Viewpoints, Outlook March 23, 2007, 9:15PM Blacks from Africa as America's true model minority? By CLARENCE PAGE DO African immigrants make the smartest Americans? The question may sound outlandish, but if you were judging by statistics alone, you could find plenty of evidence to back it up. In a side-by-side comparison of 2000 census data by sociologist John R. Logan at the Mumford Center, State University of New York at Albany, black immigrants from Africa average the highest educational attainment of any population group in the country, including whites and Asians. For example, 43.8 percent of African immigrants had achieved a college degree, compared to 42.5 of Asian-Americans, 28.9 percent for immigrants from Europe, Russia and Canada, and 23.1 percent of the U.S. population as a whole. That defies the usual stereotypes of Asian-Americans as the only "model minority." Yet the traditional American narrative has rendered the high academic achievements of black immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean invisible, as if it were a taboo topic. Instead, we should take a closer look. That was my reaction in 2004 after black Harvard law professor Lani Guinier and Henry Louis Gates Jr., chairman of Harvard's African-American studies department, stirred a black Harvard alumni reunion with questions about precisely where the university's new black students were coming from. About 8 percent, or 530, of Harvard's undergraduates were black, they said, but somewhere between one-half and two-thirds of black undergraduates were "West Indian and African immigrants or their children, or to a lesser extent, children of biracial couples." If we take a closer look, I said at the time, I bet we'll find that Harvard's not alone. With all of the ink and airwaves that have been devoted to immigration these days, black immigrants remain remarkably invisible. Yet their success has long followed the patterns of other high-achieving immigrants. As one immigrant Jamaican friend once told me, "I'm too busy working two jobs to worry about the white man's racism." Now comes a new study that finds a consistent pattern of Ivy League and other elite colleges and universities boosting their black student populations by enrolling large numbers of immigrants from Africa, the West Indies and Latin America. Immigrants, who make up 13 percent of the nation's college-age black population, account for more than a quarter of black students at Ivy League and other elite universities, according to the study of 28 selective colleges and universities. The authors of the study, published recently in the American Journal of Education, included Douglas S. Massey of Princeton University and Camille Z. Charles of the University of Pennsylvania. The proportion of immigrants was higher at private institutions, 28.8 percent, than at the public ones, where they comprised 23.1 percent of enrollment. Are elite schools padding their racial diversity numbers with black immigrants who do not have a history of American slavery in their families? This development immediately calls into question whether affirmative action admission policies are fulfilling their original intent. But as Walter Benn Michaels, a professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago, writes in his book The Trouble With Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality, the original intent of affirmative action morphed back in the 1970s from reparations for slavery into the promotion of a broader virtue: "diversity." Since then, it no longer seems to matter how many of your college's black students had slavery in their families. It only matters that they are black. That said, I don't begrudge black immigrants or any other high-achieving immigrants their impressive achievements. I applaud them. I encourage more native-born American children, particularly my own child, to take similar advantage of this country's hard-won opportunities. But I also think we need to revisit the meaning of "diversity." Unlike our current system of feel-good game-playing, we need to focus on the deeper question of how education can be improved and opportunities opened up to those who were left behind by the civil rights revolution. We tend to look too often at every aspect of diversity except economic class. Yet, the dream of upward mobility is an essential part of how we Americans like to think of ourselves. It's also why a lot more people are trying to get into this country than trying to get out. Page is a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist specializing in urban issues. well that settles it. the africans are the hardest working, most industrious, savvy group of immigrants to EVER walk the american continent. we should all look to them as a glowing example of what all "minorities" should strive to emulate. not only are the african the hardest working and smartest immigrant group, they are also the most physically attractive. have a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Exactly what tide is he swimming against? A Scholarly article written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist?? How is the total nonsense that LIL_Z wrote going against what was written in that article? If anything it’s against the rules that Troy JUST LAID DOWN when he said he wanted to clean this board up. It might be acceptable to you but I recall many including Troy expressing utter disdain for such. |

why is that post offensive? lil_zero is being sarcastic, yes, but nothing about that image warrants censor. the african queen he's referenced is lovely, exhibiting TRUE culture that self-hating, color struck, snot-nosed 'hommies' like lil_zero lack. |

