So proud of Kola.
MADONNA and her new son made the cover
of Sweden (Norway's) popular OTTAR magazine's
"African" edition,
**ALSO see Kola's name on the cover list
of topics!.....(continued)
...but Kola's feminist essay "I AM MY OWN DAUGHTER" was featured quite prominently!! and is causing quite a stir with feminists in Scandinavia.
This is not an "interview", it's an ESSAY....and Kola writes about "gentital mutilation", COLORISM,media portrayals of black women and violence against women in general.
Unfortunately, they showed a photo of Kola's home--probably to make her look like a RICH/UPPITY immigrant speaking from an ivory tower.
What people don't realize is that Kola has no money. It's her children's father who owns and provides this home.
...and the essay is still a HUGE HIT and black feminists all over Europe and Africa have been calling Kola to praise her for speaking out about the world's dismissal of black women and their humanity and their issues.
As an Arab woman, I am just so grateful to know so many brilliant, strong black women who I consider my sisters. Black women are so inspiring for all women!

XM-Radio did a "review" of Kola Boof's
upcoming novel "VIRGINS IN THE BEEHIVE":
OK, I'm going to start this review by just calling a spade a spade.
"VIRGINS IN THE BEEHIVE"...the story of three beautiful black girls who become superstars by forming a Hip Hop singing group...IS THE SHIT!
But a fair warning to those high brow Kola Boof literary fans who will be expecting the serious "literary novels" that you're used to reading by her ("Flesh and the Devil", "Long Train to the Redeeming Sin")--this ain't that type of book. She calls this one a "pop novel", a "departure" and "pure escapist fun".
I call the book FIERCE, because despite what Kola says in the reviewer's notes, she still brings up some very serious issues (the explosion of white women getting "butt implants" is covered in grim detail through blond bombshell Koko-Tee for instance), the only difference is that for this novel, she used the breezy back drop of hip hop, glam life and the bling bling set. Everybody's here--even the Joss Stone/Christina types "doing you know what for beats", LOL!
I loved the book's insistence that Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain was murdered and I loved the way the book salutes Cobain, Kurtis Blow, the Mary Jane Girls, Diana Ross and so many others--I also love how the characters featured in the book are obviously based on real life superstars.
Like I'm sure DESTINY MATTHEWS is really Buffie the Body and Kola Boof combined into one character, I'm sure JENNASET JONES, the stunning leading lady of the book, is really Whitney Houston (maybe with some Courtney Love traits) and I'm positive that the group's sensitive but gifted songwriter, DARLING NIKKI, is based on Alicia Keys (Every story in here is the bomb, but I loved Darling Nikki's story). Back to characters I think are based on celebrities. I'm not even going to name who the Super-••••• of the story "Athena Hornet" is supposed to be, but I do wish the book's sexy LEADING MAN, chocolate fine ass "too good to be true" STEVEN FRAME would come to life so I could rock his world. The way Kola writes, she makes you dream about that man! He's like a Spike Lee filmmaker in the book only he's SUPER FINE (in more ways than one--wink*). If they ever do a movie of this (which they really need to), then Idris Elba or Morris Chestnut should play STEVEN FRAME.
Which reminds me...the "sex" in this book is obscene!
Not since Sister Souljah's "THE COLDEST WINTER EVER" has there been a "street-lit" hip hop novel this exciting, this original and this DARING (in fact add some "bold" and some "no she didn't!" to the DARING part). This book is off the chain, and though I haven't been enthused by the various controversies surrounding Kola Boof's personal life the last few years, I have to give her props on writing "VIRGINS IN THE BEEHIVE"---it's a classic.

That photograph is by celebrated Canadian photographer Jeff Wall and is called Morning Cleaning. It was on exhibit at the Marian Goodman Gallery here in NYC.

