NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters) - The American media turned on Serena Williams on Wednesday, labelling the former world number one as "classless" and "graceless" after her sullen reaction to her U.S. Open exit at the hands of Justine Henin. Top seed Henin beat the American 7-6 6-1 in the quarter-finals for the third consecutive grand-slam event on Tuesday but a despondent Williams gave the Belgian scant praise. "I just think she made a lot of lucky shots and I made a lot of errors," Williams said at her news conference. "I really don't feel like talking about it. It's like I don't want to get fined. That's the only reason I came. I can't afford to pay the fines because I keep losing." Players who fail to appear for post-match news conferences face fines from tennis officials. Williams's words and manner were greeted with widespread disdain. "(Williams) met the media afterward like a rattlesnake meets a ground squirrel," wrote Bill Dwyer, in the Los Angeles Times. "If anybody was expecting perspective afterward, or maybe a gracious nod to a better effort by an opponent, forget it. We had sullen Serena. Snippy Serena. Snarly Serena." In the New York Times, under the headline, "Williams needs a lesson in etiquette", Selena Roberts wrote: "Who's classless now? "The grumpy, borderline nasty disposition that Williams displayed after her loss was a little jarring considering she had her own lack of preparation to blame for giving in so easily to Henin. "Serena was bitter, angry and upset. She directed some of that at Henin. Who could use charm school now?" In an interview with USA Network, which hosts television coverage of the U.S. Open, John Wertheim, the senior writer for Sports Illustrated magazine, described Serena's reaction as "stunning". "There's a lot to admire about Serena but this happens again and again where we just have these completely graceless post-match (news conferences). Lucky shots? I think she means winners." Onthebaseline.com, which specialises in women's tennis news, said Williams should probably have skipped the news conference. "Serena's public relations department would have done better to pay the fine themselves than to allow their charge to disgrace herself as she did last night," it said. Updated

to serena's credit she never gives props to anyone who beats her, except her sister. so what can you say? i do think she could have been a little more politically correct in her post match interview (henin's tapped that juicy azz of serena 3 times straight now) but, i guess it will be more of an insentive for henin to whoop that azz again when they meet. oh well, there's always venus. |

Tennis is the only sport that the athletes are expected to praise their opponents. It's ridiculous. When is the last time you heard Shaq praise an opposing center? As for the journalists trashing Serena, it is typical hypocritical back-stabbing. Sports writers are a cowardly bunch. |

Me, I've always felt that you can tell a lot about an athlete's character by the way they handle a defeat. If you get your ass kicked, you get your ass kicked. Give credit where credit is due, dispense with being a poor sport, and move on. One reason why I've never been a Tiger Woods fan is because he always made excuses when he lost instead of admitting he was outplayed. |

I'd agree Serena should be more gracious and HONEST about her loss. Losing to someone ONCE may be a fluke. But getting your tail kicked by someone 3 of 4 times means that mofo's got your number. However, Serena's been a famous person for about 10 years now. She's been interviewed COUNTLESS times after victories and defeats. Did it take all this time and 100's of professional matches to discover she's a poor loser? Or is this really nothing that being made into something by foks in the media who dislike and resent Serena (probably because she's NOT as slavishly dedicated to winning Grand Slam Tennis tournaments as they prefer she be). |

Abm-Serena has a winning record against Henin and just about every other woman tennis player, except for her sister. More often than not, the match is on Serena's racket. When she loses it is because she is out of condition, bored, overwrought or distracted. All her opponents have to do is wait for her to implode. Why give anyone credit for that? IMO, a professional athelete should be a sore loser. |

most male athletes give props to someone who has outplayed them, shaq gave props to hakeem oljuwan and to ben wallace, so i don't know what your yapping about roby ... she got that azz tapped plain and simple, and was being a brat about it. maybe her sister can get revenge though ... only one person has been able to beat both williams sister in a tournament, and that was only once. |

She really should have just taken the fine and skipped the press conference. But I do think the sports media just can't wait to jump on anything either of the Sisters do and blow it all out of proportion. |

"I just think she made a lot of lucky shots and I made a lot of errors," Williams said at her news conference. ^^^ What's wrong with what Serena said? She simply spoke the truth. Serena contributes to her own demise by showing up out of shape and distracted. Serena should have said "Justine is a slightly above average player who has benefited from me and my sister being away from the game." The commentators would have had a collective stroke. The media just wants Serena to bow down to her white competitors and praise them to the high heavens when she loses to them. Whenver Serena loses to a player that girl becomes famous. Note: Maria Sharapova. Serena Williams is the Muhammed Ali of the WTA. I don't recall "The Greatest" lauding his competitors, in fact just the opposite-he clowned them. |

