Her family put up a website for Nailaah http://www.bringnailahfranklinhome.com I hoped that they would find her alive. It would be interesting to find out what steps the police took since she did inform the police about her ex-boyfriend. |

So sad. What is it with all of these women turning up dead, after strained relations with the men in their lives? Knowing that they will be the number one suspect why are these men so stupid and so quick to kill. |

Unfortunately, since she's a black woman I know the media won't cover the search for the suspect and keep the public updated about this case since her body was found. If the media does it would definitely be a turnaround in coverage. I guess we can always go to the website for updated info. |

This case is headline news in Chicago. The police and the FBI have been on the case from the start. This girl was a graduate of the U of I and an upwardly mobile young woman from a middleclass family so maybe her murder will get the focus its deserves. |

"Unfortunately, since she's a black woman I know the media won't cover the search for the suspect and keep the public updated about this case since her body was found." This is very true. Had she been blond and blue eyed, her disappearance and discovery would have been covered daily on the national news front. But to have on going national coverage, you have to be a white female. Those are the rules. Lacy Peterson, Natalee Holloway, Jessie Davis, Nicole Brown Simpson, Anna Nicole Smith, JonBenet Ramsey, et al, were all white females and they recieved tireless national news coverage. Greta Van Susteren (Fox News), Rita Cosby ( MSNBC), and Nancy Grace (CNN Headline News), made sure everyone in America was informed daily as to disappearance and demise of these white females. It is a well documented fact that you will see a disproportionate emphasis on cases in which white girls and women — overwhelmingly upper-middle class and attractive, disappear. Bottom line is this; I remember when Tom Rosenstiel (director of the Washington-based Project for Excellence in Journalism) stated, "To be blunt, blond white chicks who go missing get covered and poor, black, Hispanic or other people of color who go missing do not get covered". End of subject. I don't know if it is an executive conscious decision based purely on race, but I do know there is a shameless widespread insidious unconscious bias based in media reporting of missing and murdered victims. I've always noticed it. In fact, I'll go on record by saying there is more public interest in news coverage regarding missing or murdered white women and girls (especially blonde's -they receive head of the line privileges), while cases involving missing men, non-white women, older or unattractive white women, will receive far less, little if any news coverage.

NTFS, If Nailah Franklin were NELSON Franklin, would even BLACK foks (who didn't REALLY know him) be fretting over his absence/murder? |

Good question. Young black men are collateral damage in the gang wars and cannon fodder for trigger-happy police. The murdering of them is so commonplace that it rates little attention. |

Cynique, I'm so sorry about what happened to your grandson. I should have said this months ago, but you had my sympathies back then too. |

Thank you for your thoughtfulness, a-womon. My grandson's name is one of the tattoos on my wrist; just a sad attempt to keep him with me always. |

"If Nailah Franklin were NELSON Franklin, would even BLACK foks (who didn't REALLY know him) be fretting over his absence/murder?" I don't know him, but if he was a black man, I think the answer would be obvious. As Ms. Cynique suggested, if you are a black male, your untimely demise is at the bottom of the list of public interest and concern.

Ntfs, Yeah. I mean, hey, I have 2 daughters. I can only imagine what Naliah's parents are enduring. But, really, what happened to her is no more tragic than what happens 10's of thousands of times every year. And at least she had enuff foks who cared about her which increased the chances of her being found. The foks on the milk cartoons are even THAT blessed.

Very sad. I am glad, though, that her loved ones now have this question mark removed from over their heads. Excellent points about disparities in reporting (and, often caring) about some missing people versus others. You all may already be aware of this, but this is an excellent site: http://blackandmissing.blogspot.com/ Hey, ABM--good to "hear" you voice. Re: Black (and other) men, I have heard reports that many law enforcement folks believe many of these cases are men who do not want to be found for various reasons. While that may be true in some cases (and still others may be abductions/murders), I often wonder if many more are cases of mentally ill or drug addicted guys who disappear into homeless populations, as well as suicides who end up as John Does... |

I think that she was more in the news, because of the recent complaints of non white females not featured as much when missing. As well, having family members who keep it 'news' helps. And, on the flip side what if Michelle Bell had been sitting jail, in LA, would there has been been as much fuss, mostly lead by black males? |

Unfortunately, this story is starting to take on sordid undertones and her family may end up wishing her case hadn't attracted to much publicity. According a TV reporter here in Chicago, the police have been questioning the guy who she filed a complaint against and he said he knew nothing about her murder but that their dispute was over some sex tapes they had made... |

Of course - this body has still not been positively identified as Nailah. The remains were badly decomposed after lying exposed to the heat, and it could not even be determined what race the female was. They are waiting on the results of what dental records show. |

Jmho, At ANY time there are 10's if not 100's of thousands of Black men who are doing time for sh*t they didn't do. Hell, some innocent brothas may have been EXECUTED for murders they didn't commit. This Jena 6 hoopla is so NOT indictative of what most foks, even most Black ones, really think and feel about how Black men are treated by the criminal justice system. |
