Should it? If it can, why and how? |

Doesn't it do so already? Just by virtue of its being? If not, you'll have to be less telepathic in communicating what you are getting at. |

Chris I agree with Yvettep. Your question is vague at best -- especially coming from you. Perhaps, for clarity, you should define what you mean by "Promote Black Literacy". |

Well, everybody who comes round here can read. But can AALBC reach out to the barely literate, the illiterate and those at the point where they are choosing between literacy and illiteracy and encourage them to read?

Hey Chris, Yeah AALBC.com (read: Troy) can do that too, but not at this stage. I have my hands full trying to appeal to people who can already read, and get them to read more. Perhaps even at this stage if I faciliate turning someone onto a book, that they they like; and that person, in turn shares it with someone else who can barely read... then perhaps their is already an impact. I do know for example that the novels like Push (by Sapphire and Relentless) the Coldest Winter Ever along with all of the urban lit is promoting people who are semi literature now to read more... One person (web site) can not do it alone it is a community effort. One strategy alone will not work - it will take many on different fronts. What prompted the question?

Troy: Under the spell of Zane I'm into a sort of business and promotion bag--thinking about how the site could use the good pub that accrues from such work--you could post pictures of yourself surrounded by grateful parents, kids, and older people who are trying to learn or relearn to read and also push the site as a place to come by and shop and BUY the books they want, etc. You would sell more books--to the literate and newly literate and to those who were impressed by your efforts-- I wish I lived in New York now so I could meet with you and talk this over-- I understand, however that you work primarily off the web--wondering how AALBC might--like Zane--spring off the web and start dealing in the real world-- |

As someone who has done the very work you are suggesting Chris, may I say this. You can do it in conjuction with Troy or alone. There are many ways to spread literacy. I could give you some ideas if your interested. LiLi |

Chris, in the most basic sense Zane is selling sex. The reading part, while desireable is incidental. AALBC.com, at least in this point in space-time will never be a popular as Zane -- unless we sell sex - which is not my intent. As an aside, I recently started another web site recently http://videovixenmovie.com/ to capitalize this sex thing. It is more of an experiment than anything else at ths point. I do know that Karrine Steffans book Confessions of a Video Vixen, far and away, out sold any other book on the AALBC.com web site last year -- and I did not active promote it. My experiement will be to determine if the http://videovixenmovie.com domain can generate traffic and revenue with with less effort. The hardest thing for a web site to do is generate traffic. Can the video vixen site (a site selling sex) generate traffic more easily. Chris are you familiar with The Brother to Brother Symposium? http://www.theliteraryevent.com/symposium

Chris, I believe any organization can work in conjunction with local schools and local government to promote literacy. Here in Ohio, we have the program described on the following page: http://www.ode.state.oh.us/GD/Templates/Pages/ODE/ODEDetail.aspx?page=3&TopicRel ationID=890&ContentID=7667&Content=22544 I guess it all depends on the time and money you have and the level of dedication you want to make to this effort.