The game-calling commentators like John McEnroe always struck me as being Venus and Serena fans. And the media always looks forward to a match between the sisters. And whether they like it or not, these 2 players are role models for black girls. Save the slamming your opponents for wrestling matches. Muhammd Ali belittled rivals because he was creating hype for his upcoming matches. Tennis has never put itself in a class with the blood and guts of boxing. IMO. |

"I just think she made a lot of lucky shots and I made a lot of errors" -SW Robynmarie: "What's wrong with what Serena said?" She simply spoke the truth." Moonsigns: In my opinion, she didn't speak the "truth", because that would suggest her opponent isn't as skilled of a tennis player. Which, obviously, she is. Her comments also made it apparent that she's having difficulty accepting she can't - and won't - win all the time.

Robynmarie, Henin is has won 4 of 6 matches she and Serena have played in the big GRANDSLAM (US Open, Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open) tournaments. You don't beat someone that MANY times in the most important, most highly prized and recognized tennis tournaments just via making "lucky shots" against them. Serena didn't have to praise and laud Henin. But when you lose in straight sets and in the last set you lose 6 games to 1 you have flatout gotten your a$$ kicked. Anybody who knows ANYTHING about tennis knows this to be true. Now, having said that, I still think that Serena has comported herself very well over the course of her career and this one moment of unsportsmanship should NOT be some permanent blemish on her otherwise admirable image. And I believe if Serena truly rededicates herself to tennis and, especially, her FITNESS, she'll likely again dominate Women's tennis. I think the problem a LOT of tennis media and fans (Yours Truly included) have with Serena is they see her has having the potential of being the very best female tennis player ever yet, alas, that does not appear to have been as important to her as it's has been to them. |

venus has never had a bad attitude (that was always serena)....and i still dont think henin is a better player than venus just because she beat her this time....while venus played really good tennis ive actually seen her play better than she played today. venus and serena just need to get back on it and get as serious about their games as they were when they first came on the set. and i agree that that was pretty classless for serena to act the way she did in that interview....eventhough i admire her...she turns my stomach sometimes by the way she can act. but i do notice this there was another player that venus beat in this very tournamet who had a very bad attitude after she lost when they went to interview her and no one mentioned a peep about the way she was acting. also no one made a big spectacle out of lindsey davenport kicking plaeyers bags and bumping into them after she lost to them. so this to me is a double standard....people might admire venus andf serena but they're alot of them are jsut waiting for them to act a fool. macenroe seems to be a true fan of theirs though.

McEnroe and the other tennis reporters hate the Williams sisters. They only grudingly admit their greatness and always downplay their historic accomphlishments and talk up their opponents who 100% of the time are white/European. Tennis may not put itself in the same league as boxing, but at least boxing is a diverse sport. Professional tennis is so racist it is unbelievable. Have you ever been to a pro tennis match? Some of what spectators say about the Williams sisters is truly ugly. U.S. Professional tennis treated Arthur Ashe horribly and Althea Gibson was persona non grata as far as the tennis world was concerned. Tennis in the U.S. is a country club affair that is still pissed the Williams sisters, two black girls from Compton, rocked their world. I am glad Serena talks smack. In a few months those same reporters who called her "classless" will be kissing her azz when she wins another title. As for Justine, not so fast. She hasn't won the title yet, she still has one more match. See what I mean about people getting excited when the Williams sisters lose? Besides, Justine cheats, but that's another story. It takes Richard Williams to really tell it like it is. |

Have you ever been to a pro tennis match? Some of what spectators say about the Williams sisters is truly ugly. ive never been to a pro match but i use to compete in tennis tournamets back when i was really seirous about tennis and i do know tennis is an extreemely racist sport...i went through so mcuh politics and cheating it was ridiculous...even with my own coaches who were suppose to be trying to help me...and the sad thing is it wasnt only the white coaches who gave me problems...i caught just as much hell from the black ones. there was only 1 really good coach that i had whow as genuine about helping me. USTA is very racist, especially in the juniors. that's why richard willaims didn't let his daughters go through the juniors.... i think its a little better when you start in the pros...i played at the semi-pro level for a little while and it was actually a little better. U.S. Professional tennis treated Arthur Ashe horribly and Althea Gibson was persona non grata as far as the tennis world was concerned. i completely agree Besides, Justine cheats, but that's another story. this is true too...even one of the commentators had to point out the fact that she looks up in the box to get coaching after every point she plays...youre not suppose to get coaching whiler youre on the court

