Why do the most ignorant have the biggest platforms? From USA Today DNA pioneer suspended after he's quoted saying blacks not as intelligent as whites Nobel laureate James Watson says he didn't mean to tell a British newspaper that blacks aren't as intelligent as whites. "To all those who have drawn the inference from my words that Africa, as a continent, is somehow genetically inferior, I can only apologize unreservedly. That is not what I meant. More importantly from my point of view, there is no scientific basis for such a belief," Watson said last night at the Royal Society in London, The Times of London reported. Watson was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1962 for his pioneering work with colleague James Crick on the structure of DNA. This paragraph in The Sunday Times sparked the outrage that may end up costing the 79-year-old scientist his job and his reputation: He says that he is “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really”, and I know that this “hot potato” is going to be difficult to address. His hope is that everyone is equal, but he counters that “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true”. He says that you should not discriminate on the basis of colour, because “there are many people of colour who are very talented, but don’t promote them when they haven’t succeeded at the lower level”. He writes that “there is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so”. At one point during the controversy, Watson appeared to be challenging the accuracy of the quotation. “I cannot understand how I could have said what I am quoted as having said. I can certainly understand why people reading those words have reacted in the ways they have,” he said, according to The Times. The paper says the interview was recorded and it stands by the story. In response to the quotation, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York says it has suspended Watson from his post as chancellor of the non-profit research group "pending further deliberation by the board." This is not the acclaimed scientist's first foray into controversy. A decade ago, he threatened to sue a British newspaper that said he advocated aborting fetuses that carried a gene that predisposed the baby to homosexuality. ("During an interview, I was asked about homosexuality and I related a story about a woman who felt her life had been ruined because her son was a homosexual and she would never have grandchildren," Watson tells The Independent. "I simply said that women in that situation should have a choice over whether or not to abort. I didn't say that fetuses found to have a gay gene should be aborted.")

This scientist is obviously not aware of how many "mentally superior" white people have been made fools of by the clever money-making schemes the Nigerians have flooded the internet with. These Africans have bilked gullible Caucasians out of millions of dollars by playing on their greed. |

These Africans have bilked gullible Caucasians out of millions of dollars by playing on their greed. (He knows and he don't give a damn. He's a white man and he's superior, dammit! They can't say they are physically superior, so they have staked out the intellectual realm. White people think, Black think what white people tell them. What he is saying is not so different from what Bill Cosby and the "Good" Blacks are saying. He is just including them in the mix. And so it goes. Be careful digging a pit for your enemy lest ye fall into it. |

You have to assume that I totally agree with what you, my enemy, is saying, chrishayden. I don't. You always try to make blameless saints out of the people the "good negroes" talk about. And this isn't the case. Further more, white men have been the ones who are superior at seizing and wielding power thanks to being superior at inventing deadly weapons. But that does not make all caucasian people superior to all negroid people. As usual your tunnel vision handicaps you and even your ego can't dig you out of the hole you're stuck in. |

What he is saying is not so different from what Bill Cosby and the "Good" Blacks are saying. Chris. Either you are choosing to paint with a very broad brush or you are mis-characterizing (purposefully or accidently) Cosby's message. It is a far, far stretch to claim inherent, genetic inferiority as opposed to the need to live up to potential by changing behavior. Agree or not with Cosby, there is no need to go to these lengths to discredit him. Actually, there are more than enough contrary statistics to counter his message of gloom and doom. But what BC definitely is not saying is that intervention is useless because of differences/deficiencies in DNA. |

It makes me question the reliability of DNA, if this is how the "creator" views black people. Did a bias exist in his research on DNA science too?? |

Robynmarie, the genetics blogs are all abuzz about this. From what I have seen, most serious scientists who work and blog in this area feel it is time (some think: long past) for Dr. Watson to move on. He has made important contributions, but now in the face of advancing age and perhaps even irrelevancy he is starting to make outrageous claims to get attention. Others have been harsher, pointing out a history of his allowing personal biases to shade interpretations of his important discoveries. There is even plenty of evidence that he--at best--failed to fully acknowledge the contributions of a female scientists in the discovery of the structure of DNA, or--at worse--purposefully appropriated her work to help his and Crick's own. But I think we are seeing the scientific establishment distance themselves from him and his remarks. It is not all noble, IMO. Genetic science needs to participation of large groups of the population, including groups that are non-White and non-Western. It would be a huge blow to this line of inquiry if groups mistrust genomic researchers even more than they may already. There have been several cases, for example, of groups in developing countries opting out of genomic research. And some commentators are calling the worldwide quest for human genetic markers "genetic colonialism." |

Scientists are always ranting and raving that there is no scientific basis for race. If that's true, then how could the Black race be genetically dumber than the White race if there's no scientific evidence of separate races? Sounds like one of those "who's on first" riddles to me... |

Chris, did you even read what I wrote? Who, exactly, is "they"? How is BC's message akin to the program of this mysterious "They" bent on Black race destruction? No disrespect--But perhaps if your posts were a little longer and less telegraphic you could get your points across better. I have seen you write lengthier posts that were more understandable so you are obviously capable. (And I am paying no mind to your attacks on Cynique via the invokation of my name. I understand you have to get a lot of little digs in to up your "Cyniquian" posting level to true greatness LOL ) |

Ya know, when everyone in the world has the same education opportunities as every one else then maybe then someone could carry out research to see how intelligence varies from race to race. |
