I know a Black (AA) photographer who lives in Minneapolis. He loves it there; says they have a great nightlife. The majority of Whites there are of Scandinavian ancestry. He describes them as "harmless". And Minnesota does have a concentrated interracial population. What jobs are available? I really don't know. I don't know too many people with "real" jobs. Most people I know are in Arts and Entertainment. Have you tried googling "minnesota"? |

Hardy-har-har, Doberman23 Well, I live here with my family and we're all Black and we personally know many more than 4 others so I can safely say you are off on your estimate! Ceelove, where in Minnesota are you thinking of? I mostly know of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and Saint Paul and surrounding suburbs). Minnesota has traditionally had a pretty robust economy combined with a reasonable cost of living. It is consistently ranked in the top 5 by surveys of such things as health/quality of health care and "livability." There are, from my vantage point, 5 groups of African Americans here: *those who come here because it is generally a safe place for diverse families (e.g., gay and lesbian couples, multiracial families, interracial couples); *those who are in the "creative class"--artists, musicians, etc...sometimes these are folks who originally came here for college but stayed; *temporary folks--college students, professors, professionals who have transferred (e.g., workers for Medtronic, 3M, etc); *new immigrants (mostly Somali) and "migrants" from nearby major Black areas (e.g., Chicago, East Chicago and Gary Indiana); *and long-term Minnesotans--for example those whose ancestors were on their way to Canada during or following slavery and decided to just stop here! Without knowing what you'd be coming here for or what you want out of a city, I cannot say if this place is for you or not. Just check it out sometime! (Once during our beautiful late spring/summer and once in our colder winter--wouldn't want to try to hide that!) |

Just left there to move to La. It is a great place to raise kids. Jobs are good for the skilled worker. There is a large number of Somali immigrants. Many blacks feel the MN caters to immigrants because of how they are brought in and given jobs and opportunities that regular American blacks aren't given so readily. There was a rumor that immigrants got to live tax free for like seven years. I still don't know if that's true though. As far as the interracial aspect. I tend to call Minnesota the interracial dating capital of the US. It's not a bad thing but from what I've observed, educated black women who want to date black men have a hard time there. Their competing with white, Hmong, and Native American women for the attention of the prized black man (even in the hood!!). Sometimes you'll see people together and scratch your head wondering how the hell did that happen. Like, if these same people were living in another state, you would question whether they would be together. It's interesting. The music scene is dead! Minnesota would rather support sports and outdoor gaming over art and entertainment. People think just because the purple one stayed there that the music scene is poppin. Prince has a studio that he doesn't let anybody use. Rarely he will do a set but that's few and far between and in fact, I think it's closed down. Jam and Lewis left a few years ago to set up their label in Hollywood a few years ago. So there's nothing really going on musically. Last but not least. MN definitely has a control issue. They want to do things their way, they don't like to be wrong and they don't like too much change too soon. They try and micro manage every aspect of your life. If you want a sliver of the pie, you're fine. If you want an actual sizeable piece, then you're in trouble. -Unless, that is, your wealthy and got it going on. AND if you are wealthy, you wouldn't pick MN for a place to stay.
