Dear Family, Yesterday and today, I recevied word from dear friend Rha Goddess and Darrell McNeill about SEKOU SUNDIATA. He is terribly ill. Rha Goddess sends this message from the family: "On behalf of the family of Sekou Sundiata we would like to thank you for all your prayers and concern. Sekou is still very ill and this is a highly critical and sensitive time. Because of this, the family is requesting that people NOT attempt to contact the hospital for more information NOR should they attempt to visit. The best thing that all of us can do right now is send up our prayers that Sekou has a full and speedy recovery." Today, I also received this news from Darrell McNeill, Director of Operations for the Black Rock Coalition: "The hospital has reported that [Sekou] has no brain function and massive organ failure." I don't know what else to say. Sekou is a MASTERFUL poet/wordsmith/thinker. I have had the blessing of seeing him perform on numerous ocassions. He's pure genius! My small contribution toward sharing his art is providing his bio inside this email for those who don't yet know how gifted and elevated this man is (see below). As the family requested, please take a moment and say a prayer for Sekou. april silver AKILA WORKSONGS, Inc. :-( ------------------------ I met Sekou in 1999 at Sacred Circle/Spoken Word A Three-Day Festival of the Spoken Word October 29-31 1999 http://events.aalbc.com/particip.htm. I was always proud of him because he is from my neighborhood, plus he is just really very good at what he does. Rap "artists" Listen and Learn. http://authors.aalbc.com/sekou_sundiata.htm

Troy's Note JESUS CHRIST! I was just talking to a friend saying that, despite getting information from a known source that Sekou had passed, than I would not put it in my newsletter until I heard from a official source. I apologize for forwarding misinformation. Keep Sekou in your prayers. The following is information I recieved this morning: -------------------------------- Please be advised that, all other rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, esteemed poet Sekou Sundiata is as of this writing (Tuesday morning, July 17, 2007) still fighting the latest battle for his life. Yes, he is in a hospital, he does remain in a coma and on life support, and, yes, he's still in critical condition. But he's still with us and still fighting back! Yesterday, an eeg was performed on him and sometime today or tomorrow a cat scan will be underway. As best as I could gather, on or about Friday, July 6th, Sekou suffered a mild heart attack, and on Sunday, July 8, he was doing well and walking about. Six days later, on the morning of Friday, July 13th, he was released from the hospital and returned home. That night, roughly after 10pm, he was hit again, this time more seriously. He was taken to Brooklyn Hospital and eventually transferred to a hospital in Westchester County, where he remains in relatively stable and critical condition. You may contact me: Louisreyesrivera@aol.com for further updates. Later. Louis. MEANWHILE, please spread the following statement as best as you would: Dear Family, Friends: Minutes ago, I spoke with a representative from Sekou Sundiata's family and the family wishes for me to let you know that, despite what has been circulating on some parts of the Internet, Sekou is "alive and maintaining." While it is true that Sekou is very ill, he has NOT made his transition. He is alive. The family asks that your prayers and thoughts be toward his health and speedy recovery. Please stay tuned for updates from the family via "Put On BLAST!" Feel free to forward this message in an effort to cancel any rumors you may have received. Prayerfully, April Silver AKILA WORKSONGS, Inc. |

I am ashamed to admit that I am not familiar with this spoken-word poet, but I mourn the passing of someone who obviously had a great impact on the black literary scene. R.I.P. |