This is an ESSAY written by Kola Boof, not an interview, and it was followed in "blue" by a biography of Kola in which they discussed the replica of the house.
Again, I am not Kola Boof. My name is Nafisa Goma, and I stated from the very beginning that this photo was used to take the bite out of Kola's piece on black women's plight on earth.

Nafisa and Tonya thanks for defending me, but please...let Mzuri say whatever she likes about me.
I'm sure Nafisa didn't mean any harm by reporting what she thought was the "essential" facts and not going into specifics and details.
The fact is, I would never allow my home photographed by the press and I did not...nor did I want any representation of my home involved.
As I confided to Nafisa, I felt that this was done to take away from the powerful essay I penned about black women's epic suffering from Africa to the Caribbean to the United States.
Editors in Sweden found out that I have a room from Jeff Wall's collection and took it upon themselves to dig up a photo of the "model" that was used for the design of my house, and yes, I have two statues--but mine are Maori Female Warriors and they're "puter" and "bronze". The walkway is MARBLE. Mine is even more stunning than the original photo thank you very much...and this IS a ranch with horses and a river.

XM-Radio did a "review" of Kola Boof's
upcoming novel "VIRGINS IN THE BEEHIVE":
OK, I'm going to start this review by just calling a spade a spade.
"VIRGINS IN THE BEEHIVE"...the story of three beautiful black girls who become superstars by forming a Hip Hop singing group...IS THE SHIT!
But a fair warning to those high brow Kola Boof literary fans who will be expecting the serious "literary novels" that you're used to reading by her ("Flesh and the Devil", "Long Train to the Redeeming Sin")--this ain't that type of book. She calls this one a "pop novel", a "departure" and "pure escapist fun".
I call the book FIERCE, because despite what Kola says in the reviewer's notes, she still brings up some very serious issues (the explosion of white women getting "butt implants" is covered in grim detail through blond bombshell Koko-Tee for instance), the only difference is that for this novel, she used the breezy back drop of hip hop, glam life and the bling bling set. Everybody's here--even the Joss Stone/Christina types "doing you know what for beats", LOL!
I loved the book's insistence that Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain was murdered and I loved the way the book salutes Cobain, Kurtis Blow, the Mary Jane Girls, Diana Ross and so many others--I also love how the characters featured in the book are obviously based on real life superstars.
Like I'm sure DESTINY MATTHEWS is really Buffie the Body and Kola Boof combined into one character, I'm sure JENNASET JONES, the stunning leading lady of the book, is really Whitney Houston (maybe with some Courtney Love traits) and I'm positive that the group's sensitive but gifted songwriter, DARLING NIKKI, is based on Alicia Keys (Every story in here is the bomb, but I loved Darling Nikki's story). Back to characters I think are based on celebrities. I'm not even going to name who the Super-••••• of the story "Athena Hornet" is supposed to be, but I do wish the book's sexy LEADING MAN, chocolate fine ass "too good to be true" STEVEN FRAME would come to life so I could rock his world. The way Kola writes, she makes you dream about that man! He's like a Spike Lee filmmaker in the book only he's SUPER FINE (in more ways than one--wink*). If they ever do a movie of this (which they really need to), then Idris Elba or Morris Chestnut should play STEVEN FRAME.
Which reminds me...the "sex" in this book is obscene!
Not since Sister Souljah's "THE COLDEST WINTER EVER" has there been a "street-lit" hip hop novel this exciting, this original and this DARING (in fact add some "bold" and some "no she didn't!" to the DARING part). This book is off the chain, and though I haven't been enthused by the various controversies surrounding Kola Boof's personal life the last few years, I have to give her props on writing "VIRGINS IN THE BEEHIVE"---it's a classic.

