Hey Emanuel, Excellent post! You give some good tips on how to avoid the mistakes you made. Emanuel: "Although the publisher is rather unique because authors are never required to buy copies of their own books, ..." A_womon: This one partial point I have not found to be the case. In my case, and in the cases of a couple of other authors that I have spoken with, the publisher does give you a certain number of copies for free and generally will note in the contract the number of books you and your agent if you have one, will be given. After that if you need more books you do have to purchase them from the publisher, but you will generally be given a very generous discount. By the way--did you find an agent to represent book three? You didn't say on the blog... |

Hey A_womon: Good to hear from you, and thanks for asking. With subsidy publishers, I guess it all depends on who you choose when it comes to the details of the contract. I'm currently speaking with a few publishers who are interested in buying the rights to "Where is the Love?" and it's sequel I'm trying my best to finish. I will also be searching for publishers to purchase my non-fiction business title "Dead Guys Don't Buy." If the publishers don't buy, I will be looking for a literary agent.

Emamuel, I don't know about subsidy publishers, I've not dealt with them, I meant traditional publishers... hey do you have a website? I'll go there and give you my email if you do. I believe I can give you a couple of good leads re good agents and their contact info... |

Emanuel, This was an excellent article...i tried to post, but had to register first, which i did. I found all your examples to be true and have taken to heart all that you have said...you and i have been down similar paths, so i know, like you that mistakes will be made, but now that i'm heading in the right direction....success is also on it's way! Good luck on the publisher/agent search! |

Emanuel, you have acquired so much expertise in the field of publishing you should start a literary consulting business and charge for your advice and assistance. |

Thanks Sisg. Cynique, I don't think there's any money to be made being a literary consultant, too much free information on the Internet. Besides, I'd much rather share the info for free to give back and let others learn from my mistakes than to charge for it. |
