According to the WhoIs database, the AALBC site was first registered on 02-Mar-1998. I'm not sure if Troy had the bookclub going before he created the site, maybe we can find out. Thumper's Corner was first registered in November of 2002 - but the oldest discussion board posts that I've ever seen were from 2003 so perhaps the forum software wasn't added until in 2003, or else people didn't start posting for a few months. Maybe an old timer such as Cynique would have some insight into all of that. And I must say that I'm a fantabulous unofficial Thumper's historian

Well then it's confirmed and it's been ten years. Where's the party at? Troy should have made enough money off of this book club venture to fly us all up to the NYC on private Lear jets, board us at The Pierre and feed us all some champagne and caviars. Or some chitlins or something. What's up???

"...which I haven't been around since my post office days" LOL Thanks everyone! I tend recognize three points as the start of AALBC.com. As a result, you will see different start dates depending on where you look. Oct. 1997 As best as I can recall, this is when I first started working on AALBC.com. AALBC.com started as a part of a web site I'd built to promote another business I had; "Johnson PC Consultants". The first url of AALBC.com was http://johnsonpcc.com/books and online record of this site may be found here: http://web.archive.org/web/19980111031218/http://johnsonpcc.com/ Dec. 1997 This was the day I sold my first book online. I'm really disappointed that I do not recall the title of that book now. I'm sure I did not take notice, because I had no clue what AALBC.com would become. AALBC.com started as an exercise for me to learn how to make money on the internet so that I could impart that information to my clients for whom I built web sites. March 1998At this point I'd completely abandoned Johnson PC Consultants in favor of AALBC.com. It only took a few months to determine I had much more of a passion for AALBC.com than any job I ever had. Even after almost 10 years I really love what I do. Of course I'm busier than ever -- which is one of the reasons I did not pick up this thread right away. I just popped by to post a notice about an interesting event Network With Top Agents & Editors April 13 & 14 http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/1/25424.html Whenever I come through TC I check the posted made in the last day. This morning I stumbled across this conversation. <b<thumper's> anniversary is a little more complicated. Shortly after AALBC.com was registered I added a discussion board; so the discussion boards have been around since 1998. I do not recall the month, but it was not very long after AALBC.com domain was registered. It was also around that time that Thumper presented himself. The board began to be come even more popular. Thumper was one of the most prolific and popular posters. I decided to christen that discussion aboard Thumper’s Corner. Eventually we formed and on-line book club called The Coffee Will Make You Black online reading group. We hosted monthly on-line chat sessions with authors and more. I decided to spin off the book club and associated discussion board on to a new site called CWMYB.com. This was the new home of Thumpers corner discussion boards and our Coffee Will make You Black book club. I guess a couple of years went by, and I began having technical difficulties with my web host. They simply could not support the web site. The discussion board were constantly failing and I was losing some really good posts. I decided to stop paying them and they decided to keep my domain name. I abandoned the CWMYB url and migrated all of my web sites to a new host. CWMYB was transferred to thumpercorner.com (TC) where it has resided ever since. Like everything else the TC has charged over the years. The online book club is now inactive, but the discussion boards are more active than ever before. Even I lurk more than I post. Often, the boards inform my off-line conversations and exposes me to points of views I would never have considered previously. Even my pop culture quotient has been raised a level and I can now come across a somewhat “with it” when speaking to my teenage daughters. Lately, I’ve considered pulling thumperscorner.com back into AALBC.com, but this is more for administrative reasons than anything else and is a low priority so it may not happen anytime soon. Thanks again everyone, lurker and post for your support over the last decade. Mzuri, I hope you are taking notes. ;-) |

Good Morning Troy!!! All of that history is so interesting and of course I'm taking notes. Now, when are you sending the Lear jets??? Please be advised that when you book our rooms at The Pierre, I prefer to overlook Central Park. Breakfast should be brought promptly at 7:00 a.m. and I'll have two $15 eggs with a side of pork meat and a $7.50 piece of toast. Freshly squeezed O.J. will be most delightful. And I prefer my caviars on ice. P.S. This internet e-commerce thing is just so amazing, isn't it???