What is offensive about it is not the photo of the African, but the implication that we should view Africans, and therefore ourselves, as ugly. So perhaps what is truly offensive is Lil_ze's display of self-hatred on a site that advocates black literacy, self-knowledge, and self-respect. |

if that is what one implies from an image of an african woman, then perhaps a self-assessment is in order. the post's true intention only has merit if the viewer deems the african as 'ugly.' is troy censoring posts based on a poster's intentions or a post's face/shock value? If it's based on a poster's intentions, indeed troy has a difficult task before him. the photo should stay, there's nothing at all wrong with the image. due to his self-hate and subsequent short-sightedness, lil_zero has unknowingly foiled his own feeble attempt at inciting discomfort in the minds of many self-knowing, self-respecting readers of this site, i'm sure. |

The article doesn't directly state that African immigrants are more educated than Asian immigrants. I can certainly believe that we are more educated than Asian-Americans but I wonder if the former is true. In general I believe African immigrants have done well, education wise, because this is a result of the self-selection that is a natural part of immigration. People who immigrate are basically people who are willing to risk everything to succeed in a strange place. They have a drive that those who stay at home often lack. Those black Americans who have relocated to places like Japan, Ghana, and France are also highly educated in comparison to the native-born population. As far as Lil_ze is concerned, free speech is a beautiful thing. It's been my experience that most black Americans share Lil_ze's viewpoint so his presence, in a way, provides the balance that exists in the real world. It's important to remember that people like him exist because this site too, is skewed by a demographic of relatively highly educated people who might prefer to think that Fela Kuti or Toni Morrison have more of an impact than Lil' Kim and Flavor Flav. Lil_ze reminds me of sad truths that need to be remembered. |

I think Asian immigrants have African immigrants beat in the "model minority" category. While African immigrants tend to be well-educated, any success they have is PERSONAL achievement. Whereas Asian immigrants, AS A GROUP, not only tend to be well-educated, but are accumulating wealth, thereby strenghtening their community's status. Some African immigrants may have acquired personal financial comfort, but not in a group sense; not in a manner that strenthens the African immigrant community as Asians have and continue to do. Africans and other immigrants, and even native-born Americans, would do well to follow the Asians' lead by opening more restaurants, more produce markets, more convenience stores, more electronic superstores, more salons, and other commodities that the general public needs/wants, in order to mirror that wealth in their particular communities. The thing to remember here is that in America money talks - EVERYTHING ELSE walks. Money, which, mind you, is the dominant reason most immigrants relocate to the States in the first place. Many believe that having a solid education is the foundation of accumulating wealth, rather than earning a solid education for knowledge's sake. It's no secret that "The American Dream" is truly measured by the amount of zeros and commas in one's financial portfolio. |

Tonya wants to know what tide Lil-Z is swimming against. Considering how pissed off she got, I'd say he was swimming against the stream of her pee. And what clues we are provided with. Only if she was using western standards would Tonya have been offended by the pictures posted. Me, I like a little comic relief from these ponderous subjects. And what would some folks do without the ol reliable self-hate label to pin on anybody who doesn't identity with and love what they are not. Lil-Z is not from the Ubangi tribe. Having said that, I will now proceed to give Urban-Scribe's post 5 stars |

Renata: several yrs. ago, it would have been Indian doctors. People come here, quite driven and often skilled, and sometimes already credentialized . . .while I have not done any study of African immigration, I have heard many anecdotes from Africans, mainly W. Africa but also East, that many of their brethren are affluent; interestingly, i am seen those same persons sell commodities on the streets of NYC and Philadelphia; in other words, though they better pedigree than the majority of us...they aint too proud to sell in the informal economy... But compare that to the poor Haitians selling the same things, but are not doing as well... WHY? the first migration wave is the skilled and better education, the second and third migrations are the poorer folk..... |

