http://postsecret.blogspot.com/ I had heard of this site but dropped in only recently when I read that the blogger will be at my university today to promote a new book, "A Lifetime of Secrets," based on this project. Here's how the university promo for his talk describes his work: Warren, called the "most trusted stranger in America" reveals a new collection of secrets in his latest book. This collection lays bare the confessions of people at every stage of life and ultimately offers a glimpse into our collective psyche, touching on the hopes, dreams and fears of our relationships and experiences. A Lifetime of Secrets, contains photos of simple 4x6 postcards Warren has received from strangers, many have been transformed into works of art as they reveal the painful admission of infidelity, sentimental memories from the past, or the secrets they can't bear to share with anyone else. What do you all think? Is this site like the modern day tavern barkeep? Would you tell your secrets to this site? What purpose does it serve--even if some of the are fake/fantasies? I am fascinated by alternative art, or what folks choose to call "art." (Like the panhandling for reparations performance piece I talked about previously.) What do you make of something like this as a work of "art"?

Are these secrets that have never been shared with ANYONE else? If so, it would be interesting to know what the author thinks and feels about his responsibility and role as being the receiver of so many other people's deepest (and maybe darkest) secrets. |

I'd accept the idea that everybody has a parallel world of secrets. The will power and discipline required to conform with what society dictates can cause people to lapse and do unacceptable things in private. But keeping secrets that others have shared is always a three way-proposition between a person, his confidant, and his confidant's confidant. |

ABM, I'm not sure about whether these secrets on the site are first-time revealed or not. My guess is that some are and some are not. I do not think he has any restrictions on them. In fact, some do not even seem to be "secrets" at all, just things about people that may not be widely known. Some are quite sad. For example, one lady wrote on a postcard that she does not have any friends to throw her a bridal shower. Commenters wrote in to say that they would do it for her if she lived in their area. Cynique, I agree with your take on things. And many people have an amazing ability to compartmentalize and rationalize their actions. Me, I'd rather not know many of these kinds of secrets of the people I interact with every day. Ignorance can truly be bliss!! LOL |
