Nelson Mandela Boycotts Bicentennial Former South African President Nelson Mandela Sunday boycotted plans to commemorate the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade in Bristol, England. Mandela turned down the invitation by the city's mayor to take part in Sunday's events after learning that the former British slave port is still beset with accusations of racism and intolerance, The Independent reported Sunday. Local black organizations told Mandela, who helped lead South Africa out of apartheid, that his presence would be seen as supporting a predominantly white city council that has been accused of insensitivity to the city's black population, the report said. "We pointed out to Mr. Mandela that Bristol is not quite the liberal, multi-racial place it pretends to be," said Hilary Banks of the Consortium of Black Groups. "We said that if you do come to Bristol, we'd like your visit to change the position of the black people in the city. We did not tell him not to come; that was obviously his own decision." © 2007 UPI http://www.playfuls.com/news_10_20886-Nelson-Mandela-Boycotts-Bicentennial.html |

...the news that Nelson Mandela decided to take this stand, that is. Not the horrible things that's been going on over there, of course.

The above story is poorly written and it lacks substance. How is Nelson Mandela declining an invitation seen as a "boycott?" Has Mandela made any public statement declaring his stance? Without his comment there is no way to know why he turned down the invitation and at this point, it's just a one-sided story based on an interview with a member of a local British group, nothing more.

Greetings, Tonya! Actually, I'm more impressed by the blacks at the local level, that is in Bristol. Their fortitude shows that they are keen about national and international politics. Fortunately, they were savvy enough to convince NM not be used as a political ploy for the aggrandizement of whites in Bristol who are clearly using this event to illustrate their liberalism. This, I think, is a good example of how blacks across the world can work together! And it is also an example, of how, black folk with international acclaim can be used to, indirectly, legitimize the exploitation of blacks at the local level. |

Mzuri: How is Nelson Mandela declining an invitation seen as a "boycott?" Topic sentence: Former South African President Nelson Mandela Sunday boycotted plans to commemorate the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade in Bristol, England. Without his comment there is no way to know why he turned down the invitation and at this point, it's just a one-sided story based on an interview with a member of a local British group, nothing more. Second sentence: Mandela turned down the invitation by the city's mayor to take part in Sunday's events after learning that the former British slave port is still beset with accusations of racism and intolerance, The Independent reported Sunday. What can one do? I guess we should discard all newspaper reports because they do not obtain quotes from the people on which the report is based.

Mzuri: I have checked via the internet, and it seems that the same story was post several times on several different news-sites. This, of course, doesn't prove that Mandela is truly boycotting the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade. I tried! |

That's correct Yukio. News stories should be verified and without comment from Nelson Mandela or his spokesperson, there is no way to know why he didn't attend this function. Mandela may not want to travel or perhaps he had scheduling conflicts. The fact remains that the above article is poorly written and your rebuttal doesn't change that.

Well, there was no rebuttal, in fact. I cut and pasted what was already in the article that you claimed was 'poorly written.' Perhaps, just perhaps, you misread the article. You asked: "How is Nelson Mandela declining an invitation seen as a "boycott?" But the first sentence--the topic sentence which explains the point of the paragraph or in this case a very short article-stated that Mandela was boycotting--declining to attend--plans to commemorate the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade in Bristol, England. What is indeed unclear, is if The Independent's only source was Hilary Banks [aint she from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air?]. |

It's neither an article nor a story, imo. It's an announcement printed on a (foreign?) news site. ...This a critic should know (Shrugs). Yeah Yukio, The Independent's lone source is some female named Hilary Banks. I'm sure we'll hear more about it tomorrow. Good night. (Sleep tight ) |

I didn't say it wasn't legit, Disenchanted, I said it was poorly written. I think it would be great if you would learn to read and comprehend. Even better if you could achieve those two tasks simultaneously.
