I was riding down the street on my bike (bicycle) for the first time in quite a while; some sh-t went down in my personal life and I needed to clear my head. I noticed this huge sign which read: Save our kids + Hip Hop Ban 50 Cent. I could not help but be surprised that people believe, to the extent that they would spend money on a billboard, that banning 50 would save our Hip Hop and our kids too. Wow. For the 11 hundredth time, 50 Cent, is only reflecting his experiences and sensibilities in his music. I though about 50 oft-quoted line (paraphrasing) into havin sex i aint into makin love... I thought about how he brags about not caring about women; treating them like sex objects. I turned by bike around and rode three block here is what I saw: With the best bosom money can buy and butt protruding ever so provocatively… Presumably the bill board is to promote The Wendy Williams experience radio program. I could not take my eye off her cleavage. Banner on the old Blumstein’s store. This is where I saw my first Black Stanta Claus almost 40 years ago. My yonnger sister claimed, “Santa Claus is not Black!” Baby Phat banner I quess it is a bra Enyce “ah very nice” tiddies about to slip out the top, legs slightly spread apart, red pumps.. what is she doing with her hand?! “Yeah Baby!” Akademiks, this honey does not even have a top on – but she has her purse. Right above a very nice Commerce bank branch. It was not that long ago that there were not Bank Branches in Harlem – just check cashing places with 2 inch thick glass. These are the images that are served to a 50 Cent and the rest of our black men – since birth. These are the images that are served to our women.

Actually picking on Fiddy is not that "easy". He like so many of his other [c]rapper counterparts are backed by very large corps: Viacom, MTV, VH1, MCA, RCA etc. Getting ppl to listen is the hard part. These little Jewish/White "wiggers" CEO are getting very rich by "pimping" bros like him out. Especially, seeing as how they are selling these images to the White, Middle-Upper class. And they are not going to let go of this music without a "fight".

And for the millionth time Troy he is not a "reflection" of his experiances but an "exploitation" of the experiances of the millions of Blacks who are suffering in this country and worldwide. |

You can't even spell a simple word like experience. 50 cents is certainly a reflection of his experiences. Whether he exploited his experiences or not is beside the point. |

And what 50 cents raps about is not an example of "world wide" black suffering. Puleeze. He raps about a culture that is exclusive to the thug life in America. |

The Ban 50 Cent movement stems from G-Unit people beating up the son of TheGame's manager. It started a couple of months ago and it's not about his music being objectionable at all - although that may have been an add-on complaint. If Fiddy's music should ever be banned, it's not like he's gonna miss any meals. He probably doesn't even give a care and he is NOT going to modify his music. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/53/M80Q.html Looking at those neat pix of the neighborhood, one thing's for sure - there's aplenty of Black people in today's outdoor advertisements

Serenasailor, "reflection" of his experiances AND an "exploitation" of those same experiences are not mutually exclusive. I agree that 50's negative life experiences are being exploited by the record execs -- absolutely. The distinction I'm trying to make clear is that we need to work to eliminate and reduce the impact of the conditions 50 reflects in his music. That way record execs would not have, "the thug culture", Cynique describes, to exploit. I added the photos of the giant billboards to illustrate the how, like a sledge hammer, images which help to objectify women in the minds of Black mem are so prevalent in our community. Mzuri, thanks for clarifying the reason for the Ban 50 Billboard -- that would have never occured to me. If that is the real reason for the billboard it will have no impact other than raising Fiddy's profile. I'n not so sure about "Black people in today's outdoor advertisements"; Wendy Williams is the most obvious Black woman and she has a head full of long billowy Blonde hair and the others I'm not so sure about... |

WHAT A HYPOCRITE YOU ARE CHE-NA-NA!! You claim to be a HUGE "fan" of what Bill Cosby preached. However, you stand up and defend "scoundrels" like 50 cent and these other [c]rappers who promote a lifestyle that Bill Cosby fiercely condemned in his speech(rant). |

I am a huge fan of the truth! I agreed with a lot of what Cosby said because it was true. And if you weren't so dense so you could discern that I wasn't defending Fiddy cents. I was pointing out what is true about his rapping. Your response to this is just an example of how flawed your thinking processes are, SOS. |

Outstanding!! I'm happy to see this. Perhaps more Negroes will abandon their cowardly "I don't see nuthin' wrong wit it" mindset and adopt similar stances against these self degrading human rodents who have denigrated and wrecked havoc on American blacks. I'd like to see more efforts like this by black communities. Bravo Zulu those who created the billboard.

Well NTFS you should know that there has been a movement for years in the Black community against this type of degredation. However, it has received little media coverage. I'm continuing to say that the only reason why they are taking an "interest" in it now is because one of their "cohorts"(Don Imus) went Don Imus. But after the Imus scandel "cools down" things will get back to normal. And more 50 cents, Snoop Doggs, and Dr. Dre's will continue to be "cranked" out of the large manufacturing plants(record companies). And the Bytch, Ho lyrics will continue. |

Serenasailor, Ntfs_encryption lets image a world where record companies were bastions of high moral standards and that they simply refused to produce this music in the interest of the public good. Do you think gangsta rap would never hit the streets? Do you think major white record companies invented invented gangsta rap or rap period? The sole reason this stuff is being "cranked out" is because this is what WE and a now broader community buys. I doubt this stuff would sell anymore if there was zero moral outrage. This moral outrage has no impact, because it has no impact on sales. In fact, it may bolster sales as rebellious teenagers can buck authority by listening to it -- often in public and as loud as possible People argue that rap sales are declining as a result of increased consciousness. The industry, as is it is measured, is declining as a whole. More significant factors seem to be things like iTunes, rather than billboard and other forms of protest. Street sales don't seem to be effected (based on my limited observations). On a different angle NTFS, I don't think I would describe the "I don't see nuthin' wrong wit it" mentality as cowardly. I think it just speaks to the person's state of mind, culture. Some people don't see any thing wrong with 14 year olds having sex, marrying your cousin, two men having sex or taking another's life, having an abortion; and some people do. The question is: What type of society do you want to live in; one where your moral sensibilities are imposed on others or tolerated by others. In such a heterogeneous society were black people define themselves by their religion, sexual orientation, country of birth, shade of completion, financial resources, political affiniliation, Greek letter organization membership, gang affiliation, etc; we already know everyone well not be happy -- but if most of us are I think we are succeeding.

All this music fits this country very well. It is a very apt soundtrack. We live in a country that should be a paradise, yet, spiritually and mentally it is a violent paranoid, mysoginistic racist hellhole. And this is just the beginning. |

Nope. No way out. None. Not even blaming The Man is gonna work for this one, and, frankly, I think that's what's fucking some brothas up...they've gotten so used to being able to shift the blame someway, some how. But you cannot call Black women "ho's" and "bitches" in our culture and slut them around globally. Because Blacks are still very socially conservative, they don't approve of such. And so the problem that you have is with Black folks, not whites, and you're not coming up with an excuse that Blacks will eventually be forced to accept. Why? You can't make them feel bad for this. Who's blaming good hard working socially conservative Black folks for this? Therefore there's nowhere to shift the blame. And Black folks don't care what made you do it--it's unpardonable. |
