I'm so sad to report that a sweet friend of mine and a true legend---Dr. Asa Hilliard---passed away in Egypt from malaria. I guess it was last night, I don't know. I got the news directly from his daughter, so I'm sure it's true. I knew him to be a very intelligent, kindhearted and extremely black-identified black man who was one of the few male academics who encouraged what I had to say and called me "Firecracker". I wish I could think of something to say that would do him justice---but at this moment, it's just too painful and he was too brilliant a man to describe with mere words. You can't write down men like him. All my love, forever, Asa. "Firecracker"
