happy living in the U.S? It depends if you are african American, African, or West Indian....as an immigrant with greater opportunities, one would have a different perspective than a 'native' black person of the U.S. I wonder if the majority of black people are cosmopolitan enough to give you a reasonable answer. I am content with my life. but the questions is loaded, aint it? One, I suspect, would have to interrogate their relationship to this country, both a 'black person' and a citizen. Looking at it that way....no, I am not happy! |

Yukio I meant it as a simple question. I admit it is a loaded one by it's very nature, though that was not my intent. Sure if someone says they are "happy", someone else can come along as say, "how can you be happy with millions dying of aids and genocide, in Africa, the failure of our public school for our youth, and..." they could then get up on their sanctimonious, high horse and chastise you for expressing some satisfaction with your own predicament. So in this context, and your own unique perspective, are you happy? |

For me, happiness can be measured in minutes. So everytime I read or see or hear about what is happening in the impoverished, plague-ridden countries or am made aware of how others do not enjoy all of the amenities that Americans take for granted, I experience fleeting moments of happiness. Would I rather live elsewhere? No. The world is in terrible shape but America is the best of the worst. |

Life is what you make it and most of the Black folks I've been around make their lives as pleasant as possible. Most seem happy to me. We get happy over cornbread and collard greens, don't we. I am EXTREMELY happy, have always been this way. If I get any happier I think that I will pop

It depends upon when you catch them. I think on the whole, black people tend to be more resigned although they gripe all the time. Somebody attending an all black social function would be hard put to say that they are gloomy. Sometimes I am happy. I got some news a few minutes ago that made me laugh with joy. I was griping about my breakfast a while before that. I was real pissed early this morning when I heard a guy working for a neighbor making a bunch of noise at 3 or 4 this morning. When the sun came up I saw he was doing some yard work (why? He was gone by then) and felt a little better that he had been up to something useful. I guess I would say that most of the time I am happy, but I have learned the trick to being happy, which is when I don't feel good, I get busy or look for something to be happy about. This morning I was reflecting on some friends of mine. One has lost everything--wealth, wife, family, business, home and his mind. Another two lost health and careers. I had to think about my situation and say I got reasonable health and mind and at least I got that. That can make you happy. Functioning body functions. Sitting there watching all them people in Kansas who lost everything in the tornado. Happiness. A chimera. The Kingdom of Heaven is within. If you want to be happy you make yourself happy. So I can be happy. Even when I'm pissed I can be happy. Sometimes awful things happening to people I don't like makes me happy. sometimes it makes me sad. I have to think, that everything black people have been through and go through now, if they didn't have the capacity to be happy they would have killed themselves by now. |

Would I rather live elsewhere? No. The world is in terrible shape but America is the best of the worst. (If I could be the Sultan of Brunei, or the ruler of Dubai, I would rather live there. If you were rich living anywhere would be fine. I suppose if you are a downtrodden shmo this is the best place to be-- But who wants to be a downtrodden shmo? |

Yes, I would think most are...we have learned, and managed to make the best of everything, find joy in the smallest of things...like a good meal, music, a good book, family, friends. We may not have all that we want, but surely all of us at some point experience happiness. I'm happy living in America. And i can't think of anyplace else i would want to live. |

Content is about it. I'm happy with my life, family, home, material things, etc. I get deliriously happy when my husband and I watch our baby dance or sing or giggle. But then I think of angels, death, acceptance, souls, God, a past that was not lived by me but remembered nonetheless, etc., etc., etc., and I get a knot in my stomach and feel queasy. Intangible feelings, intangible beings, etc., kind of knocks the wind out of me when I'm trying to figure out where it all fits in in my life. Happy with the tangible. |

For most Black people alive today, to not be happy is a slap in the face to our anestors. For most Black people alive today, to not still be mad as hell and not still be working for change is also a slap in the face to our ancestors. Me: I'm very, very happy, still mad and energized for change, and grateful forever for the sacrifices of those who came before me. |

Thanks Yvette ! I am not happy because of a lot of reasons. Biggest one is that Im still not working, though I am trying to find work and have prospects, still dont have a place to live though I see light at the end of the tunnel on that as well but I must also be honest and say these are self inflicted issues. I am also not happy about the way we as a people deal with each other. And finally, I am not happy about how our black children are being treated by the school system, the courts and in some cases children's services. LiLi |
