Just in case I find myself in a position where I can no longer afford to live in Harlem, NY. Where do you think is the best place for an American born Black person to live, and why? I've seen the various surveys in a couple of the magazines, but I was wondering what you folks thought. |

There's no correct answer since there are other considerations such as are you only seeking low-cost housing, are you doing a job transfer, do you like to golf, want to partake of nightlife, want to live in the country, near the ocean/mountains/forests, near a university, do you prefer temperate climates, do you want to be near friends/family, do you plan to retire there, etc. I suggest you determine three or four places that would be suitable for you, contact their local chambers of commerce to send you a newcomer's kit (some may charge for those) and once you have better determined your choice of a new spot, take a recon trip to check it out in person.

There's a slow boat leaving for the Ivory Coast in about a half an hour. |

If you're "downsizing" and you're a black man, Troy, the best you can do is to go somewhere with a temperate climate, and cross your fingers. |

Mzuri, I realize that there is no "correct" answer. It is a very personal question. The why part of the question was the most important aspect as it might tease out some aspect of the location I'd failed to consider, or that might not show up in a brochure. Right now, the South appeals to me most. Serenasailor, I’ve never been to Houston. I’m actually going there for the first time in September, for the Diva’s of Literature tour (http://www.divasofliterature.com). Las Vegas and Atlanta are interesting cities. What appeals to you about these cities. Nels, I may be on that boat one day. Cynique, I like temperate climate. I know quite a few people who rave about southern California, for the climate.

Florida, Palm Bay area, the cost of living is low, weather great! Take a vacation there and you won't want to leave. Just make sure you take along a couple of empty suitcases to bring back all of the bargains you'll find there! HA! But, of course the trade off of late is all of the hurricanes that rip through there. It didn't used to be that bad... |

Troy, consider moving to Toronto. Toronto has a diverse population, and many things to do. The people for the most part are friendly and the U.S. is easily accessible should you want to visit from time to time. There are also smaller cities along the Niagara peninsula to consider. The winters have been mild lately so no need to worry about huge snow storms, I think we maybe had one last winter. |

I've been thinking a lot about Panama. From all the research I have been doing so far it looks reallllll promising. I am a little worried about tropical storms however. |

Leaving the U.S. is a hassle because you still have to file/pay income taxes here no matter where you go. So you'll likely pay taxes here and there. Relinquishing your U.S. citizenship to avoid paying taxes is a hassle as well since you must pay a ginormous fee to the U.S. Govt in order to make that happen. Plus if you give up your U.S. citizenship to avoid taxes you can never enter the U.S. again as long as you live. And there are other considerations when moving to a foreign country such as property rights, etc. Moving out of the U.S. is not advisable.

Of course, it's a shithole! Why else would W.C. Handy write the St. Louis Blues? Because a girl of his treated him like dogshit?? The "gal with a heart like a rock" was Shitty St. Lues herself!! |

Thanks Mzuri I hadn't gotten that far in my research as far as the taxes go. I did however check in to the visa that is required. The price is not very high, but there is a lot more due in fees and the such. Never knew I could never return with the issuance of the visa though. |
