Oprah Tells Howard Grads Not to Be 'Slaves' to 'Selling Out,' Addresses Black Youth Sunday , May 13, 2007 Associated Press WASHINGTON The hope of her grandmother, a servant in 1950s Mississippi, was that the young Oprah Winfrey would "get some good white folks" to work for, the star talk-show host recalled Saturday. "I regret that she didn't live past 1963 and see that I did get some really good white folks working for me," Winfrey told an estimated 30,000 people gathered for graduation ceremonies at Howard University, one of the nation's most prominent historically black universities. Winfrey drew repeated big cheers from the moment she took the stage on the university's main quadrangle to address the 2,300 members of the class of 2007 50 years after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at Howard's commencement. "I stand here as a symbol of what is possible when you believe in the dream of your own life," Winfrey said. "Don't be afraid. All you need to do is know who you are." The 53-year-old, whose show has remained the top-rated talk show for 20 consecutive seasons, said her success comes from maintaining her principles and serving others. "My integrity is not for sale, and neither is yours," Winfrey said, recalling times when she was under pressure to change course or avoid topics to help boost television ratings or keep advertisers. "Do not be a slave to any form of selling out." Winfrey recalled how early in her career at a TV station in Baltimore, executives told her she was "too big" and "too black" and "too emotional." She said they tried to have her TV name changed to "Susie" because it would be more familiar, but she refused. Finally Winfrey was put on a talk show, she said, to run out her contract. "And that was the beginning of my story," she added. Winfrey also spoke of what she called a crisis with the nation's black youth. "They don't know what you know. They're falling and they're failing. They're dropping out at rates of 50 percent and higher because we, our generation, didn't teach them who they are," Winfrey said. "We have a responsibility to raise them up, to lift them up, to save them, to liberate them from themselves." Hugh Duckett, 38, of Baltimore, graduated with his wife Diane Duckett. They both earned master's degrees in divinity and are associate ministers in Catonsville, Md. "Oprah's speech was powerful," he said. "She showed us what our vision is and our call to give back to be the men and women that God called us to be." Mothers, fathers, sisters and cousins crowded onto the Howard University campus. Some 18,000 people sat on the quadrangle, while others filled the football stadium and 10 other sites on campus, university spokeswoman J.J. Pryor said. Rhonda Williams traveled from Cleveland to see her 21-year-old daughter Ashley Williams graduate with an accounting degree. She said Winfrey's opening of an academy for girls in South Africa was inspiring for her as a teacher. Winfrey was awarded an honorary doctorate in humanities for her generosity, which Howard President H. Patrick Swygert said "inspires all of us to grow." "You see with a journalistic eye and intellect, but you tell the complete story with your heart," he told her. The new degree drew calls of "Doctor Oprah" from the crowd. When it came time for her to speak, Winfrey echoed African American studies scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., of Harvard University, who also was awarded an honorary degree Saturday. "You can receive a lot of awards in your life. But there is nothing better" she paused to wipe away tears "there is nothing better than to be honored by your own." http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,271921,00.html A Weeping Oprah Feels the Love at Howard U. By Shivonne Foster Black College Wire Others given honorary degrees were Julian M. Earls, retired director of the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, doctor of science; Henry Louis Gates Jr., Alphonse Fletcher professor at Harvard University, doctor of humane letters; Walter E. Massey, outgoing president of Morehouse College, doctor of science; and Irene Sue Pollin, founder of Sister to Sister: Everyone Has A Heart Foundation, Inc., doctor of humanities. http://www.emqtv.com/news/?c=117&a=1167 |

Yep, Oprah is a television and entreprenual (sp) star who 'preaches' a lot so she is up for criticsm. But that woman is an inspiration. Instead of bitching and moaning about all the bad stuff that went on in her life, and using it as an excuse to hold herself back she showed great determination and pushed herself out there. She embraces education and comes across as someone who enjoys life. I do wish she didn't make those comments about 'kids in america' when she opened that south african school. Those were dumb comments, children will be affected differently by their environment. Whatever she is like in private, her public image is of great hope. In my opnion obviously. |

Contrary to rumor, Oprah is not a god. She is human and imperfect but all things considered, she has handled her enormous success well, and she maintains her wide-spread popularity by being expedient. From time to time little things leak out hinting that Oprah's private image is quite different from her public one, that she curses a lot and loves her pomergrante martinis, is really funny and not impressed with certain other celebs. Recently she had to settle out of court with some guy who taped a conversation with one of her ex-employees and was threatening to reveal some incriminating things about "O". Gail has also mentioned that she's has been instructed to immediately burn Oprah's journals if anything happens to her. Hummm. Oprah has said that she was chosen by a higher power to do its bidding, to help and inspire others. I don't know whether you have to be a great intellect to do this, and were she any smarter, she might not be as believable when it comes to feigning humbleness. In any case, you cannot deny that she is extraordinary and whether by luck or divinity she is a force to be reckoned with. And so it goes. |

