Cosby Lends Star Power to Fight on ViolenceCosby Led Anti-Violence March Through West Philadelphia

June 4, 2007 - Never one to sit around when he sees a problem that bothers him, comedian actor Bill Cosby put the smiling, lovable personality we grew to love on the shelf to once again, deliver some tough love. He's angry with the runaway violence in the black community and what he was doing tonight is the equivalent of taking people to the woodshed.
"We let it go too long ladies and gentlemen and this is not the place to leave it," Cosby told the crowd at the Sharon Baptist Church in Wynnfield Heights.
At the risk of once again stirring controversy along the way, Bill Cosby was not sugarcoating his message about what he sees as the problem with Philadelphia's runaway gun violence. First, about all those guns in the neighborhood.
Cosby said, "Why are we allowing our children to put their hands on them? Hello!"
Whether in speeches in Wynnfield Heights or marching with anti-violence crusaders in West Philadelphia, Cosby talked at length about what he sees as a major contributor to the problem. "It's the fact that you haven't taught your child. This is not the way to settle something. You (got to) teach your young boys what manhood is," said Cosby.
Call it tough love. Call him outspoken. But people here say no one has challenged the African American community on the issue of black-on-black crime like Cosby.
Cosby went on saying, "Why should the drug dealer be the king of our neighborhood? Why should we say that he is a good person because he gave us a damn turkey?"
Cosby was urging his audience to begin a revolution. A revolution of change in their neighborhood, their streets, their homes. "Black people are very very wise and they're smart. Black people get together and they win when they get together," said Cosby.
Cosby knows it will be tough to make people listen, but he's not going to go away quietly. He plans to be out there again and again in the weeks and months ahead, trying to make others angry about what's going on and indeed start a revolution for change.

Good! Glad to see Mr. Cosby take lead and step out front in protest against the massive epidemic of senseless violence that has an iron grip on black communities across America. Unfortunately, I'm still in Ohio and the street violence and cowardly drive by death toll continues to mount in the inner city I grew up in. Needless to say, the current coon culture of wanton violence and death did not exist when I grew up here as a child. It's sad.
The black people I talk to shake their heads with disgust and frustration at the toxic thugs gone wild. Yet self serving Negroes will whine and moan about a black man who confronts a culture of self-destructive behavior and takes the initiative to make an effort to protest black on black violence. How pathetic….

"Thug Culture" is really just the old Southern black "sharecropper culture" updated for the 21st Century. ...As far back as the 1910s, urban black neighborhoods in the Deep South were often extremely violent, with the highest crime rates, the highest infant mortality rates, the highest rates of venereal disease(especially syphilis), etc. But even in New York City of about 1900, the main black neighborhood was known as San Juan Hill, mainly because the homicide rate there was so high. The famous Harlem stride pianist James P. Johnson once remarked that in one of these West Side Manhattan neighborhoods, which were both black and Irish, the homicide rate was at least three a night.
I think we are seeing a reversion back to a very old, archaic and dangerous black urban hustler culture (think Stagger Lee) that should have remained dead eighty/ninety years ago. |

The black thug culture also has its counterpart in the white "red neck" culture. I don't think anybody is naive enough to think that the violent element among society's underworld is something new. But that doesn't mean efforts should not be made to try and stop black youths from killing each other. |

I see….Well, it’s like this SS, the Jason Whitlock’s, the Coz’s and Larry Elders are not selling crack and smack to our children nor are they doing drive by’s and shooting three year old girls through the head (happened two weeks ago), brutally beating down other black men for perceived acts of disrespect, impregnating multiple women and not supporting their children, performing quadruple murders of gang rivals with gun shots to the back of the head (happened in January), consistently referring to black women (and all women for that matter) publicly as bitches, skanks, hoochies and ho’s nor or any of them making black communities across America physically unsafe because of possible direct and indirect violence. DID YOU EVER CONSIDER THIS?
Perhaps you may reconsider wagging your “rusty finger” elsewhere. Like in the direction of the individuals who perpetrate all the aforementioned pathology. They are the ones who are dragging down the quality of life for black Americans –not Cosby, Whitlock or Elder!!!! Got it...??!!

I'm not for letting the Black community off the hook. But I'm not for blaming the young and poor for all this madness either. Truth is the kids DID NOT teach themselves how to kill each other. But blaming them allows us to avoid asking:
"what was so messed up about earlier generations to make this one this way?" We’d rather skirt the truth and manipulate the facts and make our children take the heat, just so we can live with ourselves. *Ironic* But the majority of these kids were victims of BAD PARENTING. They weren‘t ALL caught in the crossfire.

Actually, ChrisHayden, it's a combination of BOTH inner-city culture and the violent post-reconstruction culture of the South after 1865. Inner-city Memphis, New Orleans, Birmingham, etc., were largely populated by poor black migrants from the rural towns who brought a violent culture forged in oppression with them. Sharecroppers often drank, fought, killed, battered wives, children and husbands, had an extremely high rate of out-of-wedlock births, etc., etc. They rubbed elbows with poor whites, who already had a fucked-up, violent urban culture of their own.

Actually NTFS Bill Cosby is a rapist, drug-addict, and has gotten multiple women pregnant, and a "bad" father.
Jason Whitlock is a sexist, lyer, and I am beginning to think a "closeted" homosexual.
Larry Elder is a lyer, opportunist who is shamelessly submissive to his White Neo-con counterparts and his also a protege of Clarence Thomas who us supposedly hate so much.
Now my question is because these ppl are multi-millionaires we should overlook there wrongdoings but anybody who doesn't drive a Rolls Royce, make $150,000.00 a year, lives in Malibu, and happens to be Black these things are unacceptable?

Yes, this is true. As bizarre and unacceptable as it is to you, the blacks I spoke to were tired of seeing so many young and innocent lives being wasted. Just last night, a young black man was being held in country jail and was charged with murder today after another young black man who he shot (they were arguing over a parking spot) this past Sunday, died last night. What a waste. Why does this unnecessary and senseless violent criminal behavior repeat itself in black America over and over every single day? And yes, I know you are bewildered, insulted and indignant that there are blacks who have the nerve to bemoan and detest this senseless violence in their communities.
