Kam's latest op-ed (http://aalbc.com/reviews/the_jena_blowback.htm) addresses the recent rash of nooses found in places ranging from Columbia University to a police station locker room (in LI New York if memory serves). The piece was interesting, but my take is completely different.
The noose incident in Columbia ignited a firestorm of media controversy. The were protests and speeches. Come on!? Am I the only one who thinks this is a ridiculous amount of attention for a non-event?
Was the outrage so dramatic was people were actually being lynched?
Racist hate is nothing new. I mentioned in a post a coupe of weeks ago that I’m a frequent target of this stuff: http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/1726/30386.html I made the post after noticing the media running with stories that I could not believe they found news worthy.
Earlier in the week a home owner was forced to take down a hangman’s noose on a Halloween display, because one of his neighbors was offended – and this made news.
Some 8th grader can paint a swastika on the floor of a school and community looses their minds. The 8th grader is only doing it to get people riled up.
Whip that kid’s butt, make him clean up the mess and be done with it. Do we need to close the school and have counselors speak to the kids?
When did we get to be so weak…
All this polictial correctness is a poor substitute for actual concern.
Kat Williams wears the hangman’s noose on the red carpet for the exact same reason – it will draw attention.
Look there are FAR more serious racist things we should be concerned with. Hanging an empty noose is not one of them.

Right. Once you energize these symbols with attention and anger then they take on a life of their own. It's like how being outraged and devastated by the use of the word "n i g g e r" has empowered it. Of course making a "federal case" out of such inflammatory incidents plays into the hands of activists with agendas. |

There are things you cannot do. You cannot yell fire in a crowded theater. There are things you can do to every group that are the same.

(This did not start with the Jena incident. There were incidences of that here back in the 90's. Some St. Louis Sheriff's deputies are bringing suit about a superior doing it two years ago.
This started when Republicans said it was okay to be a white supremecist.

(Dr. King would be disgusted by this attitude. It is obvious from the acceptance of parts of the Negro population of racism that he died for nothing.
You guys keep on tut tutting and when it happens to you just swallow and keep stepping.

Continuing to give a lot of publicity to these noose incidents inspires copycats, and things begin to snowball to the delight of pranksters who have discovered an Archilles heel. Not to mention how these episodes are just what the doctor ordered for those who depend on brouhahas like this to keep them in the news.
The Jews who survived and thrived after the holocaust and who are at the root of America's involment in Iraq just live for the sight of a swatsticka so they can wail and whine and throw their weight around. Screw them.
If you consider the source and calibre of people who have jumped on the noose bandwagon you will will know that a prolonged protest over their devilment fills them with a satisfaction because they know all they need is a piece of rope to blow the minds of black people. |

Oh shut up, chrishayden. yawn. Alway talking about how I would react if what I dismiss should happen to me. You don't know s h i t. Unlike you, I am not a wimp who is bloated with empathy for every slight someone else experiences.
And why would anybody have to go on cable channels and scream racism. What good would that do? What a stupid remark. If somebody put a noose on my doorstep I would first wonder what a white person was doing in my neighborhood and second call the police and report it, and third keep on truckin. Others can react anyway they want to. They're free to do this. And stop envoking the names of Rosa Parks and MLK every time your arguments are too weak to shut people up. |

Chris it is not about "bending over" it is about not being so easily manipulated.
When I was a kid it was not unusual to get into a fight because someone stepped on your sneakers (tennis shoes for you country boys) or talked about your mother.
The infraction may not have even bothered you, but your boys would be gathered around you saying "Yo! Dat nigga just stepped on your sneakers -- whachu gonna do?"
And with the mother stuff; a simple "Your Mother" was enough to start a fight or "Dat's Your Mother Nigga" was a common retort sure to piss off the person you was arguing with. Keep in mind "mother", not "nigga", was the operative word here. (reflecting on this now, it is a wonder anyone ever gets out of the ghetto).
Chris assuming a white racist hung a noose on your front door and was subsequently caught, what do you think an approriate punishment would be?

I dunno, Troy. Make him do 120 hours of community service in the hood, while wearing a white hood?? Charge him with a misdemeanor and give him a choice between paying a $1000 fine or watching the movie "Rosewood"? Have a face-to-face confrontation with me wherein I would tell him that he was a gnat and if I had some bug spray he would be history. Seriously, I've run out of solutions for dealing with racism. Guess I would just let the law deal with him. |

You know the more I think about it, the more horrified I get.
You guys are blaming Negroes for reacting to the insult, rather than the one who did the insulting.
I have heard this many times from abused wives:
"He don't mean it" "It's my fault" "I shouldn't have hit his fist with my face"
Many times theorists have equated the actions and attitudes of Negro apologists for racism to those of the classical abused spouse.

Here is the thing Chris, we can ALL contrive a reason to fight over something every single day; even for something as simple as: I don’t like the way that Nigga looked at me.
Whether the young man’s mother died or not if is never a good reason to launch into a physical altercation over someone saying something bad about your mother. I think even your oft sited Dr. King would agree. But I know we are all mostly guided by emotion rather than reason, so I understand the reaction.

Cynique, I don't believe racism will ever go away. Humanity will ALWAYS find a way to define one group over another as superior. If it is not race it will be religion, or geography, or nationality. People are just inherently crazy like that.
I just hope there are always enough sane people to create and enforce laws to prevent people from acting on their ill-conceived beliefs to the detriment of another.
I don’t think these laws should extend to the use of words (save the crowded theater example), or any other form or expression of thoughts or ideas (of course that includes such expression in books)..
