I absolutely LOVE Alanis Morrissette!! However, I'm with you, I'm not exactly sure where she's going with this. But if I had to guess, knowing what I know from her earlier style/music, she's refusing to let these assholes define her or her womanhood. |

Well, months ago I heard the original and I just thought "WHO WROTE THIS SHYT? SHAKESPEARE THEY AIN'T!" I think the piano on this version sounds beautiful, but the rest of it is just hilarious! I love poetic writing, and I just couldn't stomach those lyrics.....she can't be faulted for that....but THAT VIDEO? |

yes...it is meant to be funny and critical of....maybe christina aguilera [sp] britney spears, and, though not explicitly, the majority of hip hop songstresses.... |

Alainis is making a statement about how the music industry has gone to the dogs. They want slick boy bands, gangsta rap, half-naked jailbait wagging their asses...with little to no singing or musical talent. The focus is on a marketable "look." The music industry has become all about glitz, glamour, sex, and shock value. Lyrics no longer have substance. These are the people who are winning Grammies, American Music Awards, Soul Train Awards, and other musical accolades. Their songs are constant Number 1 hits and comprise most of which makes up Billboard Top Twenty. While those who are making serious, quality music are overlooked by the industry, the bigwigs at their record labels don't promote them properly, and their records don't sell. This is old news. There was a big write-up about this in Rolling Stone a few months back. The irony is, The Black-eye Peas AGREE with Alainis about how the industry sucks, so they gave her license to parody their song to make her point. Dare I mention the same thing is happening in the book industry? If you want to read a good parody about bad writing, and how some so-called publishing houses have become nothing more than author mills that accept everything and anything submitted to them just to turn a quick buck, check out Atlanta Nights by Travis Tea. Say "Travis Tea" fast. This manuscript was actually offered a publishing contract. The "Travis Tea" authors, in good conscience, rejected the contract. They made their point. They then went on to self-publish the "sting" manuscript through Lulu. The book is hilarious! It's the best (deliberately) bad writing you'll ever read. |

Apparently some people don't recognize a spoof when they see one. Move over, Al Yankovich. Somebody's stealing your stuff. And look out for America's Idol's favorite mediocre singer Sanjya to get an album deal. |

No, Yukio, I've not read Erasure. Guess I'll have to add that title to my list. Sorry, but there's no website. You have to understand that this all happens behind closed doors - until the contract is offered. Then the authors, (and I plead the 5th as to whether or not I'm one of them), who pulled the hoax come forward with proof of the publishing contract, expose the offending publisher, and, hopefully, cause the publishing house to clean-up their act and stop making the book industry look bad. The way it works is a group of authors (again, I plead the 5th) who know and trust each other get together on the DL. They toss around a concept for a book. Each is assigned a chapter to write - the worst the writing is, the better - not knowing or seeing what the other authors are writing. Once everyone has written their chapter, they submit it to the "ring leader," who then puts it all together - no editing or changes whatsoever - and submits it under a pseudonym to a "publisher" with questionable business practices. Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, and it usually is, the writers then publicly expose the "publisher" for what it really is. Another "sting" manuscript written to expose an unscrupulous "publisher" and was offered a contract by said publisher is Crack of Death by Sharla Tann. Again, say "Sharla Tann" fast. The writers behind these "sting" manuscripts are not looking to cause trouble. Quite the opposite. They do it to protect up-and-coming writers from author mills, phoney agents and editors who prey on the naivete of new writers, make the book world aware of these lowlife "publishers," "agents" and "editors," and get rid of the bad apples in the publishing industry. Lots of time, effort, investigation, research, and planning - on the hush - go into these "sting" manuscripts by author advocates and book industry watchdogs. No one is paid for this. They do it to maintain some level of integrity in the book world. Here's something from Atlanta Nights for your amusement: "I’m sorry, Callie," Yvonne sighed sorrowfully. "I wish I could help you but I have my own green pastures to think about. Roberto and I--what we have been a beautiful thing. A truly beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing, and I can’t risk losing such a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing." Callie eyes narrowed, so imperceptibly that no one even noticed. "Even for a friend?" she warned. "You’re a beautiful friend," Yvonne sighed. "But what Roberto and I share are more beautifully beautiful than our commonly beautiful friendship." Callie rubbed her suddenly throbbing head with her fingertips in slow, two-and-three-quarter inch circles. "Fine," she half-spat, one-quarter shrieked, one-quarter shouted, and she snatched her coat from the couch. She flung open the door and stormed outside, her bosom heaving with rage, stopping only long enough to smash a twinkling Christmas light with the heel of her shoe.

LMAO. Talk about hack writing! And there seems to be an epidemic afoot. Everybody has the writing bug. Writing a book is the one endeavor which inhibits nobody because nothing is required to pursue this ambition except pencil and paper or a type-writer or a computer's word processor. Lack of talent and writing skills does not deter anyone who has made up their mind that the world is waiting to read what they write, and self-publishing has become the enabler of those hooked on this idea. Guess is just human nature to want to express yourself and make money in the process. And so it goes. |

Thx Jmho. Sometimes I'm slow on the pickup. I thought what Yukio was asking whether or not the writers behind the "sting" had a website where they detail their mission, reveal their true identities and all. Some of the "Travis Tea" writers have revealed themselves; others wish to remain anonymous. But yes, there is a mock "Travis Tea" website, as you've indicated. Remember, "Travis Tea" is not a real person nor is "Travis Tea" one person/writer, rather a group of writers. Some of the "Travis Tea" writers are also the "Sharla Tann" writers. All info on the "Travis Tea" official website regarding the author "Travis Tea" is a gag. Read "Travis Tea's" bio on "his" official website. Fun stuff. |

......"what we have been a beautiful thing. A truly beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing, and I can’t risk losing such a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing." OMG. If it was published like that, the publisher didn't even PRETEND to take a look at it. ..."she half-spat, one-quarter shrieked, one-quarter shouted." Then she half ran, one eighth stumbled, three eighths danced, two eighths.........LOL |

Urban_scribe: I thought what Yukio was asking whether or not the writers behind the "sting" had a website where they detail their mission, reveal their true identities and all. There are sites, interviews, and articles which detail the writers' mission and their identities, one of which is wikipedia, as Yukio noted. But even the site states their mission: Travis Tea is the pseudonym for a group of (mostly) science fiction and fantasy authors who were amused by PublishAmerica's claim (at their authorsmarket.net site) that science fiction and fantasy authors are "writers who erroneously believe that SciFi, because it is set in a distant future, does not require believable storylines, or that Fantasy, because it is set in conditions that have never existed, does not need believable every-day characters." So a group of science fiction writers (inept practitioners of an undemanding art, if PublishAmerica were to be believed) set out to see what kind of "quality" PublishAmerica required — how believable the characters needed to be and how believable the storyline had to be. PublishAmerica said they were "picky"? People who'd read PublishAmerica books suspected that the fine folks in Frederick didn't edit their titles (despite their claim to do so "line-by-line") and perhaps didn't even read their submissions before offering a contract. |

Her "remake", so to speak, is totally backhanded, but that is classic Alanis -- and I loved it! Though the BEPs aren't totally horrible, that song sucked -- and Fergie sucks!!!! When the lyrics aren't hyped by a catchy beat, it's amazing to really listen to the lyrics. It's a disgusting song --if it can even be called that. I'm glad Alanis had the courage to do this. I applaud her!
