LOL @ ABM! No offense taken. Look, when all the NAACP broohaha broke I looked into some of these "old guard" orgs. Many have slick websites. Many have a lot of "events" (e.g., black-tie types affairs). Many host symposia and give/receive grants for this and that. But my sense is that most of their true usefulness comes at the local branch levels. I just hope that this money is put to good use, though, because this is truly a pressing need. BTW, anyone been following how the development of the "$100 laptop" is coming? |

Yvettep, Please don't take offense. But WTF does the Urban League ACTUALLY do for Black foks? Does ANYBODY know (Yes. The Urban League is a not for profit service organization. In my town it helps people find jobs, runs a food bank, a head start program, helps people pay utility bills, stop mortgage foreclosures, get lead paint out of their houses, weatherize them for the winter. It gives out fans and airconditioners to the needy in the summer. It counsels people about AIDS. It encourages the arts by giving artists places to exhibit their paintings, read their writings, sell their books. It provides room and facilities for the Federation of Block Units. It holds health screenings. It gives away clothing year round, school supplies before school starts and toys at Christmas. It works with the 100 Neediest program to get appliances, furniture and other things to needy families at Christmas. It has social affairs such as a celebrity Golf Tournament and the Ebony Fashion Fair. They give out scholarships to kids, as well as provide part time imployment for high school kids and the handicapped and others. They have a Young Professionals organizations so that young black professionals can network. Now, I suppose if you don't need none of that stuff, they ain't doing anything. You may as well criticize Catholic charities for the same thing. They are a secular organization that provides much the same thing for mostly (but not all) black folks. Now you are going to say "We need to concentrate on trying to seek economic empowerment for upwardly mobile blah blah blah What you need is a bank or some sort of self help organization for middle and upper class Negroes. Lots of luck. They are all trying to join white country clubs. |

Sounds great, Chris. Like I said, most of the truly good works likely come through local chapters and through the efforts of local workers and volunteers. |