Why in the world would Kola or anybody, for that matter, sign off on and APPROVE an article that's aimed to make her look bad?
As an editor, Nafisa, you really ought to familiarize yourself with copyright law.
Number three, Kola herself stated that she'd never allow her home to be photographed. And I quote,"The fact is, I would never allow my home photographed by the press and I did not...nor did I want any representation of my home involved."
Therefore, all the magazine had to go by was her "word" that she had a replica room designed in her residence based on the photograph. That's really fishy. Why would she even MENTION having a replica room in her residence based on the photo if she didn't want "any representation" of her home made public? Further, why would she APPROVE an article PRIOR TO GOING TO PRESS, in accordance with copyright LAW, mind you, if she didn't want "any representation of my home involved"?
I do not read/speak Swedish. However, I do know that Ottar, or any other periodical, could NOT publish that based on her word alone - without including some sort of disclaimer. Would you kindly indicate where the article states "Ms. Boof claims," or "Ms. Boof alleges," or words to that affect, that she has a replica room of the photograph in her residence. Otherwise, Ottar is guilty of publishing unverified information based on hearsay. Unless Ottar is a "rag" a la The National Enquirer, which is purely for entertainment purposes and not to be taken seriously, they cannot publish such UNVERIFIED details as fact. And even then, Kola would have had to reveal details about the room. Otherwise, how would Ottar have known about it? Keep in mind, she doesn't want "any representation of my home involved." Her words. Not mine. Or as Kola would say, "mines."
Number four, I notice you, like Kola, are quick to play the "jealousy card" anytime you're confronted with the truth. "Jealous," "envious," "jealousy," and "envy" are such broad, sweeping generalizations. Would you be a dear and kindly enlighten me SPECIFICALLY what it is about Kola that I'm supposedly jealous of? As an editor, Nafisa, you do realize it's your job to be specific, no?
Many on this forum are of the opinion that Nafisa Goma and Kola Boof are one and the same. It's painfully obvious why they'd think that.

All contributing writers MUST be given a PROOF COPY PRIOR TO the magazine going to press. Just as in book publishing, these proofs allow the author to check for accuracy, and make a few last minute minor changes if necessary. THAT IS A FACT. The writers are also given complimentary copies once the magazine is published.
If this board, as you say, is full of people who have been in magazines and were not shown advance copies of their articles regardless of what the law is, then by your own statment the magazine publishers BROKE THE LAW. Your participating in such illegal activities does not help your case. If I were you, I'd STFU before I incriminate myself.
Further, considering the way you, Enchanted, habitually omit words, your abundant typos, noun-verb disagreements, tense confusion, gerund-dropping, run-on sentences, and inproperly placed or omitted punctuation, I find it extremely difficult to believe that your semi-literate ass works or has ever worked in anything literary.

It is NOT the writer's job TO REQUEST a proof copy. It is the responsibility of the editor/publisher to see to it that the writer receives said proof copy. That's the only way the editor/publisher can cover their ass, so the writer can't come back at a later date and say they never authorized the final text for publication. Got it?
As someone who "worked on several magazines and for several publishers," you should KNOW this.
Y'know, I'm feeling generous. I've run my errands for the day, I have the day off, and I'm sitting in my air-conditioned bedroom just chillaxin. U.S. - It's not even worthy of a reply. Discombobulated can't even string a coherent thought and only comes around to defend others by insulting the opposition. She ain't nothing but somebody's sock puppet. I won't name names but I have my suspicions.
As to either of us being jealous of Kola Spoof, that's a really lame counter-allegation. It's a weak attempt to turn the tables and cast blame on others, as Kola's known to do whenever she runs out of lies and BS. If I didn't know better I wouldn't believe that a grown person would try to front their home from a glossy, and then backtrack about it being a "replica." Even more mind-boggling than all of that is why wouldn't she snag a pic from something obscure - like someone's interior decorating site - instead of using a world renowned photograph.
BTW, Kola's an expert at snagging pix off the internet.

