Nolan Fane had to fly to Brazil on Monday morning but he just emailed me asking that I post his review of Kola Boof at the Schomburg and a photo that he took of the event.
Kola did not take photos of the event, but the fans did.
Yo yall! I went to see Kola Boof at the Schomburg sunday and she was on point.
Who else was there? Speak up and come correct with sister's props.
If you weren't there here is my review:
It was a nice Harlem crowd and Kola came on stage in a sexy turquoise dress with the longest legs I have ever seen and sang an African song with an interpreter behind her it was just NICE. This white dude presented Kola with an award from Sweden and then she pointed out Derrick Bell in the crowd and told the audience about his work over the years and she dedicated her event to him. As you could imagine there was a huge applause for Derrick Bell and he kept talking to Kola from the audience during the reading.
It was powerful main. I mean POW-WO-FULL! She is totally "A QUEEN" inside out and she looked fine as hell just ask the brothers who went their opinion.
People was crying 'n shit. Kola was crying. Brothers was taking handwritten notes and talking to Kola straight from the audience. It was like an open discussion and shit. This bi-racial sister went up on stage crying and hugged and kissed Kola after some brothers in the front disagreed with the bi-racial chick about BET and hurt her feelings. Kola told people don't mess with the blond bi-racial girl because they don't understand her experience being bi-racial and should support her no matter what but it was a real "afrocentric" type of audience. Then some black women from the old school started praising Kola and talking about her books. Kola read some poems she wrote praising black men and main it was NICE! She can write some poetry and it was sharp the way she showed all the dimensions of brothers pain and how much she loves us it was flawless man. Every black man in there was pumping their fist and clapping.
She of course focused on colorism and everybody was on that issue the whole night but it was real good and it was all kinds of black folks telling their side. It was like a big family reunion and Kola was the mother. It was just nice.
Derrick Bell asked Kola to tell about how some black people in the industry fear what she has to say and try to keep her down. He asked her to read from some book but she didn't have the book with her, so they talked about the black press and some experiences with publishers and Derrick Bell and this other Professor dude asked her to talk about lies people are making up about her.
I just saw old girl "Urban" had a post on the other thread saying she was told there was no Kola Boof event being held at the Schomburg sunday so that proves Kola's not lying when she says people try to silence her work which the Professors were wanting Kola to talk about.
Some black women in the audience got upset and said that they won't let Kola Boof be silenced ever.
I got to see the security guards escort Sister Souljah backstage to meet Kola before the event began and I saw when Sister Souljah waved bye to Kola from the audience and left with her entourage.
I met Nafisa Goma and yes she really is a Arab lady and very nice looking too. 
I was going to try and locate brother Johnson (Troy Johnson) but Nafisa told me he didn't come and that Kola was devastated about that so whatever you do, she said, don't mention Troy to Kola and I didn't.
A gang of people got their books signed and took pictures on stage with Kola. Everybody in that whole place was hugging and kissing each other! You just felt so proud to be black because Kola made us feel that way.
A lot of people left after the signing, but Kola stayed on stage talking to people and signing books and then a gang of brothers that she was teasing around with hoisted her up in the air and carried her out into the lobby but she was laughing and loving it. It was great.
Like one of the brothers said we need to have more black women like Kola Boof, because she was amazing.

I went to see Kola on Sunday at the Schomberg. She has a beautiful singing voice and my husband also enjoyed her presentation. She is very entertaining and she really does love black Americans. I don't know why there is so much bitterness against her. |

Thanks.
Ms. Boof's event took place Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Langston Hughes auditorium but was not a part of the New York Public Library's exhibition platform. We only feature in-house programs on our blog.
I did enjoy working closely with Kola Boof on this project for most of the summer.
As literary projects go, it was one of our better received ones.
Ms. Boof's books continue to be available at the Schomburg Gift Shop. Ask for Bibi Uddin.

I will let Kola know that it was indeed you sitting in the front row with your hubby, she wasn't sure and didn't think about it until the next day.
She had apparently brought something to give you, but thought you didn't come. Kola had expected you to look older and "stereotypically West African" for some reason and said you were a very young attractive couple.
She mistook your husband for Hawaiian but later realized it could have been you two.

