported back to St. Louis in the early 1900's. Also, just like I said it being two books--it seemed like it was a mix of hip hop and Supernatural and I don't know if Due sufficiently connected with the hip hop sensibility Hip hoppers don't read, and maybe she might have done better to have Phoenix be more like her earlier protagonists like in The Living Blood. |