Tonya, you need to get a serious grip on reality. Everything you post on this board is subject to approval or disdain. THERE ARE NO SACRED COWS HERE! Here's a synopsis.
Nafishy/Kola posted scans of a magazine and said of the interior pix "they showed a photo of Kola's home" and "it's her children's father who owns and provides this home" but U.S. recognized this as a world renowned photograph that had been featured at an art museum and busted Kola out. And typical lying Kola tried to play it off and say that she has an exact replica of the room that was depicted in the photograph and that she never said that was really the inside of her house.
Then you had the little brainwashed sheeple ogling the interior and believing that it was really real. Poor sheeple.
And of course, U.S. and I are "jealous" of Kola because she has no money and lives in an imaginary house.

Enchanted, you raised a serious point and it deserves a serious response.
From my perspective, Kola makes women of color, especially Black women, look bad. Women period, women of color especially, must work our fingers to the bone to achieve anything meaningful in life, and make our mark in this world. It seems to me that Kola wants to leave her mark in this world. Go 'head wit' yo bad self, Kola! I ain't mad at cha for voicing your perspective, wanting recognition, fame, fortune, accolades, wanting your name in lights, but, BUT do it right. Don't show your ass, show your breasts, fabricate, exaggerate, and flat-out lie. Because when Kola does that, she makes ALL woman of color, especially Black women, look bad.
I'm no saint - boy, is that the understatement of the millenium, but there are certain things that I just won't do to get ahead in life - no matter how bad I want to be on top. If that means I won't go as far as the woman who IS willing to do anything and everything to get ahead, so be it. I do have a conscience. I do have a sense of right and wrong. I do have my morals, scruples, values, and principles.
I also accept responsibility for my actions and know that when the world looks at me, they are judging EVERY woman, especially women of color, based on my actions. It's unfair, I know, but that's the way it is, the way it's always been and probably will always be.
Women of color, Black women especially, do not have the luxury to think "it's all about me." By having such a narcissistic attitude and displaying hedonistic behavior, as a woman of color you've just slammed the door on the next generation of all women, women of color, and Black women in particular. You've just set the achievements of woman back 10 generations, and made it that much more difficult for the up-and-coming generation of women who want to rise to the top.
Kola considers herself as "womanist," as such she should be uplifting women, not degrading us with her antics, her lies, and her deceit. If you take away Kola's antics, lies, deceit, and shameless over-the-top self-promotion, really, what do you have left? This is a woman who's trying to make her mark - I give her mad props for her initiative - but DO IT RIGHT - for herself, for you, for me, for our daughters. Carry on the mighty, selfless legacy of great woman of color who've gone before us and paved the way for us. Speak for the mute; give a voice to those who have been silenced. Do it right! |

Get it straight Ntfs_encryption. My request to mzuri was not in any way backing down from a fight like you suggested. The wrangling that takes place on this board is fun every now and then, but that is NOT what this board is supposed to be ALL about, not all day every single day of the goddamn week. But that's exactly what's been going on lately and it has taken this board to an all time low. I have never seen it this fucked up before. For the last week or more, not one thread has been filled other than the ones where fights are in process. To me that says it's time to change directions…for the sake of the people who actually come here to learn and share ideas and to discuss matters that really mean something. Urban_scribe, Kola Boof is scheduled to come to New York City for a reading on Sunday Sept. 16th (more details will be posted later this month).
Perhaps you should be woman enough to attend the event and (during the Q&A) session, explain your "American" feelings and opinions about her image to Kola IN PERSON.
In fact, you should bring a few other of your women friends with you.
I'm glad that some American women like Angela Davis, Marita Golden, bell hooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Halle Berry and Alice Walker DO NOT feel this way about Kola and her image.
I'm also glad that unlike you, they've actually read her books and take into account Kola's life history and her background.
As a woman, I personally feel more respect for Kola's bare African breasts than I do for Mary J. Blige and Beyonce's blond hair weaves and fake eyes, and I don't get the same message from Kola's nudity that I do from their music videos.
Also note that Kola Boof doesn't allow people to refer to her as "woman of color"---she's a black woman. Guess you missed the autobiography, which would have explained so much and in so much detail for you.
Nonetheless, I think it would be marvelous to see you and others like you face down Kola Boof in person with your comments and opinions.
There will be other African-born and Arab women (Kola supporters) there as well.
Incidentally, it should be noted that Kola doesn't consider you "black", as according to her, you're quite mixed and not even half black.
Kola's been attacked and disrespected by many Black American women, but then, so were Zora Neale Hurston and Josephine Baker during the very apex of their careers. In fact, it wasn't until after Zora died that Black American women embraced and accepted her message--they complained in the 1930's/1940's that she was "A BIG LIAR", "crazy", "country-talk'n", "cursed like a sailor", "loud and rude", "obnoxious", "unmarried",
"traveled in cars with men alone across the country", "bossy" and "too smart for her own good".
There's a famous photo of Zora Hurston measuring the sizes of black folks foreheads in Harlem that a famous black woman scholar signed and sent to Kola Boof.
It would be...so nice if some of you Black American women in publishing were WOMEN ENOUGH to come and make these sentiments heard to Kola's face.
I can guarantee that once in front of Kola's face, you'll be met with love and truth.

