I get these messages from time to time. I do not know how I got added to the group, but the title alone is usually enough for me to just ignore the email.
However this morning something caught my attention in the preview pane and interested me enough to read the entire email.
Much of the content speaks to topics covered here. Everything from BET (lack of responsibility, to use of the n-word and even the read a book video.
There are links videos of Amos Wilson (http://authors.aalbc.com/amos.htm) an important voice in our community and even a link to the complete video (that you can download) Dr. John Henrik Clarke's "A Great and Mighty Walk -- If the email just contained this information alone it would have been priceless. I have been selling the video here for $50 for a couple of years. I know how much it cost to buy wholesale so I'm not sure how it is being made available for viewing and download, for free, but it is indeed there.

Black Enterprise (BE) magazine and Black Entertainment Television (BET) took two decidely different approaches to viewing the concept of "culture." Before we get to the differences, however, here are two clips on culture and hip-hop symbolism from the late Dr. Amos Wilson who had it oh-so figured out.

Kudos to Earl Graves Sr., founder/owner of Black Enterprise, who took the N-word issue up a notch by silencing the microphone and removing comedian/actor Eddie Griffin from the stage. Headlining a big annual event, Griffin decided he would go for it and use this derogatory racial slur regardless of the common sense behind not carelessly and recklessly using a word that's been used historically to dehumanize his own people. Graves told the audience that Griffin would be paid in full but that he would "not allow our culture to go backwards." BET continues on its path of self-destruction. Although its downslide started while Black owned, it's officially fallen off the cliff now that it's under the ownership of Sumner Redstone and Viacom. While there are Blacks seemingly at the helm, as Amos Wilson stated in one of his many lectures for this type of situation, their education has prepared them "to put a Black face on White power and to defend White interests." BET is promoting the "Read A Book" video, which ideally is not a bad concept because reading is not promoted enough in American culture. But BET's concept to promote this with excessive N-word usage, excessive cursing, booty shaking, violence, sexual innuendos, and more totally loses the potential power of its impact and ends up being nothing special. The creator (Bomani Armah) and director (Tyree Dillihay) appeared on CNN recently and here's their attempt to justify their "socially conscious" video to encourage kids - or is it the 18-34-year-old demographic? -- to "read a book, read a book, read a mufu**in book."

Again, kudos to Earl Graves for doing something many Black executives in the media/entertainment and other professions (education, marketing, politics, religion, etc.) haven't had the guts or cultural awareness to do.

Chris, don't want to live in the type of a society where words can be banned.
However I fully respect folks that want to educate and enlighten people to the point they they CHOOSE not to use the word.
I agree it is a nice site full of the type of information I listed above.

I went to see Cherly Underwood (sp) and that hussy was using the N word like she owned it and I laughed my azz off. Of course she also used "MF", the other word for penis, showed those who needed it how to suck...well you know :::blank stare::: etc..whew. Im tired as shyet as I went to the 12 midnight show that didnt start until 1 and I didnt get home until 3 and had to be at work at 8:45 am...whew
