NEW YORK (AP) - Star Jones Reynolds skirted questions about her dramatic weight loss for years, saying only that she had undergone a medical intervention. That intervention, it turns out, was gastric bypass surgery.
Reynolds, 45, says she was "intentionally evasive" when people asked how she'd dropped 160 pounds in three years. She had gastric bypass surgery in August 2003.
She writes about her weight loss in a first-person essay in the September issue of Glamour magazine, on newsstands Aug. 7.
"Everything about me was already so public (mostly my own doing - talk about dumb!), so of course everyone wanted to know what I had done," she writes. "I was also terrified someone would have a tragic result after emulating me without making an informed decision with her doctor."
"But the complete truth is, I was scared of what people might think of me," she continues. "I was afraid to be vulnerable, and ashamed at not being able to get myself under control without this procedure."
Keeping her decision private made her a hypocrite, she says, because she had been so outspoken about her firing as co-host of ABC's "The View" last year.
Reynolds, who weighed 307 pounds at her heaviest, says her "out-of-control behaviour" began around her 40th birthday in 2002. Feeling lonely, she turned to food for comfort and gained 75 pounds over the course of 17 months.
"I used to look in the mirror and take pride in my figure, but that was when I was legitimately a full-figured woman," she says. "I'd gradually gone from full-figured to morbidly obese."
Reynolds opted for surgery after a friend expressed concern about her weight. It was a success, she says, though she found she was "still consumed with the same anger, shame and insecurity as before."
Her husband, banker Al Reynolds, encouraged her to begin psychological therapy in the summer of 2005. She learned, among other things, that she "couldn't control what others thought," she says. She began to heal by talking openly about her weight loss to strangers.

This was common knowledge since one doesn't normally go from being a big fat slob to being anorexic without drastic measures. Star needs to come up with something new because she is getting really boring.

I've never been a fan of Star Jones. Frankly, I put her in that (bulging) category of celebrity for which fame is inexplicable.
But one moment I see her, she looks to be +300 lbs. The next time I see her she looks like a starving African.
Really, was there any doubt by anyone with 2 functioning eyes and a modestly functioning brain that that chick had some fairly RADICAL happen with and to her? |

Bro, this is so true. But what I never understood is why she lied and denied that she had the surgery. What was that all about? As if anyone could not figure out such an unnatural massive weight loss, in such a short period of time, was attributed to some form of surgery. Why did she initially play this her surgery down? Having gastric surgery for weight loss is a very common procedure. I personally know of six women who have had it (although you wouldn't know it if you looked at them now).
Star played this game to the end and initially never gave an honest answer. There is no shame in what she did. It would be as if I wore thick Coke bottle glasses all my life and then one day I didn't have them. When asked where were my glasses, my response would be, "Oh, I broke them. Gotta get a new pair". But I never do. Duhhhhh..???? When asked if I had some form of laser eye surgery, I would side step the question or lie. WTF? To be honest, she needs to gain a little weight back to fill in all that droopy hanging skin.

Though I'm no fan of hers, I can understand why Star and anyone else who's struggled with their weight might eventually resort to some fairly drastic measures. Especially when such foks make their living in front of cameras.
But, like you, I don't get why she lied or obfuscated the truth either. Hell. It's not like prying eyes wouldn't divine the truth.
And no sane person would believe she managed to drop the equivalent of an entire person from around her abdomen over just a month or so solely via exercise and eating Subway samiches. |

Understood. I feel the same way. As I stated before, I know of six women who have had such surgery. There are situation's in which such drastic measures are needed to address a drastic weight problem. I don't judge nor criticize people for seeking such procedures. But why lie?

Like you and everyone else, I never could figure that out. There is no shame in doing so. Why lie?? She played that game of tap dancing and stone walling for the longest. It makes no sense. She lost a lot of credibility with a lot of people by doing so.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Yep. Not doubt she did not exist on a diet of Subway samiches. I'm sure she could have lost a large amount of weight had she done so for about two years. But she didn't! She is a bright woman and a lawyer. Why did she think the public would believe her lies? And again, why lie..??????