Actually, Urban_scribe is right.
Kola is not the violent type unless really provoked and she's much more likely to jump on a MAN and fight than another female.
I think Linda Duggins at Warner Books, not sure (isn't that your company Urban?) will tell you that Kola Boof is more likely to burst into tears and tell you her story than be violent towards another female in public.
At heart, she really is a believer in "sisterhood".
But of course there's that very famous incident from "SISTER 2 SISTER" magazine where Kola water-hosed that van load of white women that tried to picket her home over IR relationship comments...and Kola CAN fight.
People are usually shocked at how sweet and warm she is when they actually meet her.
Kola's extremely misunderstood on the one hand, but then Stephen Elliott at NEWSWEEK didn't call her the "Diana Ross of the publishing biz" for nothing, that's true too. She is ferociously ambitious.

For example, one notoriously ignorant hysterical poster on this board made some very vicious ugly comments about another posters family members. I thought the poster would rip the offender apart. Instead, the poster displayed maturity and intelligence by ignoring the totally unwarranted and indefensible comments. You can do the same!

Just because you are enamoured of her and her egomania, doesn't mean everybody has to be. Those caught up in the idea of comparing kola boof to Zora Neale Thurston should be aware that Zora sold her soul to Charlotte Mason the white patron who controlled her career for years. One thing Kola and Zora would seem to have in common; they both lied about many aspects of their lives. I do, however, like Zora's style of writing. I've never read anything kola has written so I can't speak on that subject. |

(5) because they haven't researched the plot or any other key elements of your story, (setting, character arc, subplots) they can't "shoot from the hip" and spontaneously and convincingly and passionately and eloquently and knowledgably discuss the story. (6) any agent, any editor, any publisher, any reviewer, any literary critic with as little as 5 years industry expertise would know the right questions to ask and would know within minutes that this person did not write the story. (7) stolen ms slips through the crack and is accepted for publication after all, it's now time for the writer to make editor requested revisions. How in the hell is a person who stole an unpublished ms going to do these revisions? Odds are that person can't write to begin with. (8) stolen ms makes it all the way to publication. The rightful author reads the book and realizes their story has been stolen. The rightful author has all notes, first, second, third drafts in their possession, is well-versed in all major and minor details as well as finer points, symbology, imagery, and so forth of the story. There is no doubt that this person is the actual writer of this book. The person who stole the story must now repay their advance, all royalties, all monies received from the sale of any and all subsidiary rights, punitive damages to the rightful author, becomes a laughing stock in the industry and nothing short of selling their soul to the devil will ever get them published again, and could face criminal charges.
Bottom line: a stolen unpublished ms is worthless to everyone except its creator. Worrying about having your unpublished ms, or the concept of your unpublished ms stolen is as preposterous as establishing a "poor man's copyright."
It never ceases to amaze my how very little so many so-called and wannabe writers know about the publishing industry. It's sad, really. Logic dictates that anyone considering any profession would first take the time, and give a damn enough, to learn the ins and outs and nuances of their proposed trade. Do a bit of research on the history of the industry; find out who's who and what's what. Learn industry lingo and terminology. But, no, they just want to jump in a write a book without knowing a damn thing about how publishing works. Sad.
Editors suffer most for the laziness and lack of knowledge of wannabe writers. Editors must take the time and hold these would-be writers' hands and guide them step-by-step through the publishing process, and eradicate all of the myths, urban legends, falsehoods, and misinformation they learned about publishing along the way. Editors have to erase everything these so-called writers THINK they know about publishing and start from scratch.
I acquired my most recent ms from a first time author two weeks ago. Every single day this woman e-mails me with an asinine question about publishing; questions that as a serious writer who gives a shit about her craft and the industry she's chosen, she should already know the answers to. It's frustrating. It's infuriating. It's sad.
This is the reason so many artists get jerked in the entertainment industry. (BTW, she didn't even know that writing/publishing is part of the entertainment industry). These artists don't take the time to learn the business end of the entertainment industry as a whole, and their sector of the industry in particular. As a result, they end up dying penniless.
Today's Lesson Summary: There Isn't a Phukin Thing Anyone Can Do With a Stolen Unpublished Manuscript!
Tomorrow's Lesson: The Poorman's Copyright is Bullshit!