She did introduce herself to Kola, they hugged and Kola signed her book.
But she did not say "I am Dahomeyahosi" from aalbc.com, so Kola wasn't aware that she was from this board.
You forget that Kola has fans from the world of soap operas, feminist groups and many other boards.
There were four different women named Tonya who came to see Kola. There was a man who Kola suspected was "Grind", but he didn't say so.
It's not as though Kola knows what these people look like.

Well I'm 36 and my husband is 37 but I'm glad she thinks we look young. You know you can never tell an African woman's age. I didn't expect Kola to recognize me. I know she is very busy on the internet but I do look like a typical southern Beninese. We tend to have fat cheeks and narrow eyes like some of the Yorubas. This is our president.

Why would you expect kola to "recognize" you, Dahomie? You've never met her which is why it is so ridiculous that you passed up a chance to do so. Snort. And I can't believe that kola thought the man whose picture you've posted looked "Hawaiian". Just like how kola's outfit in the picture shown bears no resemblance to a turquois gown that "Noland Fane" claims she had on, and how "enchanted' accused me of calling the posts about the woman's group a "hoax". Dahomeyahosi did not remain anonymous Cynique. You're such a liar.
I've stated several times that Dahomeyahosi greeted Kola on stage, hugged her and got her books signed. They took photos together. She simply did not tell Kola that she was from AALBC.COM and Kola was not thinking about who was who until the next day, because there was a lot going on.
This goes to show what type of ogre you are and it shows your obsession with Kola Boof and tearing her down because as someone else pointed out, you don't have a life.
Dahomeyahosi did indeed meet with Kola, but gave her real name and was wrapped up in the subjects of the event just as Kola was.
I, like Kola, thought Dahomeyahosi was a young African American "girl" with a young Polynesian boyfriend. They are a very attractive couple and do look very young. I can see Kola's point about expecting a "stereotypical" West African woman, probably wider shaped and older in West African garb with a more stern faced Japanese husband wearing a "suit". Dahomeyahosi's hubby was young, handsome and he smiled a lot clapping from the audience. It did not register with Kola that this was them until the following day.

I was with Kola Boof in New York. I have been either with her or on the on cell phone with her for the better part of a week nonstop so I certainly know what I'm speaking of.
We have definitely discussed Dahomeyahosi as Kola had expected her to come backstage before the show.
My posts are not stupid, the ugliness of some of the people here is what's stupid.

JMHO,
Why don't you telephone the Supervisors of the Schomburg Center, since they've invited you all to do so, and ask them what Kola Boof was wearing.
Who knows what Nolan Fane was seeing from his portion of the audience? Perhaps the skirt and top looked like a dress to him. Could Mr. Fane, a post-40 year old have color blindness?
The photo that Mr. Fane sent us clearly shows Kola in a gray skirt with a crocodile print Teddy blouse, however, the photo is also quite blurry and the outfit looks different in person than it does in the picture.

What about the kola supporters? Why don't they step up? I'm issuing a special challenge to chrishayden to contact the people kola supplied phone numbers for and to let us know he was told about the event. I'm really surprised "enchanted" hasn't done this. Or Renata or Brown Beauty or Latina-Wi or - ABM. |

At least it's me that you've decided is stupid rather than Kola. Kola had no idea who I am and I didn't want to take up any more of her time than was necessary as I was in a line of people waiting to get her autograph.
I went there to hear her speak, not to reminisce (sp) about our board discussions that she is probably much too busy to remember.
We left as soon as I got her autograph because the traffic was horrible due to a parade in Harlem and we hadn't eaten since noon. By the way if anyone is ever in Harlem they should stop by Africa Kine restaurant on 116th street for some great Senegalese food with excellent American-style service.

I've been in New York the whole time--largely in Harlem--and this has passed completely over my head. I did a reading at Bowery Poetry Club the same night, on the 18th. Turnout was decent, though most of them were clueless hipsters who came to see some edgy "black" writer spew his venom. In Harlem, I heard or saw absolutely nothing about Kola, heard no one talking about it....where is all this baloney coming from?? |
