Did anyone else attend? I thought it was a nice talk, he read from three parts of the earlier chapters and answered a few questions then signed.
I asked him when the movie for The Emperor of Ocean Park was going to be released and he said he didn't know...he sold the film rights and left it at that. LOL I am looking forward to seeing it though, and am enjoying New England White! |

I did not know about the event -- if I did I would have attended.
New York is just one of those cities were so many good thing are happening you can't make them all.
Out of curiosity, what were the demographics (age, race) of the crowd? How many people roughly in attendance?
How did you learn about the event?

Troy,
There were easily 100 people there - all ages and races, which I thought was especially cool. Older white men and women, young black men and women, Asians, Indians, everyone represented!
I learned about the event completely on the humble - I was at Petco on Saturday getting food for my kitten and decided to peek in B&N to see what was new, and the big sign was in front of the store so I wasn't going to miss that for the world!
BUT - a site that I LOVE for its thorough NY signing details is www.stilljohn.com ! I have found out about several that way and always make it a point to check at the beginning of each month so I can note my calendar.

When he first began his reading, he said that he noticed there was a big difference between his touring for fiction vs nonfiction because the audience was smiling. LOL He said that he wrote this book in the third person because that's how the story came to him, and that he was working on another book due out next summer. I believe that's the one he mentions in the interview I posted.
He also talked about his summer reading list, but said he would not mention which fiction books he was reading because he found that when he used to, he would get lots of angry emails over his choices. LOL! He keeps a notebook for ideas and moments of inpsiration, and finds that he gets a lot of them when he's talking to his wife - who he said was also present.

You are right the Steven Carter crowd was indeed cool, really cool.

While some of the HTML tages do work, you;d be better off reading the "Help/Instructions" link in the blue border at the bottom of the page.
To embed a photo simply click the "Upload Attachment" button. next to the Post message button. The rest will be obvious. The image in your message will look something like "\ popjpeg{28920,"} but you can view it preview your post.

That is tooooo funny - the interview you posted is the same one that a friend sent me but from another site! I will peruse this site more thoroughly from now on...I usually come straight to the boards cause I know this is where all the action is. LOL

Yes, the story is written in the third person, however, the prologue is in the second person and even more interesting is that the narrator's "you" is the white reader.

Interesting, I remember the prologue talking about Vera's but that was 500 pages ago...I'm almost finished with the book! I have to go back and look at that again. LOL |

I've just started "New England White", and I'm finding it a challenging exercise in reading because for me total focus is required to absorb its prose and follow its plot. But, I'm liking it so far because it's a change of pace from pap fiction. |

As I was saying, I've just started "New England White", and I'm finding it a challenging exercise in reading because for me total focus is required to absorb its prose and follow its plot. I'd rather stimulate my mind by reading a novel where the pages are a canvass for the author's word pictures. This is a book you experience and you don't have to think its a masterpiece in order to be drawn into it. |

I began New England White (as an audiobook) on the plane on my trip to Hawaii. So far I am enjoying it a great deal. I just finished Casanegra on the beach yesterday. These two books are very different from each other in many ways. But I enjoy both. |

I'm also reading and liking "New England White". Once you get on the author's wave length, you just wade through the stream of his verbosity and follow the intriguing story-line. |

Yeah, I was tickled to see Kimmer back in action myself. I couldn't stand her in The Emperor of Ocean Park, but Misha was such a pussboy that he let her run all over him. And then reverse and put it in drive again. LOL
Let me know who's done so we can have a bit of a discussion? |

Hi, Cynique! Yes, the collapse was such a shock. My husband usually takes it on his way home from work. We spent the first few days of our vacation fielding calls from relatives just double checking that we were indeed safe in Hawaii.
Right now they are working overtime to add additional lanes elsewhere in time for state fair--a huge event around here.
Re: NEW--give me a couple more days and I'll be finished and would love to discuss w/any "darker nation" folks and "paler nation" folks, too! LOL |

Hi, Yvette! Glad you were chillin in Hawaii instead of rolling in Minnesota. I'm still waiting for Prince to check in. He hasn't called me lately. LOL I'm in the homestretch of "New England White" also and am very pleased with how I'm now keeping the oddly-named characters straight. |