Urban_scribe, I'm just curious. I'm not being funny either, but your posts always sound so harsh! Why is this? You have a wealth of knowledge to share on this board and I wish that there had been someone like you on this board a few years back when I was doing my research on how to get published. But I have to tell you, even after all of the research I did on the net and all of the books I bought or checked out at the library, I still had questions.
My editor is very good, and also very nice. I respect her and her time, and have always respected the fact that my ms is not the only one that she has acquired and that she a is very, very, busy person. But she has always invited me to call or email her with any questions I might have. When I first signed the contract, I had a million questions, but I am fortunate enough to have a very good agent as well, and she fielded most of them.
I think every new writer has fears of having someone steal thier ideas or ms, and you're right, every new writer should do as much research as possible before ever submitting the first query letter. But there is also a wealth of misinformation out there that first-time writers must navigate through, as well as facing the reality that the odds of being traditionally published are very slim. Like one or two out of one hundred. Not to mention the fact that they most likely will have to understand that not everone is going to like what they wrote, so now they have to process what all these rejection letters really mean. Am I a lousy writer? Is my story no good? Should I even try to continue my quest for publication? I don't care how much a writer reads and tries to prepare, nothing can deflate your ego like that first rejection letter.(I have really been blessed to only have received one rejection letter when I was queryig agents, and a few after from some of the major houses once I got an agent)
So with the odds stacked so high against them my question to you then becomes do you have to add to this frustrating process by being so harsh as you share your many years of experience? |

U.S. - You are great for sharing your insights. I think Renata just doesn't want to reveal her plotline, not sure if she has a manuscript but I don't blame her for being protective of an original idea. And I certainly don't blame anyone for not posting an original book concept on a public forum.
I can relate to your annoyance regarding the questions of your newbie. I'm sure that serious, well thought out questions wouldn't bother you. What irks is the thoughtless trivial questions that she could have obtained the answer to herself with a bit of research and common sense. You should nip those in the bud from the very beginning lest she bothers you everyday for the next six months.
Have to laugh at the poor man's copyright. I have a friend who actually does this, mailing things to herself. Last time I registered a copyright it was $20 - I think it's $40 now - and I don't see why people don't just register their copyrights with the LOC. It's as if they have an aversion to completing a simple form and parting with a nominal fee to protect their million dollar project

