If you take your kids to see "Bee Movie" make sure you are prepared to discuss the hidden greater social implications of this film. I just saw a preview and can't get past the underlying hegemonic message. There are points throughout this film which strongly (although subtly) affirm this message, as well. Seinfeld produced it. Oprah and Chris Rock provide their voice talent and I cannot imagine why. I have to believe they thought the message was harmless, since it's an animated film, BUT the message is VERY dangerous. Judge for yourselves, but the more perceptive of the bunch will agree, Dreamworks ought to be ashamed of themselves for feeding this filth to our children. And Ladies, black women.. get ready.. According to American Gangster our black bodies are good for nothing but processing filth and not love. You'll see. I won't spoil the plots, but just keep your filters on black people. |

the story is about a bee, enlightened, yet disgruntled by an oppressive (human) state, who sues the humans and wins. the lawyer representing the humans is a gluttonous white male with a southern twang whose main argument is that relinquishing human power over bees would, in fact, "upset the natural order of things." during this trial, the complaining bee "racializes" the issue, explicitly comparing the plight of the bees with that of blacks in relation to "the man." the bees won the case and the story goes that flowers ceased to exist, the food chain completely disrupted. ultimately, it were the bees who took on the moral responsibility to resubmit themselves to oppressive human control, to reestablish the "natural order of things" to save the world, in essence. this last point can be inferred, as it is rather keenly subtle. this is supposed to be a comedy...for children. |

But bees can fly and make nectar and all have jobs and each hive even has its own Queen Latifah. And considering the resume of other species like flies who are hatched from maggots festering in animal dung and rotting bodies, or mosquitoes who suck blood and cause deseases, or spiders who trap hapless creatures in their webs and are full of venom bees don't get such a bad rap. Of course, butterflies have it made. Oh, well. Is this film being touted as a children's movie. It's not animated is it? Don't the actors all wear costumes. It's satire. And apparently politically incorrect. My cup of tea. |

blood sucking maggots, eh? it's funny you'd mention... the film also has deep jewish cultural intimations, compliments of Mr. Seinfeld. he should not have even bothered with this one. chris rock is the blood sucking mosquito (voice) in the film btw. thinking he may very well be Seinfeld's b*tch. He bothered not to show up for the premiere with his kids, while everyone else did. something tells me he knows what time it is about this movie. |

I am not sure what it is rated, but it was advertised during the last kid movie I took my daughters to see. I assumed it was animated--at least the coming attractions all are. |

OK, the movie apparently is animated but I do remember seeing Jerry Seinfeld dressed up like a bee. I think it has something to do with a gimmick wherein a camera crew goes behind the scenes to interview the stars of the movie who are actually bees and insects, - who are actually actors dressed up like them(?) The movie also has a PG rating, suggesting that some scenes may not be suitable for children. Damn! I should be getting paid by Seinfeld for all of this free publicity.

I think I'm going to see this movie. Its been my experience that some people on this site are a little too sensitive about such issues. I remember board members were saying that Seinfeld never has black characters on his show years ago. As it turned out, there were numerous occasions when young black comedians had bit parts on his series. I can also remember back when someone said that the penguin movie "Happy Feet", "wasn't for us." That movie turned out to be hilarious when I saw it. I think I'll make up my own mind and let you folks know what I think. I don't trust three quarters of the the conodetoro spewed up in here. Folks trying to sound uppity and finding fault in every little thing. If I were a young black man in America I wouldn't be able to read or watch anything that wasn't written or directed by Blacks. Is that what Black America has evolved into. A collection of closed-minded bigots that will only listen to the regurgitations of like-minded wannabees?...(No pun intended)...Lmao...wannaBEES...get it? I kill myself sometimes. |

Years ago, in the book by Alex Haley, "Roots", didn't the Africans in the beginning of that book refer to the white slave hunters that captured young black men in the jungle and shipped them to America as "To-"...No, that must have been something else. Have you read that book, Toubobie? |

See what you wish, Lambd. As a parent it is very annoying seeing certain images and viewpoints constantly being drilled in my children's minds--ones that definitely do not have their humanity at heart. I appreciate any opinions that help me filter which movies may be aligned with my parenting efforts and which may not be. "Happy Feet," for example, was a wonderful message for kids who are often "different" in their social environments. As an adult, I can be critical about things like this. I am trying to teach my children such critical thinking skills, too. Being a parent of Black children is a very revolutionary activity, IMO. It ain't an easy job, but it's the best one I ever had! |

You aint the only parent on this site, Yvettep. I merely meant to point out that one man's garbage is another man's treasure. We need to strive to continue being individuals. Let's not doom this effort by Seinfeld, Rock, Winfrey, and others simply because a few diehards are condemning it for 'racist' reasons. There are way too many 'saviours' on this board that are willing to hop on a bandwagon of criticism simply because that is the only one going by at the time. Sometimes one should try and open one's mind and make one's mind up for him/herself before condemning an animated movie, which may or may not be innocent. I remember seeing a movie one time that alluded to a pool table as being a tool for racists because its green(the earth), the cueball is white(the white race as a whole), and the object of the game is to systematically knock off the other races until the eight-ball(the black race)is finally knocked off the planet by the winner. I don't know about you, but I can't see Chris Rock reading this script, not recognizing its racist intent, doing the movie anyway, then realizing how racist it is later. Gimme a break. Please. This is one of the reasons people stop posting here. Some of you have got to start forming your own opinions about things and stop repeating every little thing they read or hear and wanting to carry the cross for that cause. "See what you wish, Lambd" I never thought twice about buying a ticket to this movie until someone said it had an 'underlying hegemonic message'. I didn't even know what that was so I looked it up. Now I'm intrigued. How in the hell could intelligent blacks, who obviously don't need the money agree to such a thing. I seriously doubt this cartoon is as bad as Toubobie is making it out to be. However, I promise you and everyone else on the board, if it is as dangerous as all that, I will be the first black father to let you know. You will have to knock me down and pry the picket sign out of cold dead fingers before I stop protesting the showing of this movie. |