I read differently about the extortion case. The charges were dropped, but as part of his plea, the man has to either go to work or attend school regularly, complete community service, submit to drug testing and pay restitution for cost of the investigation by the FBI. |

LOL. Well, the case was settled "out of court" and Oprah is powerful enough to have her own spin put on the incident. Whatever appeared on the man's taped phone conversation with Oprahs' ex-employee, whether accurate or not, had to be something "O" didn't want made public. |

Cynique wrote: Well, the case was settled "out of court" Yes but SHE didn't have to settled out of court, as you stated -- two aren't the same, no matter the spin of one's personal opinion. Cynique wrote: Whatever appeared on the man's taped phone conversation with Oprahs' ex-employee, whether accurate or not, had to be something "O" didn't want made public. Maybe, but then how did the man would know if the ex-employee actually told him the truth, or even if the man actually had anything worth wanting not be made public. Or if there any real tapes at all. I am sure all of us wouldn't want anyone trying to extort money, for any information, they claim to have on us, whether it's true or not. If he was so sure, the information he had was in fact, the truth, he should have written a tell-all book, and let the chips fall where they may. |

Why does she have to be dumb because she insulted some white folks? Their insulting us doesn't raise any questions about their intelligence. I'd say that's even a testament to her, she can insult them without getting lynched, and they're still going to kiss her ass tomorrow. Tell me any other black person who can do that. |

Ass-kissers can be bought but money can not buy loyalty. Common sense would tell you that you don't insult the people whose loyalty you would like to retain. And if you've ever experienced your own set of ass-kissers, hangers-on, users and leeches, they're really not very pleasant to have around

What's loyalty or ass-kissing got to do with it? What makes her dumb for insulting her WHITE employees? When white employers insult black people, they may be called all types of things, but their intelligence isn't questioned because of it. |

I read the article again. "The hope of her grandmother, a servant in 1950s Mississippi, was that the young Oprah Winfrey would "get some good white folks" to work for, the star talk-show host recalled Saturday. "I regret that she didn't live past 1963 and see that I did get some really good white folks working for me." This is the closest she comes to saying something that MIGHT offend white people. And if her white employees are offended by that comment, they NEED to move on to another job real soon where they can really get insulted. |

Yes, the guy who tried to blackmail Oprah was dumb, JMHO. But I guess he preferred to use black mail to bluff her with rather than risk writing a book and being sued for libel. Do I remember reading that the court records for this case were sealed. Is this the usual procedure? |

Have you found anyone dumb enough to tolerate your ass yet? Oprah hasn't spent anytime with you so far......I think that would qualify as a testament to her high intelligence. Now go back to getting scurrd the white folks may hear you say something (gasp!) they don't like. |

This actually brings up another question for me: Why is it that some black people are so afraid of saying something that may offend white people, but have no problem at all offending black people? That has always pissed me off. Think about it...what makes them so special that Oprah has to step around saying "good white people work for her"? |

Again, Renata, you're too dumb to comprehend that you don't insult your own people, regardless of their race. It has nothing to do with being "scurrd" it has to do with common human decency. Oprah could have made her speech without belittling the white people who are on her staff ("good white folks" is an insult just like someone calling you a "good negro" is an insult), and all the white people who have supported her thru the years, because if it wasn't for white people, her ass would be nowhere. Dumbdumb.

You're so stupid you think that by pointing out how far she's come as a black woman, she's insulting white people. Maybe white friends/staff YOU would have would be insulted to know you've surpassed them, but then they'd be friends/staff of YOURS...so they couldn't be too bright to begin with. Any TRUE supporters of hers would see the context she's using and know exactly what she means. DUMB BYTCH, STOP PISSING YOUR PANTS HOPING YOU DON'T OFFEND WHITE FOLKS AND THEY MIGHT START TO RESPECT YOUR 'GOOD NEGRO' ASS. |

The hope of her grandmother, a servant in 1950s Mississippi, was that the young Oprah Winfrey would "get some good white folks" to work for, the star talk-show host recalled Saturday. "I regret that she didn't live past 1963 and see that I did get some really good white folks working for me," If any "supporter" of hers is really offended by that, they're no supporter of hers at all. And if they (or MZURI) can't see the context of her using her grandmother's words to show the irony between that and her current situation, maybe they should re-visit sixth grade reading, language, and comprehension. You didn't see anyone else bytching about it, because other folks PAID ATTENTION in class and GET IT. It ain't that hard, really. Even someone dumb enough to marry you can understand it. Ask any of your previous deadbeats. They'll explain it to you. |