This is a not very well known angel. If someone else writes up something faster than I do about this particular angel, even with a different plot line, I'll be coming in second with it and my using the same angel in my book will almost make me look like a copycat. The plotline I'm not so concerned about, even though this angel is central to this plotline since he's the patron angel of the subject matter. The angel's name isn't copyrighted, so anyone can write about him. I will go so far as to say it ISN'T Raguel, Zadkiel, or Jophiel.
Seriously, think about it. If someone were to write a really good book about Jophiel, I'd look really silly writing a second book about the same angel, especially if the first one does well. |

We need say in Zora Hurston defense that she only lied to advance her career now its true she lied a lot but she was totally different animal from other black women writers of that time she was very separatist and controversial she spoke against integration and blacks marrying whites and remember her famous play "Colorstruck" caused many black writers to stop talking to her and black community almost never forgave her? so even though Zora was notorious for lies on top of lies she was in desperate situation to have her books published and her writing was very "in your face" considering its the 1930s its true black women did not embrace her because she was considered so backwards an countryfied but she is now known as the writer who wrote the "secret thoughts" and feelings of most blck women were too afraid to say aloud and black women back then couldnt understand feminism which was a big part of "There Eyes Were Watching God". |

A_woman, my posts on how REAL publishing works are intentionally harsh to drive home a point. I don't believe in babysitting adults. I do believe in giving the industry lowdown to people straight, without the bs sugarcoating. Remember, writing/publishing is part of the entertainment industry. To have any chance at making it in this business, you must have thick skin.
There's beaucoup competition in this industry. That competition is beyond fierce - it's ruthless. Rejection is a major part of the process. Did you know 90% of the time when an ms is rejected, it's not rejected by an editor/agent? It's rejected by what's known as a "first reader." First readers are usually college interns majoring in English, or graduate students working on their MFA's, or, sometimes, editorial assistants earning $45K a year. They know what their editor likes and dislikes, they know other projects in the works (whether an ms plucked from the slushpile is too similar to another already on the publishing calendar - automatic rejection). Typo on the first five pages - automatic rejection. Manuscript not properly formatted - automatic rejection. Cover letter addressed "Dear Editor" - automatic rejection. Editor's name misspelled - automatic rejection. Submission guidelines not followed exactly - automatic rejection. Not indicating your genre in your cover letter - automatic rejection. Not indicating total approx word count of your ms - automatic rejection. Including copyright symbol or copyright info (Copyright 2005 by Jane Doe) anywhere on your submission - automatic rejection. All of this and more, often before your story is even read!
I'll let you in on another secret: Once an editor acquires an ms, we're required to tell our authors, "Feel free to contact me if you have any questions," or words to that effect. But, really, we hope you don't. Editors are well aware that many writers, especially first time authors or those with a few books under their belts, have many misconceptions and delusions about the industry. While we are here to help guide writers through the process, answer questions, address concerns, disspell myths, delusions, and misconceptions, we also expect writers to exercise good judgment, research the small stuff, and use common sense. When writers don't exercise good judgment or apply common sense by asking basic questions about publishing that can be easily and accurately researched - we don't forget you, and we talk about you.
The publishing industry is a close-knit community. Here in the States, the main publishing action is in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Editors, more than any other publishing industry professionals, hop around from house to house most. Never piss off an editor. Because that editor you pissed off at a NY house in 2001, will turn up at the Chicago house you've just submitted your ms to in 2008 - and they will remember you.
The thing that pisses editors off most are writers and would-be writers who haven't taken the time to learn publishing basics. Send us the big questions; answers to which we don't expect writers to know or easily and accurately research. |

Renata, this is the last publishing misconception I can clear up today because I really must get back to work.
If you live in the States, your work is AUTOMATICALLY copyrighted from the MOMENT you create it, and until 70 years AFTER your death. After which, unless a registered copyright is renewed, the work becomes public domain. This is why editors get pissed when writers tell us they've copyrighted their work - we know we're dealing with a clueless amateur. That is an industry basic that EVERY hopeful writer should know. This also explains why the "poorman's copyright" is pointless. You're copyrighting work that's already copyrighted! Now registering the copyright is another matter, and really isn't something writers ought to do. That is a publishing responsibility. Writers registering their copyright BEFORE their ms is acquired for publication is, well, stupid. |

Thanks for the inside inside info, Urban_scribe. My agent hipped me to a lot about editors, so I rarely contact her. You are right about writers having to have VERY THICK SKIN! I'm sure aspiring writers will appreciate all of the info you post!