Tonya. I enjoy reading most of the threads that you start but your shit is NOT sacred. And just because you find something offensive does NOT mean that it offends everyone else. You need to get a grip and take a chill pill because the shit is not that serious. If something that someone posted here has your panties in a bunch that hard, you need to take a vacation from this forum. If you really believe that what Z posted is against some policy (a real policy not some BS you dreamt up in your mind) and not just because you feel that it merits removal because it offended your sensibilities, then send Troy a note like the friggen 30-something adult that you are, instead of posting some childish crybaby drivel about how you're taking "votes" thru the star system. Because I don't recall Troy making any policy prohibiting the freedom of expression here at Thumper's. And if you really want to know, I find your immature conduct offensive. If you can't handle the commentary about the subjects that you start, then don't start them. Take my advice and grow up.

And as for the SPECIFIC group of Asians, it's usually Japanese, Koreans and Chinese....rather than Laotians, Cambodians or Filipinos, or even a lot of Cantonese-speaking Chinese. Also, their not being African-American means they are less likely to be discriminated against by banks when they ask for a loan to open up a business; this also holds true for African immigrants. |

The issue here is Lil Z's "offensive" comment on this thread and not the cumulative effect of all of his rants - that would be a separate issue. This is NOT the ban Z for expressing his opinions that some might find offensive thread. If you're part of the self-anointed boardie patrol, then I suggest that you direct your complaints about Z's "out right numerous derogatory comments about Africans, on how they're subhuman, inferior, stinking dogs, the dark race, ugly, monkeys etc." to a moderator.

No, Cynnique. this is what I’m saying. First Muzuri explodes onto our thread and goes ballistic, using all kinds of rude hostile expletives simply because she didn’t find the article on that thread to her liking. And then you, Cynnique, came right behind her and backed up all of her outlandish behavior and lewd vulgarism: http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/179/25139.html?1174846499#POST9337 9 Now LIL-ZE explodes onto this thread with the same boorish behavior, posting pictures that I found offensive due to the sentiments behind them, all because NOW HE doesn't like THE ARTICLE; and again, Cynnique, you come right behind him, backing his loutishness as well. Why are you ENCOURAGING this behavior WHEN YOU KNOW TROY SAID HE WANTED IT TO STOP? And why can’t we get through a thread without the disruptive behavior, which does nothing to address the topics in a manner that most people here including Troy find beneficial or useful, when Troy clearly stated that he does not like it? You ought to stop encouraging the nonsense, is what I'm saying. |

What you call a "vulgar lout", I call a "chain-yanker", Tonya. Everybody is not in sync with your sentimentalities, nor are they obligated to be so. As far as I'm concerned there was nothing obscene about what Lil-Z posted. There was no profanity and no nudity. Lil-Z is a fixture on this board, - a "charcter" from whom we know what to expect. Yukio - I already answered you once. Grasp the concept. I'm not administering any more than you are. Tonya - You need to get your facts straight. What's ballistic and vulgar about my saying that people are discriminated against for other reasons besides being Black? And what "rude hostile expletives" did I use in that thread? Please specify. Further, I'll thank you not to put words in my mouth. As to Cynique goading anyone's behavior, I can promise you that I don't need any encouragement in expressing my thoughts and opinions and I doubt if anyone else does either. Even if she does encourage anything, what's the difference between her cheering someone on and you inviting the negative behavior of the Trollop Queen or SenileSailor, neither of whom contribute anything positive to this forum??? And once again, Tonya, just because you find the mundane redundant topics that you post here earth-shatteringly informative, that doesn't mean that anyone else thinks they are the be all that ends all. Your problem is that you expect things to be predictable. You want to post your tired articles and you expect everyone to read them and perceive them and interpret them in the exact same manner as you. You seem to expect everyone to be in agreement with your sentiments, not realizing that different people have had different experiences and they aren't all going to see shit your way. You seem unwilling to make allowances for the dynamics that occur when separate and distinct individuals express various opinions about diverse issues. You need to switch it up, you're getting stale.

