This conversation http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/28830.html made me think about Johnson's most recent contribution to our legacy... I heard Bob Johnson interviewed in The Steve Harvey Show yesterday morning (the folks at NPR were boring me at the time...). Kam Williams also interviewed Bob Johnson as well: http://reviews.aalbc.com/bob_johnson.htm. Bob started a film production company called Our Stories Films when I heard that I said to myself finally someone with the ability to green light a motion picture will do it an do us proud. I was happy and optimistic. Then Johnson revealed the title of the first Movie: "Who's Your Caddy" (under construction, pending review: http://reviews.aalbc.com/whos_your_caddy.htm). He proceeded to relate that all of the movies would be comedies (presumably of a similar bent). I was like whoa; these are NOT "Our Stories". People can spend their money anyway they like. However I could not help but be irritated and frustrated by the choice of movies. I mean come on, even with a Billion dollars can money be the your ONLY motivation.

I mean come on, even with a Billion dollars can money be the your ONLY motivation. (Obviously they did not do as good a job on your head at MIT as I thought. Have you EVER seen anybody who had enough money? No. Everybody wants more. He's young. looking for new worlds to conquer. And whenever you have to lay out a minimum of 20 million (the bottom price for a movie that will go into wide release--those of you who know about a fluke like Blair Witch Project please spare me) for a project at least breaking even has GOT to be your first consideration. I am not saying I will go see it. I probably won't. But isn't this what we wanted? Black capitalism? How are you going to make an omelet without breaking eggs? Hey, at least he ain't got his pants hanging down on his butt and selling crack, right?

I feel your pain but I can't believe that you were expecting something dignified. Bob Johnson is producing what appeals to the masses and that would be brainless comedy. He's not targeting the discerning Black intelligentsia. There's probably not much money to be made in that sector.

I hear where you're coming from, Mzuri. Conversely, Bob Johnson is in a position to be a trailblazer and go against the grain, rather than perpetuating and being a part of the problem. |

I read now that, after so much negative publicity, BET has changed the name of its new show from "Hot Ghetto Mess" to "We Can Do Better" because it feels this revised title "will highlight the show's real intent, which is to offer social commentary in a context that sparks dialogue, debate and, most importantly, change." Hummmmmm. |

Oh my. It doesn't seem as if Troy is aware of the Hot Ghetto Mess mess. Anyway, I flipped over to BET during a commercial break from Donny Deutsch just out of curiosity. We Have Got To Do Better was just plain awful. The host, Charlie Murphy aka Eddie Murphy Crackhead Looking Brother, was dressed in jeans and a tacky t-shirt. You would think that people could dress up to host a television show, especially one that talks about how we have got to do better. What a wasted opportunity to set the example. If anyone knows anyone at BET, please let them know that I am available for wardrobe consultations - my regular rates are very reasonable - only $2,500 per day plus expenses. I'll take Charlie to Wal-Mart/K-Mart and get him some Dockers and a dress shirt. Thanks. Back to HGM/We Have Got To Do Better - The whole show stinks and BET sucks. A barrel of monkeys could have come up with something better than that mess. BET needs to get their shit together in the worst way.

Ms. Cynique, I happen to see the show while over a friend's house (she recorded it) and it was pathetic. The show was thinly disguised under the ruse we gotta do better. That's bullshit. The entire show is just another notch in the belt for BET as the number one premiere disseminator and citadel of Coon culture. Charlie Murphy was weak and unconvincing. Sorry, but the boy looked like he had taken more than a few hits on a bong before he came out. MTV, VH1 and BET are propaganda organs and distribution channels for the most degrading and simple minded trash imaginable.

Troy - I'll start from the beginning. There's a website called HotGhettoMess (HGM) and they feature various pix that people send in. Pix are of Black people dressed in "ghetto" outfits going to the prom, crazy hair-dos, makeshift grills (teeth), and all sorts of ridiculous real life moments captured on film. HGM also has a DVD of different ghetto messes and it's available for sale at the HGM website. Anyway, I'm not privey to negotiations or who contacted whom but around January BET and HGM hooked up to develop a television series based on the pix, videos and scenarios featured at the HGM site. Over the past few weeks there was an uproar from the BET audience regarding the contents of the show, how Black people would be depicted, as well as the name of the show. And some major advertisers withdrew from the show. http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Jul11/0,4670,TVBETHotGhettoMess,00.html And so to mitigate BET changed the name of the show to We Got To Do Better. The series premiere aired the other night and in my opinion it was awful. But I'm not a film critic or anything, just a disinterested party. BTW, I am available to keep you abreast of current events. My fees are negotiable. Please contact my agent to schedule an appointment
