Nottage has just been named a recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award. The Brooklyn-based artist talks about her work and what the award means for her future in the performing arts. Needless to say, the awards bestowed by the MacArthur foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by a super rich Chicago family, are much coveted. The money is given with no strings attached, and the recipients are chosen by a committee headed up one of the heirs of the family. Their goal is simply to reward excellence in the hope that a financial contribution will make it easier for geniuses to be geniuses.