Mzuri is consistent. She didn't start out as one thing and then turn into another, like you and "enchanted" did, "brownbooty". You chameleons can say annnnnnything you want about Mzuri and me, but we are who we are, unlike you waffling ditzes who think everybody has a short memory. |

I'll make you a deal Booty - you post your home address, with home telephone number and telefax number here on this forum, and I'll post my web address. Because that's exactly the information that would be revealed by me posting my website. No, the information is NOT on my website. It can be found thru the registrar, the whois information that's available for all domain names.

I have no reason to believe that Mzuri is lying, brownbooty. What she says is not that outlandish especially since she doesn't overwhelm us with details of her lifestyle in Texas. She just happens to mention it in passing. Also she exhibits the intelligence to be in the position she says she in. Of course you are too superficial to discern this. |

Exactly Cynique. Ever since I've posted here, I've said that I sell at eBay, which I do. Furniture, which is what I sell. And that I took an early retirement from federal government so that I could work my business at my leisure. If I was any of these fukctarded bitches, I'd attempt to get on Mzuri's good side and trying to get the hook-up, instead of hurling their infantile rants. As if stupid Booty can sleep in everyday and spend her time however she chooses. As if I'm deriving any benefit from posting lies about myself, my business or my income - I'm anonymous remember? It's no wonder people think that Black folks are stupid, some of you all really are. LOLOL! How the fukc do you think I can sit on my ass at my computer all day and post to this forum - because there's a BOSS breathing down my neck??? Let me tell you about me, if I can glean some money making information from a successful Black person (or anyone for that matter) I'm johnny-on-the-spot about it. But not clueless Booty, that's for sure.

Disenchanted - I simply asked you to substantiate your allegations that I claimed I could pass for white. Since no such statement was made by me, no such post can be found. Thank you for confirming that you are simply pulling brainfarted statements out of your ass. As to me being Z, it's really gotten old and I'm tired of addressing it. You can't prove that either. Since you feel that we're not worth you making a quality post, why don't you get lost. It's not like anyone here is going to miss you, so let me be the first to invite you to leave.

Mzuri, once you tell people what they NEED to do rather than whether you agree or disagree them, you are, indeed, playing the role of manager, administer, adjudicator...LOL! When I asked you the question the first time, you hadn't cursed; thereafter, however, and since you have been cussin up a storm...LOL! In regards to how methods of engagement, I do not, like you, tell folk what they NEED to do. I know thats your way, but on this particular thread you have taken an authoritative position. Since you have answered my other questions, would you characterize your own behavior as 'immature,' 'offensive,' both? |

Since you seem to suddenly have so much trouble typing and expressing yourself, "enchanted", why don't you just e-mail your posts to Nafishy Gomez so she can edit them and then cut and paste them on the board for you. Doing that should be no problem at all for you. And it certainly shouldn't be a problem for her since that seems to be her sole function in life. |

Yukio, Where do you live to see African immigrants not running our own businesses? Is there a large West African community there? I live in New York and there are many restuarants, shops, etc. in all five bourroughs. I always assumed it was the same way everyplace. I can rent a West African movie, buy a Congolese cd, or pick up "rice with sauce" whenever I like. We also have several weekly newspapers and nightclubs. I think the West African community here is very tight. |

Dahomeyahosi: I didn't say that Africans did not run their own businesses. I did say that, from my experience, some educated Africans aren't against selling products in the streets. In other words, some African Americans believe their too good to sell commodities in the streets, though I doubt that, or should I say wonder, if an affluent African, known and respected in the community, would sell products in his own village or town just to make extra monies. Mzuri: I would say that I am having fun w/your belligerent behavior towards posters, as well as identifying, for my own pleasure again, how you behavior parallels that of those you criticize.