Hope that my memory meshes with Toy's chronology. After stumbling onto and inital posting Carey asked what I nowo perceive as screening questions. When trepidation was expressed about posting, Thumper assured me that the posters did not know each other and to jus jump in. Mentioned that I was age 70 and Thumper congratulated me, am now approaching 82. Thumper (HNIC) & Carey (Gatekeeper)ran a tight ship back in the day. I have learned a lot from this site and thought I had landed in heaven when I found it. But time, posters, content & dynamics have changed, I have become jaded & less than enthusiatic about AA writers (especially the quality of work) or the new words that I learned from other posters and added to my vocabulary. I am a lurker not a poster and now limit my reading, for the most part, to Cynique (remember when you logged on as Critique)postings/responses that I find encompasses the content of issues presented, therefore ifind it unneccessary to read others. Cynique have you considered compling and publishing your posting? It is/would be such a waste for your cognitive and writing skills to be lost to the vastness of cyber space. |

Nice input Sese, wish you would grace us more often. Madam Cynique doesn't seem to realize what a precious jewel she truly is. She consistently enlightens us all with her wonderful pearls of wisdom as if it was second nature, but unfortunately some seem to take her presence here for granted. She really could compile her posts into a book and it would surely be a best seller

Hi Sese! How ya been doing? Yes! I remember when I changed my name from Critique to Cynique and how Thumper and I used to joust! I appreciate your kind words even if you are prejudiced since you and I are both senior citizens and are coming from same place. I know a lot of my posts are "off the wall" but there are some things that age didn't siphon out of me. I still tend to fight fire with fire even if I have to get down and dirty to do it. No, I never thought about coupling my posts and trying to get them published but maybe I will in the future. A forum like this is tailor-made for my style of writing which tends to be terse and cogent, something that served me well when I wrote a newspaper column years ago. It helps that my life-long endeavor has been to know a little bit about a lot of things, and having always been an avid reader immersed in the world around me, my memory has become my google seach engine and a lot of what I write is off the top of my head drawn from things I have experienced or read about. Making this clear is something I feel is necesssary since I have been accused of cutting and pasting info from the internet and passing it off as my own. But I can count on one hand when I have done this. Whatever. Thanks again, my dear, SeSe. Godspeed to you! |

Yukio, I'll defintely take you up on your offer for drinks. There is defintely a book, perhaps several, in these posts. It never occurred to me that it might work if someone complied their own posts into a book. Mzuri what would be the name of Cynique's book? The book idea I had would break the book up into different topics. Each topic would include posts or conversations on each topic. One day I'll just pay someone to do it. Sese I miss Thumper and some of the older posters too. That is why I appreciate, even more, the ones who are post great stuff today. Whether there is a book on Cynique's posts or not I do not intend to allow the posts to disappear. In fact the companies like Google are copying the entire world wide web on a regular basis: visit http://web.archive.org/web/20021207130408/www.thumperscorner.com/cgi/discus/disc us.cgi for an example of a copy of TC baord from 5 years ago. I also have a local copy and a copy stored in the on-line arhcives available here. My web host has a backup as well. I believe the historical data on the WWW will persist as long there is a civilization. I believe future generations will be able to reference what we are writing, online, today and learn a great deal about people where thinking today. I just hope they will be able to sort the crap from the truth. We have a tough time doing that today, image 200 years from now....

Cynique---Like you (pre t.v generation)I have been a life long reader but my brain is not wired like your, therefore our cognitive processes and personallity differ. Aftr umpteen years of living, reading and various experiences that would inform forming and expressing an opinion, I ain't got it, but evidenced by your post, you got it. You have a very special and rare talent. Think you would break new ground publishing your postings. With Yukio doing the intro, his academic background he should have good ideas about formating & sectioning the contentto facalite marketing. Mzuri has a name for your book & could handle marketing, and please give ChrisH something to do. After you put these people to work, like Oprah you can sit back and let the money roll in. I'm really flattered and appreciative that some of you think my posts could be assembled and compiled into a book, but I'm really more in favor of what Troy and Yukio suggested; a collection of the "Best of Thumper's Corner" because the archives of this board are a virtual treasure trove of stimulating discussions and humorous exchanges that include input from the whole board. The problem with me turning my musings into a book is that nobody away from the board knows who the heck "Cynique" is. But it was a nice thought, anyway. LOL. Thank you! |

Everyone will know "MADAM CYNIQUE" We can pimp the book thru AALBC and plus we can embellish your experiences to stimulate the interest of the international press. Let me think. Hmmmmmm. Of course, we can have a four part series, LiLi...hey now...are all of you from the midwest? You, ABM, and Cynique...and we have an expatriated African, and now we need a Southerner and someone from the West Coast, and a West Indian raised in the U.S.....Troy and I are from Harlem....we need all of this of course, so that it is truly....African American and covers all part of our nation, African America...we can have short pieces by the other folk, but the majority of the narrative or book can be structured around the four of you--kola, LiLi, ABM, and Cynique. |