If, and that's a GIGANTIC if, someone were to steal your UNPUBLISHED manuscript the reality is it would be harder for them to have it published than you. Such marvelous paranoia. An unpublished manuscript is worthless.

No word yet on whether she'll acquire it, but at least she's giving it a read.

The same goes for YOU! You put yourself in the MIDDLE of the ongoing feud between Cynique and myself for NO REASON other than you "like" cynique. I NEVER POSTED ONE WORD to you until you attacked ME! Well, A-Hole. I have come to the defense of a number of posters here. Maybe I'm wrong for that but I'm not going to let some childish dimwits sit up here and cast insults against people for no good reason. Especially when there are people here who actually make sense when they post, and they are challenged and derided by others who clearly lack good judgment and intelligence. I didn't stand by when Kola did it, and I won't let anyone else do it. If I see that someone is casting unwarranted insults against someone who is simply expressing their opinions, I will butt in, so you'd better do it while my ass is asleep.
And no you don't just cast insults in defense of yourself. You come onto threads to instigate or cheer someone else on, but you always choose the losing side. If you've ever read my posts, I actually try to be helpful. But it's hard here, trust me.
As to you and Cynique and the book deal  , thanks for sharing but I already know all about that as I am the unofficial Thumpers historian. So what, she sent you her book and you didn't like it.  Half my book collection consists of books that could have been better written. Go be a book critic and shut  the fukc up.
Regarding your accusations about me starting entire threads to ••••• and complain - that is not true, because there really isn't anything to complain about here. I have started a couple of threads against Kola after she got busted for posting her incessant lies and bullshit. And that's to expose her for the fraud that she is in case any of you sheeple bitches missed it. It's not that I don't like Kola, the fact is that she is a confirmed liar and a fraud. Now, perhaps, Kola's supporters will FINALLY understand why some of us feel the way we do about Kola.

Well, isn't that what all of Kola's supporters do whenever someone speaks against Kola? Yet, none of them bother to consider that Kola has attacked SEVERAL people here, mainly those who reveal themselves to be light-skinned, multiracial and/or biracial, and that's the REAL reason many dislike her. But Kola's supporters don't seem to get this. According to them, we're all going stark raving mad with envy for Kola.
I read the arguments you and Cynique and Mzuri and Renata and Tonya and Enchanted (who many claim is actually Kola using one of her sock puppet accounts) get into. I figured some shit went down long before I came aboard - and it's got nothing to do with me. So I just stay out of it and let you ladies go at it till y'all bore of it. If someone mentions my screen name, I'll jump in and state my position. Or, as we saw in another thread a couple of days ago, if someone posts something that I feel crosses the line, I'll speak up and try to appeal to that person's sensibilities while still attempting to remain neutral cuz the shit ain't got nothing to do with me.
Madame Cynique is cool like that with me, but if you and she have your differences - it is what it is. I wish Kola's supporters would grasp this concept rather than resorting to the baseless old standby, jealousy.

That's just not true. You didn't have anything negative to say about the chapter I sent you except that it was a bit dark. Now WHY on EARTH would I get mad about your honest opinion? I have had many people read my entire novel before it was agented, bought, or sold, and do you think every single person "innundated" me with encouragment??? I didn't get angry with ANY of those people who didn't offer oodles of encouragement, so why would the same from you make me angry and nurse anything? I do not think or expect everyone to love my book. There is not a book that has been written that everybody loves! I wouldn't even set myself up like that!
If I sent you a chapter to read, I expected your HONEST feedback. So, why would I get mad? you're wrong about that. |