interesting. i post a photo of a "beautiful" african, and some people are calling for the "offensive" post to be deleted? what is offensive about posting a picture of a "beautiful" african? and why are some people SO bothered by a photo? the fact that they are SO bothered by a PHOTO, really says that they are the ones who are disturbed by "beautiful" africans like the one in the photo i posted. and what about my post was "against" ANY forum or board rules? NOTHING. as far as "jackie" saying that i called africans "monkeys" or "subhuman", that is a LIE. i have NEVER once on this board called an african a "monkey" or said they were "subhuman". i dare ANYONE on this board to site where i said this. its amazing. a bunch of self-appointed board monitors are bothered by a PHOTO, and they are calling for people's posts to be deleted. did the person who started this board, say that its against "board rules" to post photos of the inhabitantes of the african continent? if the creator of this board makes a rule that says "THERE SHALL BE NO PHOTOS POSTED OF THE INHABITANTES OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENT", i shall follow that rule. but until then, who the HELL is some other poster to call for another posters post to be deleted? again, why some posters are SO disturbed by a PHOTO of a "beautiful" african, is beyond me. "OHH, OHH, LIL ZE IS POSTING OFFENSIVE PICTURES AGAIN"!!!!!!!!!!! "CONTACT TROY, SO HE CAN DELETE THIS POST AT ONCE"!!!!!!!!!!!! have a wonderful day!!!!!!! |

It has nothing to do with that. See you guys live in a very "narrow" world. Here in California I've seen some of the darkest most African featured women with non-Black men. See mixed Assholes like Eastwest wants all Black ppl to look like him. That is why he is constantly putting down Blacks/Black women. He relishes the hatred that some(not all) Black men have for Black women and themselves. A woman can get any man no matter what she looks like as long as she is smart, sophisticated, and has a "good head on her shoulders". And that goes for any race!! |

If she can pull a rich white man looking like that and I seen a lot ugly sisters can get a man who aint black its the pretty black ones always single." i've said the same thing before on here...i've seen some of the ugliest black women dating interracially yet people assume that black women dont date interracially because we CAN'T....no its because most black women choose not to.. but eastwest i find it interesting that you would use the fact that alot of african women date interracially as a way to say that african women can be attractive too...as if it takes white men (or any man for that matter) to validate black women's beauty.....its not like they have the God-given advantage of being able to discern beauty. it just goes to show alot of black men (and other men of color) wouldnt be falling all over blondes the way they do if white men wouldnt parade them around as the best thing since sliced bread. i know alot of black women who say that they get way more attention from black men once its known that they are either in a relationship with a white man or have dated white men before in the past. so many men are truely stupid and cant seem to think for themselves...they need a leader to think for them. if the big dog in the pack finds a woman attractive then everyone wants her...however if he deems her unattractive none of the other men will notice her. |

Serenasailor: "A woman can get any man no matter what she looks like as long as she is smart, sophisticated, and has a "good head on her shoulders". And that goes for any race!!" So then the natural inference from what you're saying if a woman has NO man, it's likely she must NOT be smart, sophisticated, and has a "good head on her shoulders". Is THAT what you'd assert? |

Misty since you are not a Native born AFRICAN I Really do Not Find Anything of Value in what you have to say. One of the thing's I admired about the Cute South African women I've dated was how Different they are mentally and Education wise from American black females. This POST WAS ABOUT AFRICANS. My comment was directed towards African Women Not AMERICAN BLACK FEMALES. IF THERE ARE ANY NATIVE BORN AFRICAN WOMEN ON THIS BOARD WHO FIND MY COMMENT OFFENSIVE THEN I WILL APOLOGIZE. BUT IF YOU ARE A TYPICAL American black FEMALE Then I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU. The POST WAS NOT ABOUT YOU. SO MOVE ON |