The stadium where the U.S. Open is held is named after Arthur Ashe. And he and Althea Gibson date back to the last century. This is 2007. It's so easy to cry racism over every little perceived slight. If the audience was so biased they wouldn't applaud when Venus or Serena win the point after a volley. Venus and Serena don't kiss the ass of the white tennis establishment. Why should they expect the white tennis establishment to kiss their asses? People with class rise above all of this petty crap and let their game do the talking. The games of the Williams's sisters spoke. And both bytches lost. LMAO. |

cynique, as i said, the audience respects them and venus and serena have alot of white fans but you do have alot of people just waiting for them to act a fool. its the same as with black footballplayers and basketball players. they respect these players game but as soon as they act stupid a huge huge spectacle is made out of it. and please dont try to tell me that tennis isnt racist anymore especially when ive experienced it....again its why richard williams didnt let his daughters play the juniors which is probably why they've reached the level they are right now. as far as arthur ashe and althea gibson, agian its just like with muhammad ali now that theyre dead its easy to pay tribute to them but when they were young and whooping ass they caught tons of criticism. author ashe died in the 80s which wasnt all that long ago. |

in fact when venus and serena first came out white people went stone crazy saying nasty horrible things about them...i know because i trained at a tennis club back then and the only people who had anything positive to say about them were me and another black boy. even martina navratalova (who i at first thought was pretty liberal) was saying the only reason venus and serena recieve so many endorsements is because they're black and they were claiming the white players done get shit. ...the only difference is now they've gained a certain amount of respect because of how well they play. there was also one time where the entire crowd was booing them and some were shouting racial slurs |

I am not so naive as to think that racism doesn't exist on every level and in all areas of our society, Misty. At some point, if you're mature enough, you take it in your stride and allow it to energize you instead of reducing you to self pity. Every athlete has fans and detractors. Misty-you are spot on regarding the racism in professional tennis. Venus and Serena have a combined total of 15 Grand Slam titles, nearly seventy singles titles and many more doubles titles. I don't think they let the bias in tennis hold them back. Thank God they have a strong father in Richard Williams. I mentioned Arthur and Althea because professional tennis in the U.S. has a legacy of discrimination and racism towards players of color. Even today, out of hundreds of professional players there are only a handful of black Americans. I remember when Venus and Serena played at Indian Wells a few years ago. Venus bailed at the last minute in her match against Serena and the crowd booed Serena mercilessly the next day. They even yelled racial slurs at Venus as she sat in the audience. And this was in California. Not only are tennis reporters, tournament organizers and many tennis fans racist, professional tennis is extremely sexist too. It was not until this year that men and women got paid equal prize money-thanks in large part to the lobbying efforts of Venus Williams. It is like I always say, women's tennis needs the Williams sisters, more than the Williams sisters need professional tennis. |

Tennis is racist? So what else is new? It's also always been an elitist sport and the reason blacks don't go out for it in great numbers is because it's an expensive pursuit. Venus Williams walked off with one million big ones as the winner at Wimbelton. Pardon me if I don't dwell on her hardships and waste my sympathy on what she has to endure. Venus and Serena get as many accolades as pans and, yes, tennis does need the Williams sisters more than they need it. Why is this if they are such outcasts? They have the upper hand and if they can't stand the heat they should get out the kitchen. |

I don't follow tennis or the careers of Venus and Serena. I think they've had some great achievements, improved our opportunities to participate in professional sports and for Black women in general as they are a very positive influence. But tennis doesn't rely on one or two players. There will always be new players to fill the void left by someone who retired or dropped dead. And whenever the sisters leave tennis, they have other irons in the fire to keep them occupied. Neither tennis nor the Wms need each other.

maybe the reason serena CANNOT beat her top seeded peers, is because she has spent so much time under the "spell" of her JEW boy friend brett RATner. senera is just mad that she lost. period, i think she is also upset that venus (the truly beautiful sister) is taking her spot at the front of pro tennis (female). if serena wants to "cry" about this or that, than so be it. but she (serena) should not be "upset" about getting whooped by a BETTER player. hey serena, maybe the JEW that you date (amongst other things) can find a solution to your're LOSING WAYS. JEWS have the solution to everything. serena just ask the JEW who you screw to give you advice on how to beat these players you keep losing to. or maybe you are just "past your're prime". serena williams i only hope you NEVER win another grandslam (for that matter another tennis match). VENIS WILLIAMS is the beautiful, shining tennis star who should be supported. venus PLEASE find me amd marry me!!!!!!!!!!!! |
