Just a quick note to thank those who took the time to respond to the "Where is NTFS" thread posted Tuesday, March 20, 2007. I just got back to SoCal Monday from Ohio. As I stated in the first thread, my mom suffered a serious stroke. Thank God I came back when I did because she was lucid and very talkative when I initially arrived and visited her in the hospital. But unfortunately, a few days later, she suffered an extended stroke. This time, it took her speech and some of her cognitive ability to recognize things. It’s a very unsettling and helpless feeling to see your own mother taken down like this. But to be honest, none of this is exactly new to me. Strokes took down my grandmother and my auntie. Now my mother. The three most important women in my life. As an adult, I have only cried four times in my life. The passing of my grandmother, my auntie and a very dear woman who befriended me and treated me like her own son when I first came to the West Coast as a youngster. Now my mother. I could not suppress the tidal wave of emotion after seeing my mom like this. I have to return to Ohio in a few weeks. I'm not very excited about doing so but I must. I have no choice. This is my mother. I have no idea how this is going to play itself out but it is like a horrible dream you desperately wish you could wake up from. Anyway, I’m starting to ramble with no direction or purpose. I guess I'll start posting again. I did miss the banter, brawls and the exchanges. But I would like to say thanks again to those who did respond in that thread with kind and supportive words. You cannot predict these things and you never know when it may involve a loved one in your family, a friend or even yourself. The aftermath of a serious stroke can be devastating. And to those who don’t think it can happen to you, don’t fool yourself. It can. Trust me.

NT - I'm so sorry about your mom. You didn't elaborate about what was wrong before, you just said she was ill. Strokes are awful and they can strike at any time, regardless of age, but miracles can happen so don't give up hope. And P.S. I missed you!

NTFS, You are absolutely right about a stroke being able to strike anyone regardless of age. They are discussing this on the Today show this morning. God bless you and your mom! I don't know where you are in ohio, but I'm here too so let me know if you would like to communicate off the board... |

Ntfs, thank you for updating us. Probably like many here, I was beginning to wonder and worry again about how things were going. It certainly sounds like you have been blessed with the love and wisdom of some very important elders. These women will continue to live in you and everyone who you touch. Sounds corny--but I believe it is true. I second everyone else's hopes for your mother's recovery and peace, as well as continued strength for you. |

NTFS: I went through this from 2001 through 2002, and it was something that I would not wish on my worst enemy. There are no words I can say to make this easy--just try to hold in your mind that you have to hold it together because she and the rest of your family need you. If you want to talk about it backchannel, beam me <belsidus2000@yahoo.com.>

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your comments and well wishes. I'm sure many of you have had similar experiences with family members or someone you know. As I stated before, the aftermath of a stoke can be bone crushing. Some people recover, others make minor recovery while some never do. I guess it can be liken to cancer. Some survive and some don't.

Thanks again. It means a lot to know that there are so many people who can empathize with unfortunate situations especially when it concerns ones mother. You have only one mother and nothing can ease the pain of seeing her suffer from poor health.