I was never under the impression that I am the sole parent here. I was only giving my opinion as a parent. I look forward to hearing your take on the movie, too. Certainly we can be individuals while simultaneously considering the advice and opinions of others. From the description of the movie that a poster gave, I decided this did not sound like the kind of movie that would fit with my program. Others' mileage, as they say, may vary. |

UGGHHH!!!!! Thanks soooo much! This now goes off the list of possible-sees... Sorry Yvettep, what an intriguing name. My tirade was based on this particular post alone. I see there is more depth to your personality than I originally thought. I made a huge mistake and I apologize for being so abrupt...... However, I stand by what I said about people on the board creating their own opinions rather than going by what a poster writes about any particular subject. I pray that you don't deny your daughter what may be an enjoyable movie-watching experience because of something someone said here. This person, by their own admission, hadn't even seen the movie themselves. They themselves are basing their opinions of an animated film on a preview and what someone else said. I just know that some of my fondest memories are from spending time at the movie theater with my daughters. We used to go often when they were young children all the way up until they were teenagers. Plenty of the movies were animated and a good portion of those were not only thought provoking, but funny. My kids have grown into fine, open-minded adults. Even though I won't go as far as attributing this to watching cartoons at the movies, I think to have denied them that small pleasure would have stolen something from them that they now, hopefully, look back on and smile. |

I borrowed the name from Reginald Mcknight's "White Boy Stories"... Yes.. "Toubobie" is a variation of "toubob" Read both.. so what.. I saw the film WITH filters on.. perhaps your filters have wider holes so all the shit can seep in. it'd be interested to smell, i mean hear what a shit brain has to say about that film. I saw the film. it is my job to be hyper-sensitive to such themes. I've given my reading of that film... pay your hard earned money and then give yours when that piece of crap comes out.. and be done with it. |

No problem, Lambd. I hesitated to engage you in disagreement, as you are such a mythical and loved figure on this board. LOL! Believe me, I often have to tame my adult critical thinking skills or else my daughters would never get to watch any TV or movies. I analyze for a living and it is easy for this over-analytical bent to seep into everything I do. I like to read a lot of opinions about movies. Other things I have heard about this one: *It is too long for a children's movie. *The whole mega-star doing voices is played out. *The whole adult-humor in children's films is played out. *It's just not funny. I could see the movie and disagree completely. But I would rather wait until DVD or on-demand to catch this one. Another up-coming movie also has my hackles up. I can;t think of the name, but it involves an animated princess who gets suked into modern-day, live-action NYC. In the previews there is a part where the prince (who also got sucked in) stabs his sword through the roof of a city bus. THe bus driver is a big Black woman who, of course, procedes to stop the bus, storming off of it with her hands on her hips, sternly intoning something like "Watchu doin on MAH busssssss!" ARGH! Probably the only Black character with speaking lines and this is what my daughters will get. But they will likely see it anyway and I will just have to work that much harder to balance that depiction with something else... |

First of all, how in the heck is a kid gonna even recognize the subtle and subliminal messages conveyed by this cartoon unless mommy/daddy points them out as the movie unfolds? I mean really, are 3,4,5,6,7 year olds REALLY going to be looking for the hidden messages? I can see it all now, "JJ, now this part right here, where the bee stung the white man and the white man smashed him with a rolled up newspaper, now that symbolized the racists oppression of the white race, keeping the black man from rising up and overthrowing the white caste system that has held him in bondage for centuries. And the newspaper is a symbol of the crushing, wall of racists messages that constantly slap the black man upside the head and keep him down." and little JJ replying "WTH??? Ma, could you please stop talking to me before I miss the entire M'n F'n movie?"

This discussion raises the question as to whether shielding our children from all negative things prepares them for the cruel hard world at large. Shouldn't kids be exposed to the misconceptions about their race so that when they encounter such bias they will then be equipped to cope with it? The key is to strike a balance in a child's outlook so that he can be independent enough to draw his own conclusions about how things exists in real life. In order to prepare a child to reject stereotypes, a parent has to have examples of it to point to. Parental guidance is important, but parental censorship should be tailored to the situation. IMO |

The key is to strike a balance in a child's outlook so that he can be independent enough to draw his own conclusions about how things exists in real life. In order to prepare a child to reject stereotypes, a parent has to have examples of it to point to. Couldn't agree more. It is what I do every day as a parent. There is no shortage of examples of bias, prejudice, etc. in every day life, and it is not necessary in this day and age for me to financially subsidize those images I am not comfortable with. The genius of repeated messages is that children do not need to "understand" them for repeated exposure to enable acceptance. Again, other parents may have other ideas for their own childrearing and I say more power to them. For my kids, however, the buck stops with me. |
