I'm coming home from an Artists' reception last night. A couple of days ago I had had some positive ghetto experience that left me smiling, walking down the street, saying Hi to everybody, glorying in the crumminess of it all! Ah, the ghetto! Police sirens! Dead dogs stinking in the vacant lots. Crackheads and gangbangers on the corner. Niggas fucking with me and shit! Anyway, last night I get out the car and I'm walking through the big gate at the end of my block (no lock on it, wide open, remind me to tell you a story about how that fell through) All of the sudden I hear a collison from the street. This towtruck was hauling a car out of the Church's chicken lot when, BAM! This old pickup truck rams it full in the side. Drunk ass driver staggers out, staggering in circles while people come up and cuss him out. Cop cars keep going. "I don't even believe this shit!" I yell out. "That tow truck driver's boss is going to think he's lying!" People start coming out of their houses, assigning blame for the accident and they ain't seen a thing. I live in a Chester Himes novel! |

Chris, do you live in a "gated" community? Check this out: Negroes came up with this grandiose, impractical scheme to gate off several blocks in the area I live in. There was gonna be one gate. You was gonna have to have an ID to get in and have permission for guests, etc etc. This is for a bunch of working class Negroes in the heart of the inner city. The idea was that this might keep out the crime. Hell, they'd been gating half the criminals up with us--not to mention the alleys would have still been open. The city said, "That's cool, Negroes. You gonna have to pay for your own street cleaning, garbage pick up, etc. That was the end of THAT, but not before two massive gates were built with thousands of dollars worth of city money that are wide open. I know you would love to comment on the hypocrisy of my posts by my living in a gated community--not that I wouldn't like to live in one, save it would be a gated community that excluded all UNCLE TOMS and HOUSE NEGROES. But no. The gate there is was supposed to be locked but they stole the gate so many times they just leave it open. And so it goes. |

That's "funny". Where I live they've put gates up at a lot of the alleys - but they're never locked either. Same thing here - the gates are supposed to cut down on gang and drug activity. Guess how well that's working . . . |
